RAIL.ONE - the way to go We develop innovative track systems, to help you get ahead fast and safely. And what are your plans? Ecologically oriented and cost-effective Track systems are frequently designed from a purely technical point of view, and too often represent a foreign body in the urban landscape. Development of the RAIL.ONE Green Track, however, makes possible a much more pleasant appearance by improved integration of tracks into the urban landscape. Additional vegetated surfaces beautify the entire urban landscape, and allow use of the track area as a design element. At the same time, the municipal environmental balance benefits from this type of track system: the Green Track improves air, soil, and groundwater conditions. The structured surface of the green space, and the advanced elastic rail fastening common to modern tracks, result in more favourable airborne-sound emission and structure-borne noise in comparison to conventional track models within the city. In the final analysis, everyone gains from the benefits of green tracks: city residents, passengers, and the transit authorities. RAIL.ONE offers a selection of various ballastless track systems as green-track solutions: ATD-G, as a system directly supported on asphalt supporting layers RHEDA CITY GREEN, as a monolithic system on a concrete base. Both models are presented on the following pages.
ATD-G and RHEDA CITY GREEN
ATD-G the Green Track ATD-G is derived from the ATD system already proved successful in high-speed traffic applications for railways. ATD-G structural track design The track system ATD-G (which stands for Asphalt supporting layer for Track Direct support, Green) is a ballastless track system in which a cross sleeper track panel, consisting of concrete biblock sleepers and the connected rails, is directly installed onto an asphalt supporting layer with exact height tolerance. The modular principle used here enables effective derivation of solutions for the individual requirements of public transport authorities. The basis for this work is a uniform system structure for all elements of the track route: e.g., straight and curved through-track sections, curved track with cant, train stations, turnouts, transitions to other rail profiles, and crossings for pedestrians and vehicles. The most important ATD-G characteristics: Continuous track stability and long life cycle Simple and transparent structure of the system Flexible layout possibilities Favourable installation by mechanized processes Short construction periods, with resulting short interruption of rail traffic Minimum interference with private motorized transport during installation Easy cleaning Modular adaptation to various road construction types High resistance to corrosion caused by parasitic current.

ATD-G: SYSTEM OVERVIEW Low, high, or mixed ATD-G can be easily adapted to the specific demands of the individual traffic authorities. Since the basic structural design is always identical, the differing solutions result from modular adaptation for various types of vegetation. Track bed with low vegetation coverage, to the top edge of the sleepers The intentional objective of this track system is to preserve the technical character of the facilities, but at the same time to enhance the townscape. Even after vegetation growth, the rail fastenings remain visible. Excessive growth of vegetation on the tracks is prevented by means of the plates fitted between the sleepers. Track constructions with mixed vegetation cover are also possible. Track bed with high vegetation coverage, up to the rail head The aim of this solution is optimum integration into the environs so that the rails are barely visible. Chamber elements, made of plastic or rubber, directly mounted onto the sleepers, prevent the vegetation from growing up to the rails. In this way, airborne sound from the tracks is considerably reduced. By addition of solid material (e.g., drainage concrete for additional bonding of the sleepers onto the asphalt base layer), it is also possible to make the tracks passable for road vehicles in case of emergencies.
ATD-G: SYSTEM OVERVIEW Basic track Sub-grade prepared for asphalt cover Placing the sleepers on the completed asphalt supporting layer Completed supporting asphalt (three layers), with height exactness of ±2 mm, and with integrated lateralforce base support Installed and properly aligned track panels ATD-G and RHEDA CITY GREEN
ATD-G: SYSTEM OVERVIEW The BERLIN model Green-track chamber elements for the spaces between the rail head and rail flange, with ballast filling for vegetation Graded track before planting vegetation Completed track with turf The DRESDEN model Filling of the aligned track panels with a mineral drainage mixture, to enable access by emergency vehicles Green-track chamber elements for the spaces between the rail head and rail flange; with geotextile cover layer Placing of rolled turf on a plastic honeycomb structure, to enable vehicle support The ATD-G Green Track in operation
ATD-G: SYSTEM OVERVIEW Special solutions Advanced urban-traffic systems promote mobility and set desired accents. Track systems must harmoniously integrate into the urban architectural landscape - and satisfy a great variety of requirements for functional and representational purposes. The possible solutions are just as individual as the cities in which they are implemented. Customized solutions ATD-G offers further proven solutions that go beyond straight and curved through-track sections. These flexible options offer project planning and design engineers a complete portfolio of track elements that allow comprehensive green-track planning e.g., for the following: The areas around train and tram stations Rail crossings for pedestrians and vehicles Rail transitions to ballasted track sections, or to other ballastless track systems Turnouts with an especially designed ATD-G solution, and with concrete sleepers Track curves with small radii ATD-G track systems with grooved rails and transition to track panel ATD-G track system at the transition zone from vignol to grooved rail profiles Urban station executed with the ATD-G system Turnout on concrete sleepers with the ATD-G system ATD-G and RHEDA CITY GREEN
ATD-G: SYSTEM OVERVIEW Reference projects Each project is just as individual as the contracting customer s company itself. The special circumstances at the construction site, and the customer s special requirements, are equally essential. Owing to its flexible system structure, the ATD-G Green Track system has been successfully implemented in numerous cities. Berlin Public Transport Authority (BVG) Beginning as early as 1995, the Berlin Public Transport Authority (BVG) constructed a two-track pilot section. This project realized a model featuring tracks installed flush, at sleeper height, with the street surface, and planted with sedum. The outstanding results obtained at this location prompted the BVG in Berlin to stipulate that the ATD-G model would be the standard form of implementation in its network, and that it would be realized in future projects. After these successful trials, the BVG had executed over 16,000 metres of ATD-G Green Track on several projects. In the meantime, the Berlin Public Transport Authority has, in several development stages, raised the vegetation of the track system to the level of the rail head. Hanover Public Transport Authority (üstra) As part of the infrastructure measures for the EXPO 2000 World s Fair in Hanover, the municipal public transport authority executed approx. 8,000 metres of the suburban passenger line to the EXPO site as ATD-G. The vegetation used on the Green Track was in the form of sedum mats and seed-planted turf, both up to sleeper height. Concrete slabs installed in the spaces between the sleepers prevent the vegetation from covering the rails. Now, after more than seven years of operation with heavy usage of the track facilities the position and the height of the rails remain stable. Cologne Public Transport Authority (KVB AG) In late April of 2003, the Green Track was put into operation on the tram line running down the Cologne street Markgrafenstrasse. The system implemented for the 2,000-metre tram line was the ATD-G, with sedum planted up to sleeper height. As a result of more stringent requirements placed to prevent vibration and airborne noise, the E 14 Vossloh Fastening System was used on this project. Dresden Public Transport Authority (DVB AG) In 1996 the Dresden Public Transport Authority installed an attractive turf track in two construction phases, with a total length of 1,400 metres. The turf was installed in the form of rolled sod, with grass up to the level of the rail head. Special elements that fill the space between the rail head and rail flange provide insulation and prevent the turf from growing up to the rail. Both of these measures reduce the airborne noise emission to low levels. In order to allow rescue vehicles to use part of the section of the track, the track panel was filled with a mixture of mineral material used for drainage, and plastic honeycomb material was installed in the turf area. Now, after eleven years of operation, the track is still in outstanding condition, and satisfies the client s stringent expectations for track-position stability, noise-emission reduction, and vegetation.
12 13 ATD-G and RHEDA CITY GREEN
RHEDA CITY GREEN the appealing alternative RHEDA CITY GREEN is the green-track alternative of the RHEDA CITY model the system with long years of proven operation in urban transit. Modern ecology plus advanced technology For the RHEDA CITY GREEN model, modified biblock sleepers with lattice girders are concreted into a compact concrete slab. A cover with turf or sedum provides an attractive optical impression. This system combines the functional and safety advantages of absolutely stable track position with the cost-efficiency benefits of practically no maintenance. In Germany, projects with the Green Track have already been executed in a number of cities: Cologne, Düsseldorf, Karlsruhe, Mannheim, and Berlin. This ballastless track system has also been implemented in The Hague, Netherlands. Ecologically beneficial Compared to other forms of track, the combination of vegetation and rail systems offers an optically attractive variation. Vegetation of track surfaces dampens the noise level and minimizes maintenance costs. Track with turf in fact reduses noise at its very source. The Green Track also allows cost-effective solutions in cases of especially strict requirements placed on vibration protection and on the propagation of structure borne noise.
