1 TCC Systems Timber-Concrete Composite TIMBER IMAGINEERING INNOVATIVE TIMBER SOLUTIONS
2 INTRODUCTION Timber-Concrete Composite (TCC) is an innovative structural system that maximizes the structural advantage of both materials to create an efficient, cost-effective solution to many framing applications. This unique framing system is comprised of our innovative shear connectors embedded into the joist with a screed of concrete and reinforcing mesh laid over top. By engaging the materials together structurally the result is a highly efficient structural system with minimal depths and maximum strength. TCC is designed and fabricated to Australian standards, and is structurally certified by Timber Imagineering. Specifying Timber-Concrete Composite Joist depth (e.g. 240mm) TCC Joist spacing (e.g. 600mm) Note: Timber Imagineering will design mesh, concrete, and shear connector to maximize efficiency. Range and Capabilities TCC floor systems have many applications and can be used in various conditions. Timber Imagineering has applied this system for spans ranging from 4m to 14.5m. TCC is primarily used as an easier, more economical alternative to concrete. Timber Imagineering can provide costs for both cast-in-place and TCC options to see if it makes sense for your project. Cross Sections TCC primarily comes in various sizes of LVL joists and spacings. A standard TCC system is comprised of the following: Concrete screed Welded Wire Mesh Shear connectors 15mm CNC-cut plywood (20mm for 800mm cts) LVL joists Standard Sizes and Spacings TCC systems are readily available in, but not limited to, the following sizes and spacings. Joists are typically wide LVL. 3 Advantages Reduced floor depths and joist sizes CNC-cut structural plywood also acts as permanent formwork Minimal propping required (typically mid-span only) Lighter structure, resulting in smaller footings and lower costs Timber allows for adjustability on site should any issues arise Wide variety of depths, spacings and materials available Comes as a full system including connections, fasteners, etc. Acoustic and fire data available from Timber Imagineering Can be supplied as poured panels, or as individual joists Can be easily formed and installed by a carpenter No need for concrete specialists Design, detailing and certification included Timber made from sustainable materials Custom sizes and materials available Can easily intergrate hydronic heating INTRODUCTION Design & Detailing To assist engineers, designers, and specifiers, Timber Imagineering in association with Tim Gibney and Associates Structural Engineers will provide design and certification for the sizes, materials and detailing as required. Some typical details can be seen on page 3. Applications Residential floor systems Office spaces Commercial floors Long-span/open areas Wall panels Accessible roof areas School spaces Pedestrian bridges Industrial applications Structural Design TCC Systems are designed in accordance with the relevant Australian standards and the first principles of structural mechanics. Australian Standards AS Design action 2011 AS Timber design AS AS3600 Concrete Structures TCC innovative testing Timber Imagineering has commissioned several tests and reports on their innovative TCC system to ensure that the system is efficient Live load Some typical live loads per AS1170 are shown below and were used to generate span tables as shown on pages 5-6. For other loading conditions please contact Timber Imagineering for more information. Live Load 1.5kPa 2.0kPa 3.0kPa Application Residential - General areas Other applications - General areas Offices, commercial, some assembly areas Safety Structure must be reviewed by engineer prior to pour. Propping For many simple span conditions, joists will need to be propped and cambered during concrete pour to minimize deflection. Consult Timber Imagineering for propping and camber requirements specific to your project conditions. Load bearing wall bracing Loading bearing walls (and non-loading bearing walls that may take load) will need to be checked to ensure they are adequately blocked and braced during concrete pour. Holes/notches Consult Timber Imagineering before notching or drilling timber joists. Fire/Acoustics See page 3 for requirements and more information. Typical details See page 3 for some typical connection details Span Tables TCC span tables on pages 5-6 can be used to determine the required joist size and spacing for several given spans and loading conditions. 2
4 TYPICAL DETAILS Fire Timber-Concrete Composite systems have some inherent fire resistance and may meet code requirements through natural charring. There are two approaches to ensuring that the structural system has enough fire resistance: Fire Resistance Option 1 - Calculate the inherent resistance of the timber joists based on a charring rate, reduced section and reduced load case. Increasing the width of the joists will often result in adequate fire resistance. Fire Resistance Option 2 - Add 2 layers of fire-resistance plasterboard or as-required to acheive adequate fire resistance. This will likely also offer benefits with the acoustics. Acoustics Timber Imagineering has a commissioned acoustical engineering report specific to their TCC systems. A typical example of a system that meets both the footfall and airborne noise requirements is shown below. Contact Timber Imagineering for more acoustically acceptable TCC solutions. 5 Supply Option 1 - Cast-in-shop Panels Craned into place on site Little site work required Fast and easy install TCC SOLUTIONS Supply Option 2 - Kit Components easily installed by hand No crane required Concrete poured on site Alternative TCC Solutions At Timber Imagineering we are always thinking of new ways to be innovative and efficient. TCC systems do not need to be limited to cassette panels and can be used in other applications, such as CLT and LVL slabs as shown below.
