1 SECTION ACOUSTICAL PANEL CEILINGS PART 1 - GENERAL 1.01 DESCRIPTION: A. Work under this section is subject to requirements of the Contract Documents including the General Conditions and Supplementary Conditions and applicable portions of Division 1 - General Requirements. B. The work consists of all labor, material and equipment necessary and required to complete all acoustical panel ceilings as shown on the drawings and specified herein RELATED WORK SPECIFIED ELSEWHERE: A. Mechanical Fixtures in Acoustical Panel Ceilings: Division 15. B. Electrical Fixtures in Acoustical Panel Ceilings: Division SUBMITTALS A. Product Data: Manufacturer s product specifications and installation instructions for each acoustical ceiling material required, and for each suspension system, including certified laboratory test reports and other data as required to show compliance with these specifications. 1. Include manufacturer s recommendations for cleaning and refinishing acoustical units, including precautions against materials and methods which may be detrimental to finishes and acoustical performances. B. Samples: Set of 12 inches square samples for each acoustical unit required, showing full range of exposed color and texture to be expected in completed work. 1. Set of 12 inches long samples of each exposed runner and molding. C. Single Source Responsibility: Obtain each type of acoustical ceiling unit and each type of suspension system from a single source with resources to provide products of consistent quality in appearance and physical properties without delaying progress of the work. D. Coordination of Work: Coordinate layout and installation of acoustical ceiling units and suspension system components with other construction that penetrates ceilings or is supported by them, including light fixtures, HVAC equipment, fire suppression systems components, if any, and partition systems, if any JOB CONDITIONS A. Space Enclosure: Do not install interior acoustical ceilings until wet-work in space is completed and nominally dry, and until work above ceilings completed and until ambient conditions of temperature and humidity will be continuously maintained at values near those indicated for final occupancy DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING A. Deliver acoustical ceiling units to project site in original, unopened packages and store them in a fully enclosed space where they will be protected against damage from moisture, direct sunlight, surface contamination and other causes. B. Before installing acoustical ceiling units, permit them to reach room temperature and a stabilized ACOUSTICAL PANEL CEILINGS

2 moisture content. C. Handle acoustical ceiling units carefully to avoid chipping edges or damaging units in any way EXTRA MATERIALS A. Deliver extra materials to Owner. Furnish extra materials described below that match products installed, are packaged with protective covering for storage and are identified with appropriate labels. 1. Acoustical Ceiling Units: Furnish quantity of full sized units equal to 2 percent of amount installed. 2. Exposed Suspension System Components: Furnish quantity of each exposed component equal to 2 percent of amount installed Quality Assurance A. Standards for Performance shall be as indicated except, as more rigid standards are set elsewhere in the specifications. 1. Metal Suspension Systems for Acoustical Tile and Lay-In Panel Ceilings, ASTM C635, latest edition. 2. Installation of Metal Ceiling Suspension Systems for Acoustical Tile and Lay-In Panels, ASTM C636, latest edition. 3. Ceiling and Interior Systems Contractors Assoc. (CISCA) The Ceiling Systems Handbook, and referenced data, latest editions. 4. Clean Rooms as designated by Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) shall conform with F.S. 209D, Class Building Code Requirements: a. State of Illinois NFPA and (IDPH), ASTM 255, Class A Flame spread 0-25, smoke developed b. International Building Code, 2000 (IBC), ASTM E84, Class T, flame spread 0-25, smoke developed Acoustical Panel Finish Surface: F.S. SS-S118B Class A, Type III. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.01 CEILING UNITS A. Acoustical Panels (ACT-1): Shall be 24 inches by 24 inches in size, 3/4 inch thick, mineral fiber panel with beveled tegular edge for installation on a 15/16 inch exposed T suspension system. Panels shall have manufacturer s standard white vinyl latex paint finish. Panels shall be: 1. Armstrong, Ultima Tegular Fine Texture 1951 with beveled tegular edge, or approved equal. B. Acoustical Panels (ACT-2): Shall be 24 inches by 24 inches in size, 3/4 inch thick, nonperforated mineral fiber panel with square cut edge for installation on a 15/16 inch exposed T suspension system. Panels shall have manufacturer s standard white vinyl faced finish. Panels shall be one of the following: 1. Armstrong, Ultima Square Lay-In Fine Texture 1910, or approved equal. Acoustical Panels (ACT-3): Shall be 24 inches by 24 inches in size, 3/4 inch thick, clean room mylar faced non-perforated panels with square edge for installation on a 15/16 inch exposed T suspension system. Panels shall be: 1. Armstrong clean room mylar square Lay-In smooth texture 1715 field unit and 1720 border unit, or approved equal. D. Acoustical Panels (ACT-4): Shall be 24 inches by 24 inches in size, 3/4 inch thick, Woodworks Vector for installation on a 15/16 inch concealed T suspension system. Panels shall be: 1. Armstrong Woodworks Vector Constants Micro- perforated Constants Cherry 6812, or approved equal. E. Acoustical Panels (ACT-5): Shall be 24 inches by 24 inches in size, 1 inch thick, Optima Open Plan for installation on a 15/16 inch exposed T system. Panels shall be: 1. Armstrong Optima open plan tegular square edge fine texture 325, or approved equal CEILING SUSPENSION MATERIALS A. General: Comply with ASTM C 635, as applicable to type of suspension system required for type of ceiling units indicated. Coordinate with other work supported by or penetrating through ceilings, including light fixtures, HVAC equipment, and partition system. B. Attachment Devices: Size for 5 times design load indicated in ASTM C 635, Table 1, Direct Hung. 1. Hanger Wires: Galvanized carbon steel, ASTM A 641, soft temper, pre-stretched, yield-stress load of at least 3 times design load, but not less than 12 gauge (0.106 ). C. Type of System: Either direct-hung or indirect-hung suspension system, at Contractor s option. 1. Carrying Channels: 1-1/2 inches steel channels, hot-rolled or cold-rolled, galvanized, not less than pounds per lineal foot. D. Acceptable Manufacturers: Shall be Armstrong or USG Interiors Inc., or Chicago Metallic Corp. All ceiling suspension systems shall have manufacturer s standard white finish. The following systems are based on Chicago Metallic Corp.: 1. Tempra 4000 System, 9/16 inch face, galvanized steel System, 15/16 inch face, galvanized steel. E. Edge Moldings: Manufacturer s standard straight edge 15/16 inch face, L-molding at all grid/wall intersections. Provide field cut narrow reveal edge at acoustical ceiling panels for 9/16 inch exposed T suspension system. F. Exposed Suspension System: Manufacturer s standard exposed runners, cross-runners and accessories, of types and profiles indicated, with exposed cross runners coped to lay flush with main runners, white baked enamel finish. G. Hold Down Clips for Non-Fire-Resistance Rated Ceilings: For interior ceilings composed of layin panels weighing less than 1 pound per square foot, provide hold down clips spaced 2 feet 0 inches o.c. on all cross-tees MISCELLANEOUS MATERIALS A. Edge Trim Molding: Metal, of types and profiles indicated, finish to match exposed suspension system members. B. Concealed Acoustical Sealant: Non-drying, non-hardening, non-skinning, non-staining, nonbleeding, gunnable sealant complying with requirement specified in Division 7 Section Joint Sealants. 4 PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.01 INSPECTION A. Examine conditions under which acoustical ceiling work is to be performed and notify Contractor in writing of unsatisfactory conditions. Do not proceed with work until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected PREPARATION A. Coordination: Furnish layouts for inserts, clips, or other supports required to be installed by other trades for support of acoustical ceilings. B. Measure each ceiling area and establish layout of acoustical units to balance border widths at opposite edges of each ceiling. Avoid use of less-than-half width units at borders, and comply with reflected ceiling plans wherever possible INSTALLATION A. General: Install materials in accordance with manufacturer s printed instructions, and to comply with governing regulations, fire-resistance rating requirements as indicated, and industry standards applicable to work. B. Install suspension system to comply with ASTM C 636, with hangers supported only from building structural members. Locate hangers near each end and space 4 feet along each carrying channel or direct-hung runner, unless otherwise indicated, leveling to tolerance of 1/8 inch in 12 feet. 1. Secure wire hangers by lopping and wire-tying, either directly to structures or to inserts, eye-screws, or other devices which are secure and appropriate for substrate, and which will not deteriorate or fail with age or elevated temperatures. C. Install edge moldings of type indicated at perimeter of acoustical ceiling area and at locations where necessary to conceal edges of acoustical units. 1. Screw- attach moldings to substrate at intervals not over 16 inches o.c. and not more than 3 inches from ends, leveling with ceiling suspension system to tolerance of 1/8 inch in 12 feet. Miter corners accurately and connect securely. 2. Sealant Bed: Apply continuous ribbon of acoustical sealant, concealed on back of vertical leg before installing moldings. D. Install acoustical panels in coordination with suspension system, with edges concealed by support of suspension member. Scribe and cut panels to fit accurately at borders and at penetrations. 1. Install hold-down clips in areas indicated, and in areas where required by governing regulations or for fire-resistance ratings; space as recommended by panel manufacturer, unless otherwise indicated or required. E. All vinyl faced, non-perforated panels shall be installed with a closed-cell sponge neoprene gasket between flanges of suspension system and panel and No. 414 hold down clips spaced 24 inches o.c. on all cross- tees. All field cut edges shall be sealed to conform with F.S. 209D, Class EXISTING CEILING SYSTEMS A. In rooms being altered and in rooms where present acoustical ceilings shall be extended or altered, use materials to match and by same manufacturer. If same material is not available, submit, for review, samples of available material which most nearly match, in style, quality and appearance ACOUSTICAL PANEL CEILINGS

5 3.05 ADJUST AND CLEAN A. Clean exposes surfaces of acoustical ceilings, including trim, edge moldings, and suspension members; comply with manufacturer s instructions for cleaning and touch-up of minor finish damage. Remove and replace work which cannot be successfully cleaned and repaired to permanently eliminate evidence of damage. END OF SECTION ACOUSTICAL PANEL CEILINGS
