2 BIM, Sustainability & Precincts How Building Information Modelling Standards Can Improve Building Performance APEC Meeting, Medan, June 2013 John Mitchell, Principal, CQR Pty Ltd President, buildingsmart Australasia Introduction John Mitchell, B Arch, Dip Arch Comp Architect long-time interest in computing in design and now modelling of the urban environment Specialised in hospitals Chairman buildingsmart Australasia Member of major Collaborative Research Centre for Low Carbon Living, University of NSW 1
3 Overview BIM - applied to buildings - has proved it can dramatically improve design, documentation, and built product value Precincts - neighbourhoods - are the building blocks of our cities and represent the scale at which urban design needs to make its contribution to city performance Precinct assessment involves the performance dimensions of low carbon, resilience and sustainability - requiring an integration of BIM, GIS and infrastructure VERA - Roadmap for ICT in Construction A Technology Programme of Tekes, the National Technology Agency of Finland, , 43 mill. 7 What is buildingsmart? A neutral, international and unique non for profit organisation supporting open BIM through the life cycle. We have regional chapters in Europe, North America, Australia, Asia and the Middle East. Chapters: Benelux, Canada, China, French Speaking, German Speaking, Iberian Alliance, Italy, Japan, Korea, Middle East, Nordic, United States, Norway, Singapore, and UK & Ireland International User Group Why buildingsmart? We believe that significant improvements in cost, value and carbon performance can be achieved by open share-able asset information in the creation and operation of the built environment worldwide. We believe that open share-able asset information will help the supply chain unlock more efficient and collaborative ways of work throughout the entire project and asset life-cycle end to end. Our Values: Open, neutral and international ISO International User Group 6

Standardisation and modularisation have been key drivers for the project.use of drofus, first time in Australia, for managing FF+E, brief compliance, standardisation, scheduling of finishes and doors, etc. Client, Builder, Engineers and Architects all using drofus through IFC interface so all can view BIM at a macro down to a micro scale, ie from the whole building down to an individual piece of FF+E. see here for more details 9
