2 ICC-ES Evaluation Report ESR-3499 Reissued February 2016 Revised November 2017 This report is subject to renewal February (800) (562) A Subsidiary of the International Code Council DIVISION: CONCRETE Section: Maintenance of Concrete CONCRETE STRENGTHENING USING THE MAPEWRAP FRP COMPOSITE SYSTEMS 1.0 EVALUATION SCOPE Compliance with the following codes: 2015, 2012 and 2009 International Building Code (IBC) 2015, 2012 and 2009 International Residential Code (IRC) 1997 Uniform Building Code (UBC) Properties evaluated: Structural Durability Fire resistance Interior Finish 2.0 USES The MAPEWRAP FRP composite systems are used to externally strengthen existing normal-weight reinforced concrete structural elements as an alternative to systems permitted in the IBC and UBC. For structures regulated under the IRC, the MAPEWRAP FRP composite systems may be used where an engineering design is submitted in accordance with Section R and may be used where approved by the code official in accordance with IRC Section R DESCRIPTION 3.1 General: The MAPEWRAP FRP Composite Systems are comprised of carbon fabrics combined with resins which, in combination, create the FRP composite system. 3.2 Material: General: All material must comply with the approved specifications outlined in in the Mapei quality documentation, dated August Fabrics: MAPEWRAP C UNI-AX 300 SP: Mapewrap C UNI-AX 300 SP is a continuous-fiber, unidirectional, carbon-fiber fabric supplied in rolls that are 3.94 in., 7.87 in., in., and in. (100 mm, 200 mm, 500 mm, and 600 mm) wide by yards (50 m) long. Weight is 9 ounces per square yard (300 g/m 2 ) MAPEWRAP C UNI-AX 300: Mapewrap C UNI- AX 300 is a continuous-fiber, unidirectional, carbon-fiber fabric supplied in rolls that are 3.94 in., 7.87 in., and in. (100 mm, 200 mm, and 400 mm) wide by yards (50 m) long. Weight is 9 ounces per square yard (300 g/m 2 ) MAPEWRAP C UNI-AX 600: Mapewrap C UNI- AX 600 is a continuous-fiber, unidirectional, carbon-fiber fabric supplied in rolls that are 3.94 in., 7.87 in., and in. (100 mm, 200 mm, 400 mm) wide by yards (50 m) long. Weight is 18 ounces per square yard (600 g/m 2 ) Resins: MAPEWRAP 31 SP: Mapewrap 31 SP is an ambient cured epoxy resin mix used to bind the MAPEWRAP C UNI-AX 300 SP fabric. Components A and B of the epoxy system are shipped in 33 and 11-lbs (15 kg and 5 kg) buckets, respectively, and must be mixed at a volumetric ratio of 3:1 (A:B). The product components must be stored in original sealed packaging in temperatures not lower than 41 F (5 C) for a maximum of shelf life of 24 months MAPEWRAP 31: Mapewrap 31 is an ambient cure epoxy resin mix used to bind the MAPEWRAP C UNI-AX 300 and MAPEWRAP C UNI-AX 600 fabrics. Components A and B of the epoxy system are shipped in 8.82-lb. and 2.21-lb. (4.0 kg and 1.0 kg) buckets, respectively, and must be mixed at a volumetric ratio of 4:1 (A:B). Pot life is forty minutes at 73 F (23 C) and twenty minutes at 86 F (30 C). (0.500 mm) MAPEWRAP C UNI-AX MAPEWRAP 31: In the primary direction (0 ), the carbon fiber composite system has a minimum ultimate tensile strength of 216 ksi (1492 MPa), a minimum tensile modulus of 12,161 ksi (83.8 GPa), and a corresponding elongation of 1.70 percent. Nominal layer thickness is in. (0.500 mm) MAPEWRAP C UNI-AX MAPEWRAP 31 : In the primary direction (0 ), the carbon fiber composite system has a minimum ultimate tensile strength 210 ksi (1450 MPa), a minimum tensile modulus of 11,875 ksi (81.8 GPa), and a corresponding elongation of 1.76 percent. Nominal layer thickness is in. (1.000 mm) VAGALighTher Coating: VAGALighTher is a water-based lightweight inorganic mortar used for over the MAPEWRAP FRP Composite Systems as a coating. VAGALighTher is packaged in 44 lb (20 kg) bags, and is mixed with 0.92 gallons (3.5 L) of potable water. 4.0 DESIGN AND INSTALLATION 4.1 Design: General: Design of the composite system must be based on required tensile loads at designated concrete strain values. The strength design requirements for concrete must be in accordance with Chapter 19 of the IBC or UBC. The registered design professional must be responsible for determining, through analysis, the strengths and demands of the structural elements to be enhanced by the MAPEWRAP FRP Systems, subject to approval of the code official Composite Design Properties: Structural design properties for the composites are found in the Mapei Design Manual (hereinafter referred to as the DM), Revision: 1; dated July 28, Design Details: Design equations described in the DM are based on test results and principles of structural analysis as set forth in Section of the IBC and Section 1605 of the UBC. Bases of design include strain compatibility, load equilibrium and limit states. All designs must follow procedures as detailed in the IBC or UBC; in the ICC-ES Acceptance Criteria for Concrete and Reinforced and Unreinforced Masonry Strengthening Using Externally Bonded Fiber-reinforced Polymer (FRP) Composite Systems (AC125), dated August 2014; and in the DM, dated July 28, 2016, Revision 1. A copy of the DM must be submitted to the code official for approval of each project Design Strength: Design strengths must be taken as the nominal strength, computed in accordance with Section of this report, multiplied by strength reduction factors provided in Section 21.2 of ACI (2015 IBC), Section 9.3 of ACI (2012 IBC) or ACI (2009 IBC), or Chapter 19 of the UBC, and modified by AC125, as applicable Load Combinations: The load combinations used in design must comply with Section of the IBC, or Section of the UBC Columns: Potential Applications: The composite systems are applied to circular or rectangular concrete columns to enhance their axial, flexural and shear strengths for gravity (nondynamic) and wind load resistance Structural Design Requirements: Concrete column design must comply with the DM and with Chapter 19 of the IBC or UBC Beams and Slabs: Potential Applications: The composite systems are applied to concrete beams to enhance their flexural and shear strengths, and concrete slabs to enhance flexural strength for gravity load or wind load resistance only Structural Design Requirements: Concrete beam design must comply with the DM and with Chapter 19 of the IBC or UBC Bond Strength: Where the performance of the MAPEWRAP FRP composite systems defined in this report depends on bond, the bond strength of MAPEWRAP FRP Composite material to concrete must not be less than 200 psi (1378 kpa). Bond testing must exhibit failure in the concrete substrate. Testing in accordance with ASTM D7234 or D7522 may be used to estimate the bond strength of bond-critical installations. 4.2 Installation: Installation must be performed by certified applicators in accordance with the Mapei Installation Guide for MAPEWRAP FRP Composite Systems that can be found in the product specifications. Installation of the system must comply with the requirements set forth in the product specifications as follows: TABLE 1 MAPEWRAP FRP SYSTEM SPECIFICATION NUMBERS MAPEWRAP FRP SYSTEM COMPONENT MAPEWRAP C UNI-AX 300 and MAPEWRAP C UNI-AX 600 MAPEWRAP C UNI-AX 300 SP SPECIFICATION NUMBER (GB) MAPEWRAP 31SP MAPEWRAP _ Saturation: The fibers and the matrix must be combined in accordance with an established weight-andvolume ratio as indicated in the specification referenced in Table 1, using manual methods Application: The saturated composite fabric must be applied to the prepared concrete substrate using manual (hand-applied) methods. Manual methods must be used to remove air bubbles and to ensure desired fiber orientation. Note that the pot life of the saturated fabric depends on the pot life of the resin system and may vary with ambient temperature, where higher temperatures result in a lesser pot life, and lower temperatures result in a longer pot life Paint Finish: The cured composite can be coated with paint. Paints may be applied as required for weather protection and/or aesthetic considerations Cure Time Prior to Loading: MAPEWRAP FRP composite system must be allowed a minimum of 48 hours of cure time (depending on temperatures) prior to application of superimposed loading onto the structural member.

4 ESR-3499 Most Widely Accepted and Trusted Page 3 of Interior Finish: The MAPEWRAP FRP Composite Systems, when coated with minimum 0.4 inch (10 mm) VAGALighTher finish coating, have a flame spread index of 25 or less and a smoke developed index of 450 or less, when tested in accordance with ASTM E84, and are classified as Class A in accordance with IBC Section 803 and Class 1 in accordance with UBC Section 802. The MAPEWRAP C UNI-AX MAPEWRAP 31 and MAPEWRAP C UNI-AX 300 SP + MAPEWRAP 31 SP composite systems must be limited to a maximum of eight layers and MAPEWRAP C UNI-AX MAPEWRAP 31 composite systems must be limited to a maximum of four layers. Application instructions for the VAGALighTher are detailed in the report holder s published installation instructions for the VAGALighTher finish coating. 4.3 Special Inspection: Special inspection must comply with the applicable requirements in Sections 1704 through 1709 of the 2015 and 2012 IBC, Sections 1704 through 1712 of the 2009 IBC. Special inspection during the installation of the system must be in accordance with the ICC-ES Acceptance Criteria for Inspection and Verification of Concrete and Unreinforced Masonry Strengthening Using Fiber-reinforced Polymer (FRP) Composite Systems (AC178), dated December A statement of special inspection must be prepared in accordance with Sections of the 2015 and 2012 IBC or Section 1705 of the 2009 IBC. 5.0 CONDITIONS OF USE The MAPEWRAP FRP Composites Systems described in this report comply with, or are suitable alternatives to what is specified in, those codes listed in Section 1.0 of this report, subject to the following conditions: 5.1 Design and installation of MAPEWRAP FRP Composite Systems must be in accordance with this report, Mapei FRP System Specifications, the Design Manual (DM), Revision 1, DM dated July 28, 2016; and the IBC or UBC, as applicable. 5.2 Copies of the Design Manual and Mapei FRP System Specifications must be submitted to the code official in conjunction with each project using the system. 5.3 Complete construction documents, including plans and calculations verifying compliance with this report, must be submitted to the code official for each project at the time of permit application. The construction documents must be prepared and sealed by a registered design professional where required by the statutes of the jurisdiction in which the project is to be constructed. 5.4 Special inspection for jobsite application of the MAPEWRAP FRP Composite Systems must be provided in accordance with Section 4.3 of this report. 5.5 The fire-resistance rating of the assembly complying with Chapter 7 of the IBC or UBC is not reduced by the application of the MAPEWRAP FRP Composite Systems. The structural load-carrying capacities of fire-resistance-rated assemblies must be based on the design of the concrete without the MAPEWRAP FRP Composite Systems. Fire resistance of assemblies with structural load-carrying capacities increased beyond the levels permitted by the IBC or UBC is beyond the scope of this report. 5.6 Use of the MAPEWRAP FRP Composite Systems as interior wall and ceiling finish materials must comply with Section of this report. 5.7 Use of MAPEWRAP FRP Composite Systems for applications where FRP system is in constant contact with soil is outside the scope of this report. 5.8 Application of the systems to concrete members at a fabricator s facility must be by an approved fabricator complying with Section of the 2015 IBC, of the 2012 IBC, of the 2009 IBC, or Section of the UBC, or at a jobsite with continuous special inspections in accordance with Section of the 2015 and 2012 IBC, of the 2009 IBC or Sections and of the UBC. 5.9 The MAPEWRAP FRP composite systems component materials are manufactured under an inspection program with inspections by ICC Evaluation Service, LLC. 6.0 EVIDENCE SUBMITTED Data in accordance with the ICC-ES Acceptance Criteria for Concrete and Reinforced and Unreinforced Masonry Strengthening Using Fiber-reinforced, Composite Systems (AC125), dated August 2014 (editorially revised November 2015). 7.0 IDENTIFICATION The MAPEWRAP FRP composite systems components are labeled in accordance with the Mapei quality documentation and contain at a minimum: company name and address of Mapei S.P.A., product name, expiration date, and evaluation report number (ESR-3499).

5 ICC-ES Evaluation Report (800) (562) ESR-3499 CBC Supplement Issued April 2017 This report is subject to renewal February A Subsidiary of the International Code Council DIVISION: CONCRETE Section: Maintenance of Concrete CONCRETE STRENGTHENING USING THE MAPEWRAP FRP COMPOSITE SYSTEMS 1.0 REPORT PURPOSE AND SCOPE Purpose: The purpose of this evaluation report supplement is to indicate that concrete strengthening using the MAPEWRAP FRP Composite Systems, recognized in ICC-ES master report ESR-3499, have also been evaluated for compliance with Chapters 7, 8, 19 and 19A of the code noted below. Applicable code edition: 2016 California Building Code (CBC) 2.0 CONCLUSIONS Concrete strengthening using the MAPEWRAP FRP Composite Systems, described in Sections 2.0 through 7.0 of the master evaluation report ESR-3499, complies with CBC Chapters 7, 8, 14, 19 and 19A provided the design and installation are in accordance with the 2015 International Building Code (IBC) provisions noted in the master report and the additional requirements of CBC Chapters 7, 8, 16, 16A, 17, 17A, 19 and 19A, as applicable. The systems recognized in this supplement have not been evaluated under 2016 CBC Chapter 7A for use in the exterior design and construction of new buildings located in any Fire Hazard Severity Zone within State Responsibility Areas or any Wildland-Urban Interface Fire Area.. The systems recognized in this supplement have not been evaluated for compliance with the International Wildland Urban Interface Code.
