4 INTRODUCTION THE PURPOSE OF THIS GUIDE IS TO EXPLORE IN MORE DETAIL CERTAIN AESTHETIC CHARACTERISTICS OF PERMACON S PRODUCTS AND PRESENT SEVERAL BEST PRACTICES WITH REGARDS TO MASONRY INSTALLATION. WE HOPE THIS GUIDE WILL HELP YOU ACHIEVE IN THE BEST POSSIBLE WAY YOUR MASONRY PROJECTS USING OUR EXTENSIVE PRODUCT LINES. SUGGESTION NO 2 AVOID LONG VERTICAL OR HORIZONTAL JOINTS To maintain an aesthetic appearance of the wall, we suggest taking the height of the largest stone as the maximum reference for the vertical joints. Concerning the length of the horizontal joints, they should be less than 4 feet long. WE HAVE INCLUDED SOME SUGGESTIONS TO FOLLOW WHEN INSTALLING MASONRY. PLEASE NOTE ALL PERMACON PRODUCTS ARE MANUFACTURED WITH NATURAL INGREDIENTS LIKE SAND AND STONE. THEREFORE, IT IS NORMAL AND DESIRABLE THAT THE FINAL BUILDING APPEARANCE SHOWS COLOR VARIATION. Max See Tricks page 4 SUGGESTION NO 3 PROVIDE A MINIMUM OVERLAP OF 4 INCHES 4 feet max SUGGESTION NO 1 AVOID BOXES The minimum overlapping of the stone should be a minimum of 4 inches. When a group of stones forms a compartment (rectangle or square) it creates joints that should be broken. Adding a different dimension stone usually solves the problem. However, in some projects, such as small columns or pilasters, it is difficult (or impossible) to avoid them. 4 inch AVOID GOOD PRACTICE These are just a few basic rules to help you successfully complete your masonry project. 5 TRICKS (Regarding suggestion NO 2) To avoid long joints, we recommend that you follow these two simple tricks: Trick NO 1 Install a small (S) and a medium (M) size stone beside a large (L) stone. Trick NO 2 For two courses, alternate a sequence of small (S) and medium (M) stones. This technique is particularly efficient to avoid long horizontal joints. 16 SPECIFIC INSTALLATION GUIDE You will notice that the cubes come with all four modules of Lamina stone. All of the stones measure 90 mm (3 1/2 in) in actual depth and mm (3 3/4 in) in actual height for an easy installation. Lamina stone is installed like any other masonry veneer. The units should be installed randomly mm (4 in) Incorrect Correct Each stone has different reliefs. This should be taken into consideration when installing the stone. We suggest the use of mortar in its natural colour so that it can easily blend into the stone colours. We advise using a thin jointing tool to achieve a 6 mm (1/4 in) thick joint. The selection of each stone needs to be as random in length and texture as possible to achieve a more natural look and feel. Avoid creating boxes while installing, by overlapping the stones at least mm (4 in) to obtain the best interlocking results. inner joints mortar joints Identify the mortar joints and the inner joints. The basic principle would be to have the mortar joints and inner joints as similar in thickness as possible. Try to achieve a mortar joint of approximately 6 mm (1/4 in) thick so that you can obtain an equal appearance throughout the stones. Forty percent (40%) of the stones have a textured end to easily achieve corners. They are easily identifiable, always located on one side of a row on the cube. back wall 1/4 in Leave a recessed joint of 6 mm (¼ in) deep compared to the deepest stone, so that all joints appear equal. In order to make sure that all the mortar joints have the same color, tool them when they have the same firmness. It should be noted that the firmer the joints, the darker the colour will be when tooled. Once the installation is complete, clean the wall thoroughly with a stiff brush in order to remove any excess mortar. Remove any residue in the inner joint with a trowel, a thin jointing tool or any other similar tool. Leave wall to dry for approximately 24 hours or until completely dry.
