2 Vencel Resil is one of the UK s largest manufacturer s of expanded polystyrene (EPS) and under the Jablite brand, supplies a range of bespoke insulation products and solutions to the construction, industrial and housebuilding markets. Vencel Resil specialises in providing industry-leading insulation solutions that meet current and future Building Regulations requirements for the specification of floors, walls and roofs of commercial, public sector and residential buildings. Established in 1973, the company has been a member of the Synbra Group since Synbra is a multi-national organisation specialising in producing high quality EPS products throughout Europe. Being part of a European group means having the benefit of access to extensive resources and technology. Technical support Vencel Resil provides technical and design support and has a dedicated team of professionals who have extensive experience of working in the industry. Many clients find the technical support they receive invaluable in ensuring that specifications are in line with modern building requirements. Being more than just a manufacturer of EPS products, it is the company s expertise within this sector and the knowledge within its team which establishes Vencel Resil as one of the leading providers of high performance insulation. Jablite a market leading insulation material Vencel Resil has a major UK manufacturing base, where its Jablite expanded polystyrene products can be produced to specific grades and thicknesses to suit clients needs. As such, the company is constantly seeking ways to enhance the performance of the range. Jablite EPS is a proven insulation material, widely regarded as one of the most effective on the market, offering high thermal performance, unrivalled sustainability credentials, long-term durability, whilst ensuring its cost effectiveness in the market. Jablite Premium Jablite Premium is an innovative Low Lambda (EPS) insulation material that has the capacity to enhance a building s thermal performance by up to 20%. This enables builders and contractors to meet ever tightening Building Regulations without having to change their build practices A relatively new innovation in EPS insulation, Jablite Premium is becoming widely used in the floors, walls and roofs of domestic, public sector and commercial buildings. Instantly recognisable by its distinctive grey board with orange speckles, it provides the reassurances to architects, specifiers and contractors that the material used on site is the same as the one specified and, crucially, that the resulting performance matches the approved design intent. A major benefit of Jablite Premium is that it offers improved U-values without having to alter the thickness of the cavity wall or change the construction of the floor or roof. This ensures contractors on site maintain their efficiency, whilst clients benefit from maximum internal floorspace and low running costs. BRE Green Guide to Specification The Green Guide, produced by the British Research Establishment (BRE), assesses a range of building products environmental performance over their full life-span and awards them with a sustainability rating. EPS has achieved an A+, which is the highest rating possible and clearly demonstrates the material s excellent thermal and environmental credentials. The BRE ranks materials on the basis that the benefit of using any of the insulation types listed in the guide will outweigh the embodied environmental impact of their manufacture, installation and end-of-life disposal. Environmental credentials Expanded polystyrene is recognised for its excellent energy efficiency and low environmental impact. It has an ODP (Ozone Depletion Potential) of zero and a low GWP (Global Warming Potential), which is exemplary. Vencel Resil is fully committed to sustainability in all areas of its operation. Energy saving and modern methods of construction are all carefully considered when researching and developing new products, as well as end of life recyclability.

3Floor Insulation 3 APPLICATION: Product: Jablite Premium board Jabfloor Premium 70 and 100 Jablite Premium Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) can be used below ground level even within the water table to provide insulation to the walls and floors of basement constructions. Jablite Premium can be placed internally or externally and is available in a wide range of grades suitable for both domestic and non-domestic applications. Jablite Premium board and Jabfloor Premium Jablite Premium board is used to insulate the vertical wall of the basement. Jabfloor Premium 70 and 100 can be used to insulate the floor either below the concrete slab or above the concrete slab with a screed or chipboard finish to satisfy the relevant U-value requirements. The specification of the grade for the floor will be dependant on the loads it will be required to withstand. Jabfloor 70 is mainly used internally in domestic basement floors, whereas Jabfloor 100 is widely used internally for commercial applications or where higher loads are expected on the insulation. Easy to handle Jablite Premium board and Jabfloor Premium are manufactured from expanded polystyrene (EPS) which is lightweight and easy to handle on site. Permanent Jablite Premium board and Jabfloor Premium are rot-proof and durable and will remain effective for the life of the building. Jablite Premium EPS is a non-hygroscopic, closed cell material. When installed within ground water conditions the water absorption levels are not sufficient to affect the thermal or other physical properties of the insulation material. Rapid Construction No specialised trades or equipment are required. Environment Expanded polystyrene has been awarded an A+ rating by the BRE s Green Guide to Specification. Type Jablite Premium board and Jabfloor Premium are supplied as EPS 70 and 100 as defined in BS EN Reaction to Fire Class E, containing a flame retardant additive. Dimensions Standard Size: 1200 x 2400mm Standard Thicknesses: 25, 30, 40, 50, 60, 75, 100, 120, 150 and 200mm (Other thicknesses available to order). Fire Basement external walls and floors are not required to provide fire resistance. When installed externally the Jablite Premium board and Jabfloor Premium are protected by the concrete structure. When placed internally the Jablite Premium board must be lined with 12.5mm plasterboard or equivalent. Jabfloor Premium placed internally will be protected by the screed or chipboard and will have no adverse effect on the fire performance of the floor. Jablite Premium Insulation is supplied as Euroclass E flame retardant material. U-values The rate of heat loss from a basement can be taken as a combined calculation of heat flow through the walls and the floor in accordance with BS EN ISO or each element can be assessed independently. The calculation methods are the same as for constructions above ground level but additionally take into account the average depth of the basement below ground. As with ground level floors the size and shape of the floor plan will determine the thickness of insulation required as the floor perimeter and floor area are used in the calculation where: P is length of exposed perimeter in metres and A is floor area in square metres. The measurement of both the floor area and perimeter should be made on the internal finished surface of the walls enclosing the heated space. Where the building has part ground floor and part basement an approximation of the heat loss via the ground can be obtained by treating the building as if it had a basement over its whole areas with the depth equal to half the actual depth of the basement part. Elements of unheated basements need not be insulated, however adequate insulation must be provided between the unheated basement and any heated areas.

4 Example calculations Example calculations are given below indicating information required to assess the insulation required in a standard basement construction. Floor Plan 6 x 8m detatched (All 4 sides exposed) Depth below ground 2.4m (Measured from ground level to finished basement floor level) Insulation placed externally Wall construction 12.5mm Plasterboard on dabs 150mm Insitu Concrete Wall 40mm Jablite Premium Insulation Board Type 70 Sacrificial protective board Earth backfill U value achieved: 0.33 W/m²K Floor construction 150mm Reinforced Insitu Concrete Floor slab 60mm Jabfloor Premium 100 Sand Blinding Compacted levelled earth U value achieved: 0.24 W/m²K Insulation placed internally Wall construction 12.5mm Plasterboard on dabs 50mm Jablite Premium Insulation Board Type 70 (placed between battens at 600mm centres) 150mm Insitu Concrete Wall Earth backfill U value achieved: 0.34 W/m²K Floor construction 65mm Screed 50mm Jabfloor Premium mm Reinforced Insitu Concrete Floor slab U value achieved: 0.25 W/m²K *The Damp Proof Membrane may be placed either internally or externally. Please note these constructions have been provided to give typical examples of insulated basement wall and floor elements and should in no way be reproduced or used as structural design solutions.

7 APPLICATION: INSTALLATION Walls When Jablite Premium board is placed externally the method of installation can vary. Jablite Premium board can be placed against the vertical surface of the excavation and retained by pinning into the ground. Tape the joints of the boards or place a membrane over them and pour concrete against the surface of the boards thereby using it as shuttering. With concrete block basement walls standard wall ties and fixing clips may be used for retaining Jablite Premium board against the outside surface. A sacrificial board such as hardboard should be placed against the outer face of the insulation to protect it from damage whilst backfilling. For solid concrete walls, proprietary wall ties with pads that can be adhered or mechanically fixed to the concrete can be used. Jablite Premium board is then pushed onto the fixings and retained with standard insulation retaining clips. When placed internally the Jablite Premium board must be placed between timber battens to provide a solid fixing for the plasterboard. Floors below concrete slab The surface of the ground should be compacted and levelled with sand to provide a fully supporting for Jabfloor Premium. Jabfloor Premium should be loose laid with joints tightly butted. If the concrete is to be poured directly onto the Jabfloor the joints should be taped with 75mm-wide adhesive tape to prevent the ingress of concrete or grout between the boards. The concrete slab is laid to the required thickness and either tamped or power floated to provide the required finish. During these operations, the surface of the Jabfloor or the DPM should be protected from impact damage or excessive trafficking by the use of spreader boards. Floors above concrete with a screed finish Jabfloor should be loose laid over the prepared surface; all joints should be tightly butted. The boards should be cut with a sharp knife to fit accurately around services. When applying a screed finish the joints of the Jabfloor boards should be taped with 75mm-wide adhesive tape to prevent ingress of screed between the boards. The recommendations of the appropriate parts of BS 8204 should always be followed. Sand/cement screeds should be at least 65mm-thick for domestic applications and 75mm-thick for non-domestic applications. In order to minimise cracking or curling, the screed should be laid so that jointless areas do not exceed 15m² and with the ratio of length to width not exceeding 1.5:1. If these limits cannot be observed, the use of a light-gauge galvanised metal reinforcement, placed centrally in the screed, will help to distribute shrinkage cracks evenly. During screeding operations, the surface of the Jabfloor should be protected from impact damage or excessive trafficking by the use of spreader boards. Floors above concrete slab with a chipboard finish The chipboard should be Type P5 with tongued-and-grooved edges as described in BS A minimum thickness of 18mm is required for domestic floors and 22mm for non-domestic floors. It is important that the recommendations given in BS 7916 are followed regarding protection of the chipboard from water spillage in bathrooms, kitchens and utility areas. Installation of the chipboard sheets should proceed from one corner of the room ensuring that a 10-12mm gap is maintained at the perimeter to allow for expansion. Temporary wedges should be placed in the expansion gaps during laying to allow the chipboard joints to be tightened; the wedges must be removed after the adhesive has dried. The boards should be laid with staggered joints, and all edges glued as laying proceeds using a PVA based woodworking adhesive. The chipboard should be supported where masonry partitions or other heavy structures are to be built directly onto the chipboard finish and at external and internal doorways. This is achieved by cutting back the insulation and providing a solid timber batten along the line of the partition or door opening, beneath the chipboard. The batten should be of preservative-treated timber, securely attached to the concrete floor using masonry nails or screws and plugs. In corridors, or wherever there are long uninterrupted runs of flooring, the inclusion of a 20mm expansion gap at 10m centres is required in addition to the 10-12mm perimeter gap. The edges of the chipboard at the expansion gap must be supported by a timber batten as described above.

8 Damp proof membrane A continuous tanking membrane is required in basement constructions. This membrane may be placed internally or externally to the Jablite insulation. Jablite Premium EPS is a closed cell material, its strength, thermal and all other physical properties are not affected by ground moisture and therefore can be placed directly into water logged ground. If a liquid membrane is used this will be applied to the concrete/blockwork basement construction surface. Care should be taken to ensure it is compatible with Jablite EPS and that it is completely dry before insulation is placed against it. Services It is permissible to accommodate services within the thickness of the insulation provided pipes etc are securely fixed to the structure. Jablite EPS should not be allowed to come into direct contact with PVC-sheathed cables, nor closer than 12mm to hot water pipes. Cables can be secured to ensure contact does not occur, placed in conduit or covered with any material such as polythene DPM or building paper. Pipes should be independently lagged. Underfloor heating pipes can be placed directly onto the surface of Jablite as these do not exceed the maximum working temperature of the insulation material. References BRE Report 262.
