7 No. A PREFACE The revision of A.S. No. A , was undertaken in response to a request from the Conference of State Road Authorities of Australia for the extension of the specification to include two classes of pipes having strengths in excess of the strength specified for Class X pipes. Provision has now been made for two additional classes of pipes designated Class Y and Class Z. The specified cracking strengths are, respectively, 50 per cent and 0 per cent higher than the strength specified for Class X pipes. The ultimate strength of the pipes is 50 per cent higher than the relevant specified cracking strength. No substantial changes were made in the technical requirements of the specification, but the method for determining the water absorption was replaced after investigations had shown that the method gave results which were not sufficiently accurate or reproducible for referee purposes. An adaptation of an A.S.T.M. test has been included and the permissible limits for absorption have been adjusted to allow for the change in the method of test. The porosity test was omitted because experience had shown that the hydrostatic pressure test and the absorption test give sufficient information concerning the porosity of the pipes. It is the usual practice to produce Class Y and Class Z pipes in the moulds normally used for the production of Class X pipes, and any necessary thickening of the walls of Class Y and Class Z pipes is achieved at the expense of the internal diameter of the pipe. A table has therefore been included in Appendix E to give guidance concerning the nominal and actual internal diameters of pipes as manufactured. The details of flexible joints or rubber joint rings are not laid down because the Committee considered that the manufacturer should be allowed freedom of ingenuity in the design and development of these details. The specification provides however for the purchaser to approve the design of the flexible joint or rubber joint ring which the manufacturer proposes to supply. The recommendations concerning pipe laying practice included as Appendix A in A.S. No. A have been omitted from this revision because they are to be included in a separate code dealing with the laying of pipes.

9 No. A STANDARDS ASSOCIATION OF AUSTRALIA AUSTRALIAN STANDARD SPECIFICATION FOR PRECAST CONCRETE DRAINAGE PIPES SCOPE. This specification applies to precast iinreinforced and reinforced circular pipes manufactured from Portland cement concrete and intended for the conveyance, not under internal pressure, of sewage and storm water. CLASSES OF PIPE. The classes of pipes covered by this specification are as follows: Class C. Class S. Class X. Class Y. Class Z. Unreinforced. Standard Reinforced. Extra Strength Reinforced. Special Strength Reinforced. Special Strength Reinforced. MATERIALS. The materials used in the manufacture of pipes shall comply with the following specifications or requirements as appropriate: Portland Cement: A.S. No. A.2, Portland Cement. Steel Reinforcement: (i) Rolled Steel Bars and Hard Drawn Steel Wire: A.S. No. A.81, Rolled Steel Bars and Hard Drawn Sel Wire for Concrete Reinforcement. Steel Fabric: A.S. No. A.84, Steel Fabric for Concrete Reinforcetnent. Annealed Steel Wire shall have an ultimate tensile strength of not less than 20 tons per square inch and an elongation of not less rhn 30 per cent on two inches. NOTE : One tensile test shall be made on a representative sample from every 5 tons of wire or part thereof. Should the test fail, then two additional samples shall be tested, and should either of these samples fail the material represented by the samples may be rejected. Aggregates: A.S. No. A.77, Dense Aggregates for Concrete. Water: shall, be clean and free from injurious amounts of oil, acid, alkali, organic material or other deleterious substances.
