Architecture Test By: Mara Yella & Danny Surujdeo P1 House 1 Lines: While straight lines are used, curved lines can also be seen which give an interesting look to the building. The curved lines are used only on the roof, which is a Mansard Roof, and they slope inwards. Color: The color of this house is a light cream or beige color which is a warm color. Many other Second Empire style houses are made with warm colors. Texture: The roof has a rough texture because it is made up of individual shingles and the main walls of the building also have a rough texture since they re made with stone. Form and Shape: The main part of the building is a rectangular prism. Cylinders are also used in the columns which hold up the awning over the door. Value: The colors used are tints because they are pale, and not very vibrant or bright. Balance: There is horizontal balance and symmetry since the left side of the building is mirrored on the right. Rhythm: The windows are repeated in an even pattern, showing regular rhythm Emphasis: Because the roof style is a distinctive feature of the Second Empire style, there is emphasis on it. Unity: The entire building has the same color palette which is a pale beige color. Architectural Style: Second Empire
House 2 Lines: All lines are straight and either horizontal or vertical. The only diagonal lines are shown in the slope of the roof. Space: The space on the exterior is very filled up, however every feature has its place, therefore it s not cluttered. Color: The main color of this house is red which is a warm color. Value: The value of the red color is more of a tint than a shade. The red isn t very vibrant, making it a tint. Balance: This style of building also uses horizontal symmetry. Rhythm: The windows use regular rhythm. They re evenly space and all about the same size. Movement: There isn t any movement in the building. Due to the straight lines, the building seems very rigid and stiff. Contrast: The red of the exterior and the black of the shutters create color contrast. Architectural Style: Colonial Revival
House 3 Lines: Curved lines are used to connect the overhanging roof and the exterior walls. Other than those lines, all the others are straight. Color: The main color of the building is pink. This is a mixture of red and white, meaning that pink is still a warm color. Texture: The sides of the building have a smooth texture. This is because of the material used for the walls. However, one side appears to have a rough texture because of long horizontal shingles and the shutters also have a rough texture. Form and Shape: Mostly, the building is just two rectangular prisms attached to each other. In addition to this, there are cylinders used for the columns. Balance: This building has asymmetrical balance. This is because of the larger tower part of the house. Proportion and Scale: It appears like the ratio between the tower and the shorter part of the building is about 3:2, while the slight second roof over the first floor of the shorter section divides the top and bottom evenly in half. Contrast: The color of the shutters and the main color of the house create contrast since black and pink aren t very similar. Architectural Style: Italianate
House 4 Lines: Straight lines are emphasized in the walls and they generally emphasize horizontal lines because the structure feels more stretched out then stretched up. Space: There is little empty space, as the space is occupied by the lines on the walls. Texture: The brick material used to create the bottom half of the structure gives the building a rough texture for the bottom half. Brick and stone were the common materials used at the time. Form and Shape: While the main structure is rectangular, the steep triangular roof makes the building seems taller. Balance: There is asymmetrical balance. Rhythm: There is irregular rhythm with generally tall windows. Emphasis: Emphasis is placed on the lines on the walls, as they seem different from other types of architecture. Unity: Unity is achieved by consistently using the lines on the walls and consistent use of the colored stone and brick. Architectural Style: Tudor Revival
House 5 Lines: There is major use of horizontal lines, as the ranch style emphasized longer structure as opposed to taller structure. Space: There is plenty of open space and the space is uncluttered. This is noticeable because there is plenty of empty space with grass around the structure. Form and Shape: The building shape is a long, short rectangular box, which was common in ranch style buildings. Balance: There is asymmetrical balance. Rhythm: Irregular rhythm is used in the windows as most of the windows are the same size and shape while some have the same shape but different sizes. Emphasis: Emphasis is placed on the horizontal length of the building through the use of the horizontal lines. Unity: Unity is achieved by the consistent use of color on the walls. In addition, the roof contained one color and shape throughout the structure. Architectural Style: Ranch
House 6 Lines: Horizontal and vertical lines are used to create cube-like and rectangular-like shapes. Space: Little ornamentation creates very uncluttered space. Color: There is the tendency for a white render, which shows in the color of the structure. Texture: The reinforced concrete managed to give the building a smooth texture. Form and Shape: The use of general cubic shapes is very prominent. Balance: There is asymmetrical balance. Rhythm: Regular rhythm was used in the large windows. Emphasis: Emphasis is placed Unity: Unity is achieved through the consistent use of the white reinforced concrete. In addition, the entire structure uses different instances of a cube shape, which is typical in modern architecture. Architectural Style: Modernist
Accepted Architectural Styles 1. Classical Revival 2. French 3. Texas Regional Vernacular 4. Tudor 5. Mediterranean 6. Modern Classical Revival Classical Revival design seeks to emulate elements of Ancient
