Thermal resistance (Rvalue) for the different densities is shown in Table 1. The maximum thickness for boards is 5 inches (102 mm). Boards have a maximum flame-spread rating of 25 and a smokedensity rating of 450 when tested in accordance with UBC Standard 8-1 (ASTM E 84), and comply with ASTM C as Type I, II, VIII and IX boards EIFS Grade (IEG) Board: These boards have a minimum density of 0.90 pcf (14.4 kg/m 3 ) and comply with ASTM C as Type I boards, and are used as a component in exterior insulation and finish systems (EIFS). The boards have more restrictive requirements than EPS boards for conditioning, product dimensions, marking and packaging R-Tech One-Coat Stucco Board: R-Tech One-Coat Stucco Board consists of 1-inch-thick (25.4 mm), nominal 1 pcf density (16 kg/m 3 ), EPS insulation boards with a nominal 1.5-mil (0.38 mm) plastic facer laminated to both sides. The boards are available in several configurations. Sheets 2 feet (610 mm) or 4 feet (1219 mm) wide are available in 8-foot (2438 mm) lengths, with either 1 / 2 -by- 1 / 2 -inch (12.7 by 12.7mm) shiplap joints or tongue-and-groove joints on the long edges; sheets 49 inches (1245 mm) wide are available in 8- to 10-foot (2438 to 3048 mm) lengths, with shiplap joints on the long edges; sheets 48 inches wide (1219 mm) are available in 8- to 10-foot (2438 to 3048 mm) lengths, with square edges. The boards may have nominal 1 / 2 -inch-wideby- 1 / 4 -inch-deep (12.7 by 6.35 mm) channels spaced a maximum of 12 inches (305 mm) on center on the back face of the board under the plastic facer. See Figure 2 for additional details on the board edges R-Tech Gable-Guard: R-Tech Gable-Guard is a nominally 1 / 2 -inch-thick (12.7 mm), 1 pcf (16 kg/m3) density, EPS insulation board with a nominal 1.5-mil (0.38 mm) polymeric facer laminated to both faces. The boards are available in 4-foot (1219 mm) widths and 8-foot (2438 mm), 10-foot (3048 mm) and 12-foot (3658 mm) lengths, and have square edges Poly-Guard 136 Tape: Poly-Guard 136 Polyethylene tape is for use on joints of R-Tech One-Coat Stucco Board when used as a weather-resisitive barrier. The tape is nominally 9.0 mils (0.23 mm) thick and 2 inches (51 mm) wide, and is supplied in 36-yard-long ( mm) rolls. 2.2 Uses: EPS is used as a general, nonstructural, thermal insulation material [i.e., for walls (exterior and cavities), roofs, panels, door cavities, perimeters of foundations and basements (outside or inside)]. The interior of the building must be protected by a thermal barrier as required by Section of the 1997 Uniform Building Code (UBC), Section of the 2000 International Building Code (IBC), or Section R of the 2000 International Residential Code (IRC), as applicable, except as described in Sections and of this report. 2.3 Special Uses: Crawl Spaces: Either insulfoam EPS or R-Tech One- Coat Stucco boards may be used on walls of crawl spaces with no covering applied to the crawl-space side of the foam plastic, provided all of the following conditions are met: 1. Entry to the crawl space is only to service utilities, and heat-producing appliances are not permitted. 2. There are no interconnected basement areas. 3. Air in the crawl space is not circulated to other parts of the building. 4. Under-floor ventilation is provided that complies with Section of the UBC, Section of the IBC or Section R408.1 of the IRC, as applicable. 5. Boards having a maximum nominal density of 1 pcf (16 kg/m 3 ) are permitted to be a maximum of 3 inches (76 mm) thick, and boards having a maximum nominal density of 2 pcf (32 kg/m 3 ) are permitted to be a maximum of 2 inches (51 mm) thick. 2 Page 2 of 9 ER Boards used in crawl spaces are limited to R-Tech Onecoat Stucco Board or EPS manufactured from BASF Corporation Styropor BF and BFL (ER-3401), NOVA Chemical Corporation Dylite M77 (ER-5770), or Huntsman Corporation Grade 54 (ER-5703) beads; and are labeled as shown in Figure Attics: Either EPS, R-Tech One-Coat Stucco Boards or R-Tech Gable-Guard may be used on the walls of attic spaces with no covering applied to the attic side of the foam plastic, provided all of the following conditions are met: 1. There are no interconnected attic areas. 2. Air in the attic is not circulated to other parts of the building. 3. Attic ventilation is provided that complies with Section 1505 of the UBC, Section of the IBC or Section R806 of the IRC; and combustion air complying with Sections 701 and of the 1997 ICBO Uniform Mechanical Code or Sections 701 and of the 2000 International Mechanical Code, is provided as applicable. 4. EPS boards having a maximum nominal density of 1.5 pcf (24 kg/m 3 ) are permitted to be a maximum of 1 inch thick (25.4 mm). 5. R-Tech StuccoBoard, EPS or R-Tech Gable- Guard boards used in attic spaces are limited to those manufactured from NOVA Chemical Corporation Dylite M33 grade beads (ER-5770), and are labeled as shown in Figure Weather-resistive Barrier: General: When installed in accordance with this section, the R-Tech One-Coat Stucco Boards may be used as an alternative to Grade A, B or C building paper specified in UBC Standard 14-1 or ASTM D 226. The boards must be covered with exterior plaster complying with UBC Section 2508, IBC Section 2512, or IRC Section R703.6, or with one of the cementitious exterior wall coatings noted in Section of this report. The 2- and 4-foot-wide (610 and 1219 mm) R-Tech One Coat Stucco Boards with tongue-and-groove joints on the long edges are oriented horizontally, and the tongues must face upward. The 2- and 4-foot-wide (610 and 1219 mm) boards with shiplap joints, and the 48- and 49-inch-wide (1219 mm and 1245 mm) boards with square edges, are oriented vertically. Shiplap joints must occur over framing and must overlap a minimum of 1 / 2 inch (12.7 mm). The R-Tech One-Coat Stucco Boards are installed directly to framing and fastened to exterior framing spaced a maximum of 24 inches (610 mm) on center, except where further limited by the requirements for the wall covering. Fasteners used to attach the boards to framing are minimum 6d ring-shank nails and 15 / 16 -inch-diameter (23.8 mm) plastic washers, or equivalent, spaced at 12 inches (305 mm) on center, or 1-inch-wide-crown (25.4 mm), 1 3 / 4 -inch-long (44.5 mm), No. 16 gage staples spaced at 6 inches (152 mm) on center. Joints between boards, and corners created with the board, must be taped with PolyGuard 136 polyethylene tape centered over the joint. R-Tech One Coat Stucco Boards must be installed with a weep screed. See Figure 3 for typical installation details. R-Tech One Coat Stucco Board used as a weather-resistive barrier requires the use around penetrations of peel-and-stick flashing, complying with the ICC-ES Interim Criteria for Flashing Materials (AC148), dated July 2001, as shown in Figure 4. For exterior plaster complying with UBC Section 2508, IBC Section 2512, or IRC Section R703.6, the length of the fasteners used to attach the lath must be proportionally increased based on the thickness of the R-Tech One Coat Stucco Board. The increase in fastener length is to maintain penetration into framing that is equivalent to that of fasteners attaching the lath without insulation. Racking shear capacities of exterior plaster shear walls using R-Tech One Coat Stucco Boards are beyond the scope of this report, as the effects on shear capacities of the space between the lath and the framing have not been investigated Penetrations: Flashing of flange-type window penetrations when R-Tech One Coat Stucco Board is used as a weather-resistive barrier is accompanied by installation of flashing complying with AC148, completely covering the framing sill and extending a minimum of 6 inches (51 mm) up the sides of the opening and approximately 1 1 / 2 inches (38 mm) beyond the face of the foam board at the front of the window opening. The flashing must be flush with the inside edge of the framing members on the inside of the wall. The flashing extending outside of the R-Tech One Coat Stucco Board is folded over the front face of the foam board. The flashing material is then cut over the channels in the foam board and gently pushed down into the channels to allow for drainage. See Figure 4 for details. Flashing of pipe penetrations is accomplished by sealing around the pipe with flashing complying with AC148. Flashing of other penetrating items must be in accordance with the wall covering manufacturer s instructions Cementitious Exterior Wall Coatings: R-Tech One Coat Stucco Board and R-Tech Gable-Gard are used with cementitious exterior wall coatings when installed in accordance with this section. When used with ICC-ES recognized cementitious exterior wall coatings, the R-Tech One Coat Stucco Boards are an alternative to 1-inch-thick (25.4 mm), 1.5 pcf density (24 kg/m 3 ) EPS foam plastic insulation specified in the evaluation report on the coating. When installed in accordance with Section of this report, the R-Tech One-Coat Stucco Boards may be used as an alternate to the Grade A, B, or C building paper specified in UBC Standard 14-1 or ASTM D 226. R-Tech One Coat Stucco Boards used in conjunction with stucco systems where the R-Tech One Coat Stucco Board is not the weather-resistive barrier, shall not be taped. When used with ICC-ES recognized cementitious exterior wall coatings, the R-Tech Gable-Guard installed on attic wall framing is an alternative to 1-inch-thick (25.4 mm), 1.5 pcf density (24 kg/m 3 ), EPS foam plastic insulation specified in the evaluation report on the coating. The R-Tech Gable- Guard is installed, with a weather-resistive barrier, directly to open framing with blocked insulation board joints, or is installed over solid sheathing. Conditions for the foam plastic insulation in the evaluation report on the coating system, such as orientation and tongue-and-groove edges, must be observed. 3 Page 3 of 9 ER-3414 Sonneborn (StuccoBase), ER-4658 Stonewall Products, Inc., ER-4988 Superwall Manufacturing, Inc., ER-4867 UltraKote Products, Inc., ER-4658 Western Stucco Products, Co., Inc., ER-3899 When installation is over wood-based sheathing, two layers of a Grade D weather-resistive barrier are required in accordance with Section of the UBC or Section of the IBC. 2.4 Board Production: The boards and architectural shapes are produced at the plants following the Premier Industries, Inc./ Quality Control Program. Quarterly, unannounced inspections are conducted by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. 2.5 Identification: Examples of marking for the EPS boards are shown in Figure 1. Labeling on insulation boards to be used in accordance with Section also includes the wording BASF BF, BASF BFL, NOVA Chemicals Dylite M77, or Huntsman Corporation Grade 54. Labeling on EPS boards to be used in accordance with Section also includes the wording NOVA Chemicals Dylite M33. R-Tech One Coat Stucco Boards are marked on the facer with the name, plant identification, thermal characteristics, surface-burning characteristics and name of the quality control agency (Underwriters Laboratories Inc.). A certificate noting the material type, manufacturer's name, plant identification number, project name, project location, UL label, surface-burning characteristics and physical characteristics of the EPS board is issued to the owner of the project. The PolyGuard 136 polyethylene tape is identified with the product name and the evaluation report number (ER-3414). 3.0 EVIDENCE SUBMITTED Data in accordance with the ICC-ES Interim Criteria for Foam Plastic Insulation (AC12), dated July 2002, including reports of tests in accordance with UBC Standard 26-3 and ASTM C , and comparative crawl space fire tests; and data in accordance with the ICC-ES Interim Criteria for Weatherresistive Barriers (AC38), dated July 2000, and the ICC-ES Interim Criteria for Foam Plastic Sheathing Panels Used as Weather-resistive Barriers (AC71), dated February 2003; and a quality control manual. 4.0 FINDINGS That the expanded polystyrene insulation described in this report complies with the 1997 Uniform Building Code (UBC), the 2000 International Building Code (IRC) and the 2000 International Residential Code (IRC), subject to the following conditions: 4.1 Insulation boards are limited to nonstructural applications, with other materials used to brace walls and resist horizontal forces. 4.2 Insulation boards are separated from the interior of the building with a thermal barrier complying with Section of the UBC, Section of the IBC or Section R of the IRC, except as described in Sections and of this report. 4.3 Recognition of R-Tech Stucco Boards as an alternative to Grade A, B or C weather-resistive barrier is for boards installed as described in Sections and of this report. 4.4 For buildings in which the R-Tech One-Coat Stucco Board described in this report is used as a weatherresistive barrier, all plans shall be accompanied by drawings, consistent with the illustrations in this report, that include the following: a. Installation at all openings, corners and insulation board terminations. b. Location, configuration and method of sealing of joints between boards and at corners. c. Typical cross section, showing all components of the wall. d. Typical wall pipe and window penetrations. 4.5 Insulation boards are manufactured at the facilities listed in Table 2, with quality control inspections by Underwriters Laboratories Inc. (AA- 668). This report is subject to re-examination in one year.
