Special Applications of ETICS Wolfgang Setzler, General Manager Fachverband Wärmedämm- Verbundsysteme e.v. EUMEPS Master Class ETICS March 18th and 19th /03/2013 1
TOPICS 1. Dark without any limitation? Relative brightness attribute of ETICS 2. Eco? Logical! ETICS on timber frame structures 3. New meets old: Doubling of ETICS 4. In black and white: The triumph of grey 2
4 fundamental aspects for developments ZEITGEIST CAPITAL MATERIAL TECHNOLOGY 3
1 Dark without any limitation? Relative brightness attribute of ETICS Zeitgeist: Synthesis of design and thermal insulation 4
1 Relative brightness attribute For a long time there has been technical consensus: Colors on ETICS should have a relative brightness attribute > 20 %. 5
1 Relative brightness attribute Recently there is a strongly increasing demand of architects for using dark colors. 6
1 Relative brightness attribute Three different approaches when using dark colors on ETICS: Application of a second reinforcement layer Use of a carbon fiber reinforced, high elastic finishing layer Source: Brillux Quelle: Caparol 7
1 Relative brightness attribute Use of especially developed infrared reflecting pigments with less heat absorption helping to reduce the TSR value Source: Brillux TSR value - Total Solar Reflectance: share of total solar reflectance of a paint Source: Sto AG 8
1 Relative brightness attribute If design requires a relative brightness attribute lower than 20 %: strictly follow the application rules of the system holder! Otherwise: risk of deformation of insulation panels and stress cracks. 9
1 Relative brightness attribute Most critical: west-facing facades It is not the heating of the wall itself causing problems, but the sudden cooling down in the evening! Wall temperature Wall temperatures vary East black dark colors bright colors South white hours Development of surface temperatures of external walls by orientation under direct summer sunlight influence (25 cm gas concrete, bright paint). hours Development of surface temperatures of westoriented walls by color during summer sunlight. 10
1 Relative brightness attribute Especially sudden changes in the shade of the final layer cause stress on the entire ETIC system at junctions. 11
1 Relative brightness attribute The quality of both the application and the system are fundamental. Notice: Cheap may become very expensive in the end! 12
2 Eco? Logical! ETICS on timber frame structures Zeitgeist: Ecology / systainability / renewable raw materials 13
2 ETICS on timber frame structures The use of timber for construction reflects the increasing demand for sustainable solutions. 14
12 ETICS on timber frame structures Estimated development of structural designs within the next 5 years (percentage of architects per country using the structural design mentioned) Structural design Prefabricated concrete elements In-situ concrete less more less more less more less more less more less more Cavity walls Timber frame structure Metal frame structure Concrete bricks Source: Arch-Vision
12 ETICS on timber frame structures Share of timber frame constructions permitted for housebuilding in Germany in per cent 16 15, ,4 14, ,
12 ETICS on timber frame structures Advantages of timber frame construction Ecological construction using renewable resources Reduced construction period total structural work can be done within factory buildings Less humidity in the construction compared to traditional solid construction methods Increasing living space thanks to thinner wall construction 17
12 ETICS on timber frame structures Example for increasing living space objective: Achieve U value of about 0.15 W/(m 2 K) Wall thickness timber frame structure plus ETICS with wood fiber insulation board 29 cm Wall thickness using brick work up to 53 cm With a layout of 12 m x 8 m = increase of living space of about 8.82 m 2 18
12 ETICS on timber frame structures Various designs using a variety of insulation materials and final layers Source: Inthermo Source: Sto AG Source: Inthermo Source: Gutex 19
12 ETICS on timber frame structures Timber as a natural construction material is extremely sensitive in terms of humidity. Therefore an ETICS has to be absolutely resistant against driving rain, especially at any joint. Driving rain 20
3 New meets old: Doubling of ETICS Zeitgeist: Paradigm shift regarding the lifecycle of ETIC systems 21
3 Doubling of ETICS ETIC systems last longer than originally expected: The life-cycle of an ETICS is equal to the one of solid brickwork with a render system if the ETICS is executed, maintained and renovated properly. Inquiry report of Fraunhofer Institute for building physics about long-term experience with ETICS 22
3 Doubling of ETICS 23
3 Doubling of ETICS Even if - after years of use - an ETICS has to comply with new thermal regulation it will not necessarily lead to demolition and hazardous waste deposit. 24
31 Doubling of ETICS Trash mountains as high as the Alps? The clear answer is: No! Because according to experience existing systems will be doubled. 25
3 Doubling of ETICS How much insulation waste or recycling material is caused in reality by deconstruction? The waste ratio caused by demolition or deconstruction is lower than 1 per mille. The waste ratio caused by clippings during the execution of an ETICS is according to a market survey done recently about 3 7 per cent. 26
3 Doubling of ETICS Doubling can be used according to German building regulation for Buildings having an existing ETIC system with sufficient stability; Existing systems made from EPS, mineral wool or mineral wool lamella insulation boards; Existing systems with insulation boards originally mounted by bonding with or without additional mechanical fixings. 27
3 Doubling of ETICS The insulation thickness of the resulting total system (old + new) is limited to 200 mm except if both systems use EPS boards or if the new system uses EPS and will be applied to an old ETICS with wood wool insulation boards. Insulation product of the new system EPS boards Insulation product of the old system MW boards or MW lamella WW boards EPS boards 400 mm 200 mm 400 mm MW boards or MW lamella 200 mm 200 mm 200 mm 28
3 Doubling of ETICS Detailed analysis of existing wall construction and old ETIC system, e. g. by partial opening of the existing system at representative areas. 29
3 Doubling of ETICS Extension of plate coverings, window sills, downspouts etc. according to the new total thickness of the resulting ETICS. 30
3 Doubling of ETICS On occasion the old system has to be prepared prior to the installation of the new system e. g. mechanical fixing of the existing insulation layer or replacement of demolished insulation boards. Joints of the insulation boards of the new system should mismatch joints of the old system. old ETICS new ETICS 31
3 Doubling of ETICS Doubling is useful in case of Existing thermal insulation does no longer meet stateof-the-art requirements Joints of insulation boards or anchor plates remain permanently visible Significant heat losses caused by thermal bridges Increasing impact resistance requirements due to new intended use of buildings Large-scale renovation e. g. due to cracks, blisters or spallings 32
4 In black and white: The triumph of grey Zeitgeist: Resource efficiency / application efficiency / energy efficiency 33
4 The triumph of grey Advantages of grey EPS boards: Resource efficiency as less input is required Improved handling due to reduced weight and lamda values equal to or even better than white EPS Easier to cut Non-reflecting Easier to grind 34
4 The triumph of grey The greatest advantage however: recognized as solid construction material. 35
4 The triumph of grey If shade has to be provided during the application of boards please depends on the application rules of the system holder. These rules might be different. Some say - providing shade is mandatory; - providing shade is voluntary; - nothing at all. Notice: Joints appear wider when using grey EPS compared to white EPS. 36
4 The triumph of grey Bold promotors of grey EPS predict that white EPS will be replaced completely. 37
2 1 Source: Sto Source: alsecco 4 3 Source: fotolia Source: sunpor 38
Let s conclude: The success of ETIC systems depends on high-quality application in accordance with system loyalty! 39
