Living on the edge 20 Australian Standards for the design and construction of handrails and balustrades
181 children under the age of five in QLD were reported to have fallen from a balcony between 1998 and
Balustrades can give a great look to any property, but without following the proper safety requirements they could cause serious injuries from falls. Whether you re working with steel, glass or wood, Australian Standards can help. Which Standards do I need? For the first time we ve brought together 20 Australian Standards for the design and construction of handrails and balustrades in one brochure. It includes publications on: > Design loads > Glass > Access & mobility > Structures (steel, stainless steel, timber & aluminium) > Safety barriers for swimming pools > Welding and more! With many Standards referenced in the Building Code of Australia (BCA), keeping in line with legislation has never been so easy. Make sure all balcony balustrades and handrails are in line with Australian Standards
Australian Standards For all building classes, handrails and balustrades are required to comply with the Building Code of Australia (BCA) to ensure safety. The following Australian Standards are referenced in the BCA, so compliance is essential. Loads These Standards can help you ensure that a balustrade or barrier is structurally adequate to withstand a number of actions, including wind. They include procedures and guidelines for limit states design, actions, methods of analysis, robustness and confirmation of design. > AS/NZS :2002, Structural design actions General principles > AS/NZS :2002, Structural design actions Permanent, imposed and other actions > AS/NZS :2002, Structural design actions Wind actions Glass Glass balustrades have become very popular in both residential and commercial premises. AS 1288, Glass in buildings, outlines the design and selection of glass for a variety of balustrade types and applications. It s accompanied by a practical guide that s over 200 pages long and details a variety of tables for glass, under different wind loadings. > AS , Glass in buildings Selection and installation > AS 1288 Supp , Glass in buildings Selection and installation (Supplement to AS ) Both Standard and Supplement are available as a Set with great savings (REF: AS 1288 Set 2006). Formats include Hardcopy, PDF and CD. There s also an AS 1288 PLUS CD Set, which includes AS 1288 in a hardcopy PLUS you get both the Standard and Supplement on CD (REF: AS 1288 Plus (CD) Set 2006).
referenced in the building code of australia (BCA) Access & mobility People have a right to live independently. The AS 1428, Design for access and mobility series provides the minimum design requirements of buildings for people with disabilities. It provides guidelines for access ways, sanitary facilities, ramps and handrails. > AS , Design for access and mobility General requirements for access New building work > AS , Design for access and mobility Enhanced and additional requirements Buildings and facilities > AS , Design for access and mobility Requirements for children and adolescents with physical disabilities Only Part 1 is referenced in the BCA This Series also includes AS/NZS :2002, Tactile indicators, to assist people who have a vision impairment. All 4 parts are available as a discounted Set in PDF, Hardcopy or CD formats. Pools > AS , Swimming pool safety Safety barriers for swimming pools Appropriate barriers can reduce the risks associated with accidents, drowning and falls. AS covers the design, construction and performance of various barriers to help safe-guard your pool.
more BCA referenced Standards From sleek and modern glass to aluminium, steel and timber, Australian Standards specialise in the design and construction of a variety of materials used for balustrading. Aluminium > AS/NZS :1997, Aluminium structures Limit state design This Standard specifies requirements for the design of aluminium building type structural load-carrying members and elements using the limit state design criteria (LSD). Timber > AS , Timber structures Design methods Provides designers and manufacturers of timber structures with limit state design methods, design data and testing procedures. Steel > AS , Steel structures Sets out minimum requirements for the design, fabrication, erection, and modification of steelwork in structures in accordance with the limit states design method. > AS/NZS 4600:2005, Cold-formed steel structures Provides designers of cold-formed steel structures with specifications for cold-formed steel structural members used for load-carrying purposes in buildings and other structures. Don t get fenced in Make sure your projects comply with the BCA today!

other important publications Welding Standards Every welder must ensure that safety precautions are followed before welding takes place. The following welding Standards can help qualify welding procedures, ensure safety, quality and consistency. > AS/ZNS :2004, Structural steel welding Welding of steel structures > AS/NZS :1994, Structural steel welding Welding stainless steels for structural purposes > AS/NZS 1665:2004, Welding of aluminium structures Stainless Steel > AS/NZS 4673:2001, Cold-formed stainless steel structures Stainless steel is widely used in the construction industry. It s more cost efficient, flexible and lighter weight, so handling of materials is easier and reduces construction time. This Standard sets out minimum requirements for the design of stainless steel structural members coldformed to shape from annealed or temper-rolled sheet, strip, plate or flat bar stainless steels. Walking tracks > AS , Walking tracks Infrastructure design Without safety barriers, walking trails can present serious safety risks. AS specifies design methods and loads for use in the structural design of walking tracks. It covers boardwalks, galleries, pedestrian bridges (including wire crossings), platforms (for viewing), ladders, stairways, stiles and barriers. Safe house design > AS , Guidelines for safe housing design Many fall injuries can happen at home, especially to the very young, elderly or people with disabilities. It s important to have the right measures in place when designing your home. AS 4226 can reduce the risks associated with any building element or fitting. This includes handrails and balustrades. Escalators & moving walks > AS , Lifts, escalators and moving walks Escalators and moving walks It s essential that lifts, escalators and moving walks are properly installed, maintained and repaired to help minimise health and safety risks. This Standard sets out requirements for electric escalators and moving walks for carrying passengers.
