ASTM C Standard Specification for Installation of lathing and furring to Receive Interior and Exterior Portland Cement- Based Plaster

1. Scope 1.1 This specification covers the minimum requirements for lathing and furring for the application of exterior and interior portland cement-based plaster as in Specification C 926 or Specification C 841.

3.2 Definitions of Terms Specific To This Standard control joint, a joint that accommodates movement of plaster shrinkage and curing along predetermined, usually straight, lines expansion joint, a joint that accommodates movement beyond plaster shrinkage and curing.

3.2 Definitions of Terms Specific To This Standard continued hangers, wires or steel rods or straps used to support main runners for suspended ceilings beneath floor or roof constructions inserts, devices embedded in concrete structural members to provide a loop or opening for attachment of hangers. 14

3.2 Definitions of Terms Specific To This Standard continued saddle tie, see Figs. 1 and 2. 15

3.2 Definitions Of Terms Specific To This Standard self-furring, a metal plaster base manufactured with evenly-spaced indentations that hold the body of the lath approximately ¼ away from solid surfaces to which it is applied framing member, studs, joist, runners (track), bridging, bracing, and related accessories manufactured or supplied in wood or light gauge steel.

6. Materials 6.1 Metal Plaster Bases: Expanded Metal Lath Specification C 847, galvanized Wire Laths: Welded Wire Lath Specification C Woven Wire Lath Specification C Paper Backed Plaster Bases Specification C

Diamond Mesh Flat Lath Flat Lath is manufactured from prime quality steel sheets that are slit and expanded to form small diamond shaped openings. This large number of openings provides more plaster keys, providing better scratch coat bonding in either pumped or troweled applications. Each sheet has square ends and smooth parallel edges on sides for fast, easy handling and bending for curved surfaces.

Self-Furred Diamond Mesh Lath Self-Furred Lath is used extensively in exterior stucco and stone work over sheathing and as a plaster base over masonry walls. Self-furring dimples or embossed V grooves hold the lath approximately ¼ away from solid surfaces to aid in the keying of stucco to the lath.

1/8 Rib Lath (Flat Lath) 1/8 Flat Rib Lath has eighteen ribs, 1/8 high, spaced 1½ on center. The 2.75 lbs. product may be installed over horizontal spans up to 16 on center, and the 3.4 lbs. product may be installed over spans of 19 on center, when following ASTM C This lath sheet still requires furring on solid substrates.

3/8 Rib Lath (High Rib) 3/8 High Rib Lath is designed with seven longitudinal ribs (each 3/8 deep) and eight small flat ribs in between the high ribs. This product is used almost exclusively for ceiling and soffit applications. ASTM C-1063 allows High Rib Lath to span up to 24 on center between framing both vertically and horizontally.

Striplath Striplath is galvanized, diamond mesh lath, produced in 4 and 6 wide strips with smooth edges. Striplath is used to reinforce plaster around door and window corners, reducing cracks caused by stress. 22

6. Materials 6.2 Accessories: General - All accessories shall have perforated or expanded flanges or clips shaped to permit complete embedment in the plaster, to provide means for accurate alignment, and to secure attachment of the accessory to the underlying surface. Accessories shall be designed to receive application of the specified plaster thickness.

6. Materials Accessories shall be fabricated from Zinc Alloy (99 % pure zinc), galvanized (zinc coated) steel, rigid PVC or CPVC plastic, or anodized aluminum alloy. See Specification B 221. (See Table 1 for minimum allowable thicknesses). NOTE 2 - The selection of an appropriate type of material for accessories shall be determined by applicable surrounding climatic and environmental conditions specific to the project location, such as salt air, industrial pollution, high moisture, or humidity.

6. Materials Foundation Weep Screed - Accessory used to terminate portland cement based stucco at the bottom of exterior walls. This accessory shall have a sloped, solid, or perforated, ground or screed flange to facilitate the removal of moisture from the wall cavity and a vertical attachment flange not less than 3½ in. long.

Foundation Weep Screed Foundation Weep Screeds are required at the base of walls as part of a drainage system for exterior stucco or veneer stone applications. The 3½ nailing flange serves as flashing when Grade D building paper or starter strips are installed over the flange. Holes are punched into the nailing flange for easy attachment to the wall. Holes are also placed in the V stop to provide keying of the stucco mud when wet. As the mud cures, it will shrink slightly away from the V stop, allowing moisture to flow down the building paper and exit the sloped V stop surface. 34

Typical Foundation Weep Screed

Mid-Wall Weep Screed Mid-Wall Weep Screed performs as an unpunched weep screed allowing excess moisture to escape the back of a stucco membrane. This screed also performs as an expansion joint with twin grounds. Installed where a framed stucco surface meets a masonry stucco surface.

Typical Expansion Joint Vinyl M-Type Expansion Joint is designed to relieve stress in the stucco membrane caused by typical stucco shrinkage and thermal movement.

Two Piece Expansion Joint Designed to relieve stresses in stucco wall and ceiling areas where a greater than normal degree of movement might occur. Allows for movement in two different planes. Used where two different framing materials meet and at through wall construction joints.
