1 SECTION UNIT MASONRY SYSTEM PART 1 GENERAL 1.01 SECTION INCLUDES A. Concrete masonry and face brick units. B. Reinforcement, anchorage, and accessories SUBMITTALS A. Submit product data under provisions of Section B. Submit product data for masonry units. C. Submit samples under provisions of Section D. Submit four samples of face brick units to match existing in color, texture and extremes of color range. E. Submit manufacturer s certificate under provisions of Section that products meet or exceed specified requirements. F. Submit manufacturer s installation instructions under provisions of Section QUALIFICATIONS A. Installer: Company specializing in performing the work of this Section with minimum five years documented experience MOCK-UP A. Provide mock-up of masonry under provisions of Section B. Erect face brick to 3 x 4 feet panel size, include specified mortar and accessories. C. When accepted by the Architect & the City of McKinney, mock-up will demonstrate minimum standard for the Work. Mock-up may not remain as part of the Work PRE-INSTALLATION CONFERENCE A. Convene one week prior to commencing work of this Section DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Deliver products to site under provisions of Section B. Store and protect products under provisions of Section Unit Masonry System 1

2 1.08 ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS A. Maintain materials and surrounding air temperature to minimum 50 degrees F (10 degrees C) prior to, during, and 48 hours after completion of masonry work SEQUENCING AND SCHEDULING A. Coordinate work under provisions of Division 1. B. Coordinate the masonry work with installation of window anchors and adjacent dissimilar materials. PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.01 MANUFACTURERS - BRICK UNITS A. Product: Acme Brick Co., Western King Size, must 3 vertically & 10 horizontally. Color as selected by Architect/Owner. Brick No. 1 to be Acme, BL 2, Velour Garnet. Brick No. 2 to be Acme BL-33, Heritage Napa Valley, velour. Brick No. 3 to be Acme Blend 31 Ridgemar in smooth finish. ALL face brick must course 3 vertically and 10 horizontally. The Architect, Owner and City of McKinney are ALL required to approve brick sample colors prior to initiating Work. Submit samples in triplicate to the Architect. Course brick in true running bond pattern where header joints overlap brick in adjacent courses by 1/2 the brick length. B. Substitutions: Under provisions of Section PRE CAST CONCRETE COPING A. Equal to Better Cast Stone, 2347 South 2 nd Ave., Mansfield, TX 76063, in profiles as shown on drawings. Utilize color No. 2 and submit for approval REINFORCEMENT AND ANCHORAGE A. Joint Reinforcement: Truss type; hot dip galvanized after fabrication cold-drawn steel conforming to ANSI/ASTM A82, No. 9 W 1.7 side rods with No. 9 W 1.7 cross ties; manufactured by Dur-O-Wall or equal. B. Brick Ties: Hohmann & Barnard, Inc. HB ga., pintle length as required or equal veneer anchoring system, hot dipped galvanized finish. C. Joint Stabilization Anchors: D/A 2200, Dur-O-Wall or equal. D FLASHINGS A. Copper/Kraft Paper Flashings: 2 oz/sq ft sheet copper bonded to fiber reinforced asphalt treated Kraft paper; Cop-A-Bond manufactured by AFCO or equal ACCESSORIES A. Joint Filler: Hohmann & Barnard, Inc, NS closed cell neoprene sponge. B. Building Paper: #30 asphalt saturated felt Unit Masonry System 2

3 C. Nailing Strips: Softwood, preservative treated for moisture resistance, dovetail shape, sized to masonry joints. D. Weep Holes: Preformed plastic tubes; Hohmann & Barnard, Inc #342 Rectangular or equal. E. Cleaning Solution: Non-acidic, not harmful to masonry work or adjacent materials, as recommended by masonry unit manufacturer. PART 3 EXECUTION 3.01 EXAMINATION A. Verify that field conditions are acceptable and are ready to receive work. B. Verify items provided by other sections of work are properly sized and located. C. Beginning of installation means installer accepts existing conditions PREPARATION A. Direct and coordinate placement of metal anchors supplied to other Sections. B. Provide temporary bracing during installation of masonry work. Maintain in place until building structure provides permanent bracing COURSING A. Establish lines, levels, and coursing indicated. Protect from displacement. B. Maintain masonry courses to uniform dimension. Form vertical and horizontal joints of uniform thickness. C. Lay concrete masonry units in running bond. Course one unit and one mortar joint to equal 8 inches. Form concave mortar joints. D. Lay brick units in running bond. Course three brick units and three mortar joints to equal 8 inches. Form concave mortar joints PLACING AND BONDING A. Lay solid masonry units in full bed of mortar, with full head joints, uniformly jointed with other work. B. Lay hollow masonry units with face shell bedding on head and bed joints. C. Buttering corners of joints or excessive furrowing of mortar joints are not permitted. D. Remove excess mortar as Work progresses. E. Interlock intersections and external corners. F. Do not shift or tap masonry units after mortar has achieved initial set. Where adjustment must be made, remove mortar and replace Unit Masonry System 3

4 G. Perform jobsite cutting of masonry units with proper tools to provide straight, clean, unchipped edges. Prevent broken masonry unit corners or edges. H. Isolate top joint of masonry partitions from horizontal structural framing members and slabs or decks with compressible joint filler WEEPS AND VENTS A. Install weep holes in veneer at 20 inches on center horizontally above through wall flashing, above shelf angles and at bottom of walls CAVITY BEHIND VENEER A. Do not permit mortar to drop or accumulate into cavity air space or to plug weep holes REINFORCEMENT AND ANCHORAGES A. Install horizontal joint reinforcement 18 inches oc. B. Place masonry joint reinforcement in first horizontal joints above and below openings. Extend minimum 16 inches each side of opening. C. Place joint reinforcement continuous in first joint below top of walls. D. Lap joint reinforcement ends minimum 6 inches. Extend minimum 16 inches each side of openings. E. Secure wall ties to concrete tilt up back-up and embed into masonry veneer at maximum 15 inches oc vertically and 16 inches oc horizontally. Place at maximum 3 inches oc each way around perimeter of openings, within 12 inches of openings MASONRY FLASHINGS A. Extend flashings through veneer, turn up minimum 16 inches and seal to sheathing over steel stud framed back-up. B. Lay end joints minimum 6 inches and seal watertight. C. Use flashing manufacturer s recommended adhesive and sealer LINTELS A. Install loose steel lintels over window openings and door openings. B. Maintain minimum 16 inch bearing on each side of opening CONTROL JOINTS A. Do not continue horizontal joint reinforcement through control and expansion joints Unit Masonry System 4

5 B. Form control joint with a sheet building paper bond breaker fitted to one side of the hollow contour end of the block unit. Fill the resultant elliptical core with grout fill. Rake joint at exposed unit faces for placement of backer rod and sealant. Place joints at second floor line vertically and at 24 feet o.c. max horizontally. C. Size control joint in accordance with Section for sealant performance TOLERANCES A. Maximum Variation From Unit to Adjacent Unit: 1/32 inch. B. Maximum Variation From Plane of Wall: 1/4 inch in 10 feet and 1/2 inch in 20 feet or more. C. Maximum Variation From Plumb: 1/4 inch (6 mm) per story non-cumulative; 1/2 inch (13 mm) in two stories or more. D. Maximum Variation From Level Coursing: 1/8 inch in 3 feet (3 mm/m) and 1/4 inch in 10 feet (6 mm/3 m); 1/2 inch in 30 feet (13 mm/9.1 m). E. Maximum Variation of Joint Thickness: 1/8 inch in 3 feet (3 mm/m) CUTTING AND FITTING A. Cut and fit for conduit and sleeves, etc. Coordinate with other Sections of work to provide correct size, shape, and location. B. Obtain Architect/Engineer approval prior to cutting or fitting masonry work not indicated or where appearance or strength of masonry work may be impaired CLEANING A. Clean work under provisions of Section B. Remove excess mortar and mortar smears. C. Replace defective mortar. Match adjacent work. D. Clean soiled surfaces with cleaning solution. E. Use non-metallic tools in cleaning operations PROTECTION OF FINISHED WORK A. Protect finished installation under provisions of Section B. Without damaging completed work, provide protective boards at exposed external corners which may be damaged by construction activities. END OF SECTION Unit Masonry System 5
