3 PVC Stub Flanges & Backing Ring Introduction Replacing our traditional Cat.16 full face flange, Vinidex are pleased to offer their injection moulded PVC Stub Flange incorporating the Vinidex PVC Backing Ring. Flanged joints in pipelines are used to create a demountable joint for future disassembly to connect valves and vessels, where strength in tensions is required or to join to other materials. The Vinidex Stub Flanges and PVC Backing Rings enable easy access to joins for future maintenance. This unique, lightweight and corrosion resistant system, offers faster and easier connections as the Vinidex PVC Backing Rings are supplied with moulded bolt holes compatible with both Table D and Table E in accordance with AS 19. 4 PVC Stub Flanges & Backing Ring 4. Check that the nuts and bolts easily screw together and have sufficient thread to enable the sealing surfaces to meet and to be tensioned. 5. Place Backing Ring on the pipe in readiness for jointing, ensuring the ribbed side of the Backing Ring is facing the Stub Flange. Design The Vinidex PVC Stub Flanges and Backing Rings are designed in accordance with Australian Standards, and as such the relevant sections of the Vinidex Water Supply Technical Manual for PVC Pressure Pipe Systems apply. To ensure a long service life, the Vinidex PVC Stub Flanges and Backing Rings should be installed in accordance with AS/NZS566.1:1998. Installation This section should be read in conjunction with Australian Standards AS03 - Installation of UPVC Systems. Installers should also be familiar with the Vinidex Water Supply Manual for PVC Pressure Pipe Systems, Technical Manual. Assembly Preparation prior to assembly will be a key function to a successful installation. Prior to installation a number of checks need to be carried out: 1. Ensure the sealing faces of both the Stub Flange and the mating surface are flat, clean and with no evidence of burrs or notches. 6. Having cut the pipe to the correct length, prepare the pipe end and the socket of the Stub Flange for solvent cementing to each other. The preparation and the solvent cement joint are to be executed in accordance with AS03. With the Flange Plate held captive on the pipe, the following steps are mandatory. 1. Washers to be placed under the heads of all bolts and nuts to spread the force and prevent damage to the Backing Ring.. Tighten bolts gradually by pulling down the nuts diametrically opposite each other using a torque wrench to ensure even loading around the bolt heads and nuts, Figure Tighten each bolt several times repeating the process pattern. 4. The final recommended torque value for Stub Flange bolts are shown in Table. Figure When jointing flange to ring, check the size and number of the nuts and bolts are in accordance with AS19, Table D or Table E. 3. When determining the bolt length consideration should be given to the thickness of the PVC Backing Ring. Thicknesses of PVC Backing Rings are shown in Table below. Nominal Size Torque Table. 5 PVC Stub Flanges & Backing Ring Alignment Alignment of the Stub Flange to the mating flange should be installed with the normal installation tolerance in accordance with Australian Standards AS03. The Stub Flange joint should be completed and allowed to cure prior to torquing the flange bolts. Premature torquing of the bolts will cause movement of the joint and weaken the joint itself. Pressure Testing Upon completion, the system should be pressure tested in accordance with Australian Standard AS03. As the Stub Flange is solvent cemented to the pipe the system should not be pressure tested until at least 4 hours after the last joint has been made.
