1 SECTION JOINT SEALANTS PART 1 - GENERAL 1.01 RELATED DOCUMENTS A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 1 Specification Sections, apply to this Section SUMMARY A. This Section includes the following: 1. Preparing substrate surfaces. 2. Sealant and joint backing for Sections referencing this Section for products or installation REFERENCES A. American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM): 1. ASTM C920 - Elastomeric Joint Sealants. 2. ASTM C guide for Use of Joint Sealants. 3. ASTM D Sponge and Expanded Cellular Rubber Products SUBMITTALS A. Product Data: Submit under provisions of Division 1 Section "Submittals". 1. Provide data on sealant and accessories, indicating performance criteria, substrate preparation, limitations and color availability. B. Samples: Submit under provisions of Division 1 Section "Submittals". 1. Submit two samples of sealant, 3/8 x 1-1/2 inches in size, illustrating full range of colors. C. Manufacturer's Instructions: Submit under provisions of Division 1 Section "Submittals". 1. 2 A. Manufacturer: Company specializing in the manufacture of products specified in this Section with minimum 10 years experience. B. Applicator: Company specializing in performing the Work of this Section with minimum five years DELIVERY, STORAGE AND HANDLING A. Deliver, store, protect, and handle products under provisions of Division 1 Section "Material and Equipment". B. Deliver materials to site in original sealed packages, each bearing the manufacturer's name, brand designation, color, expiration date, pot life, curing time, and mixing instructions for multi-component materials. C. Store and handle materials in compliance with manufacturer's instructions to prevent their deterioration or damage due to moisture, high or low temperatures, contaminants, or other causes ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS A. Maintain temperature and humidity recommended by the sealant manufacturer during and after installation. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.01 MANUFACTURERS A. Sealants: SIKA Corporation (Basis-of-Design); or equal. B. Backings (Joint Filler and Joint Backer Rod): Williams Products, Inc. (Basis-of-Design); or equal MATERIALS - GENERAL A. Provide joint sealants, backings, and other related materials that are compatible with one another and with joint substrates. B. 3 A. Elastomeric Sealant: ASTM C920, multi component, Type "M" 2.04 ACCESSORIES (two-part), Grade NS (non-sag), Class 25; Sikaflex-2c NS EZ Mix. A. Joint Filler: ASTM D1056, closed cell expanded polyethylene; Expand-O-Foam 1380 Series. B. Joint Backer Rod: ASTM D1056, round, closed cell expanded polyethylene; Expand-O-Foam Rod. C. Primer: Non-staining type material, recommended by sealant manufacturer to suit application. D. Cleaners for Non-porous Surfaces: Non-corrosive and non-staining type, recommended by sealant and backing manufacturers; compatible with joint forming materials. E. Bond Breaker: Self-adhesive polyethylene tape or other plastic tape recommended by sealant manufacturer to suit application. F. Masking Tape: Non-staining, non-absorbent material compatible PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.01 EXAMINATION with joint sealants and surfaces adjacent to joints. A. Verify site conditions. B. Verify that joint openings are ready to receive Work. C. Verify field measurements are as indicated on Drawings and as recommended by the manufacturer PREPARATION A. Surface Cleaning of Joints: Clean out joints immediately before installing joint sealants to comply with sealant manufacturer's instructions and the following requirements: 1. Remove all foreign material from joint substrates that could interfere with adhesion of joint sealant, including dust, paints, old joint sealants, oil, grease, waterproofing, water repellents, water, surface, dirt and frost. 2. Clean porous joint substrate surfaces by brushing, grinding, blast cleaning, mechanical abrading, or a combination of TVC Project No / Joint Sealants /

4 these methods to produce a clean, sound substrate capable of developing optimum bond with joint sealants. Remove loose particles remaining from above cleaning operations by vacuuming or blowing out joints with oil-free compressed air. 3. Clean non-porous surfaces with cleaners that do not stain, harm substrates, or leave residues capable of interfering with adhesion of joint sealants. B. Joint Priming: Prime joint substrates where recommended by sealant manufacturer to ensure adhesion of sealant to joint substrates. C. Masking Tape: Use masking tape where required to prevent contact of sealant with adjoining surfaces that otherwise would be permanently stained or damaged by such contact or by cleaning methods required to remove sealant smears. Remove tape immediately after tooling without disturbing joint seal INSTALLATION A. Install sealant in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. B. Comply with recommendations of ASTM Cl 193 for use of joint sealants as applicable to materials, applications and conditions indicated. C. Install sealant types at locations indicated in Schedule at end of this Section. D. Measure joint dimensions and size materials to achieve required width/depth ratios. E. Install joint backing where shown on Drawings or where otherwise required. Install with a tool that will assure a uniform depth below the sealant. At no time should that depth be less than inch or exceed M2 inch. Do not use a screwdriver or similar tool that might puncture the backing. F. Install bond breaker behind sealants where joint backings are not used between sealants and back of joints. G. Install sealants to comply with the following at the same time backings are installed. 1. Place sealants so they directly contact and fully wet joint substrates. 2. Completely fill recesses provided or each joint configuration. TVC Project No / Joint Sealants /

5 3. Produce uniform, cross-sectional shapes and depths relative to joint widths that allow optimum sealant movement capability. H. Immediately after sealant application and before skinning or curing begins, tool sealants according to requirements specified below to form smooth, uniform beads of configuration indicated; to eliminate air pockets, and to ensure contact and adhesion of sealant with sides of joint. 1. Remove excess sealants from surfaces adjacent to joint. 2. Use tooling apparatus that are approved by sealant manufacturer and that do not discolor sealants of adjacent surfaces. 3. Provide concave joints, except at glazing products or where otherwise indicated CLEANING A. Clean Work under provision of Division 1 Section "Contract Closeout". B. Clean off excess sealants or sealants smears adjacent to joints as the Work progresses by methods and with cleaning materials approved by manufacturers of joint sealants and products in which joints occur PROTECTION A. Protect sealants during and after curing period from contact with contaminating substances and from damage resulting from construction operations. B. If, despite protection, damage or deterioration occurs, cut out and remove damaged or deteriorated joint sealants immediately so installations with repaired areas are indistinguishable from the original work.
