3 1. Project History 1.1 Kitchen fire The Gasthof Hirsch is a restaurant located in the beautiful wine region near Stuttgart in Germany. Unfortunately, it has been badly damaged due to a fire caused by an electrical failure. The kitchen including an existing old Sika resin floor was badly damaged. Therefore, the existing floor needed to be removed before applying the Sikafloor Pronto System. 3/9

4 2. Field Applications and Characteristics 1.2 Site and surface preparation Special precautions had to be taken for the use of the Sikafloor Pronto System in the kitchen as an indoor application. The kitchen area has been closed off with some polyethylene sheets in order to avoid dusting of adjacent areas and to keep people from accidentally entering the work area. Sufficient ventilation has been provided in order to control the MAC of max. 50 ppm (Maximal Allowable Concentration at a workplace). MAC Maximum Allowable Concentration at workplace: The Maximum Allowable Concentration of a working substance in the form of gas, vapour or suspended matter in the atmosphere at the workplace which according to the state of the art does not generally harm the health of workers or cause them to suffer unreasonable stress, even with repeated and long-term exposure,normally for 8 hours but limited to a weekly working time of 40 hours (DFG definition). For MMA: 50 ppm Odour threshold The concentration of a substance in the atmosphere at which it is perceived. For MMA: 0.5 ppm Furthermore, all ignition sources have been checked to avoid accidents with the highly flammable polymethylmethacrylate. Danger symbols for MMA: 4/9

5 2.2 System selection Downtime in a busy restaurant, such as this one is critical. The refurbishment included the painting of the walls, a new ceiling and the installation of new kitchen equipment. Therefore, only the weekend was available in order to prepare the substrate and apply the full Sikafloor Pronto System before the kitchen would go back into service on a Monday morning. In this case, the kitchen floor was not considered a wet floor, which means the surface wouldn t be exposed to water more than 25% of the time. Therefore, the owner decided to use the standard Sikafloor-16 Pronto as a clear sealer onto a coloured quartz sand. Sikafloor-14 Pronto has been used as a base coat over the whole area broadcast to excess with coloured quartz sand mm. The aggregate size has been selected to find a balance between slip resistance and cleanability. System No.1: Broadcast system ca. 3-4 mm for dry areas Primer: Base coat: Broadcast: Seal coat 1 x Sikafloor -13 Pronto 1 x Sikafloor -14 Pronto Quartz sand ( mm or mm), coloured quartz sand ( mm or mm) or Sikafloor-Colorchips 1-2 x Sikafloor -16 Pronto However, the kitchen floor has got a number of drainage channels and gullies over a relatively small area. Therefore, it was necessary to improve the connection between the details and the resin floor in order to improve the waterproofing capabilities during the use of hot water and therefore expansion of the drainage channels. This was achieved by saw cutting alongside the channels and gullies in order to trowel the flexible Sikafloor-15 Pronto into the grove. 5/9

6 2.3 Application Note: The curing time of Sikafloor Pronto is very much dependent on the temperature. 6/9

7 After the preparation of the floor all exposed details, such as drainage channels have been taped off and the area has been primed using Sikafloor-13 Pronto. Again, all exposed details have been taped off before saw cutting and applying Sikafloor-15 Pronto into the groves with a trowel. After the appropriate curing time of Sikafloor-15 Pronto, a base coat of Sikafloor-14 Pronto has been applied over the whole area at an average consumption of 3.5kg/m². Immediately afterwards broadcast Sikafloor-14 Pronto to excess using coloured quartz sand mm. Remove all lose aggregate before applying Sikafloor-16 Pronto as a clear sealer. 7/9

8 3. Summary 3.1 Advantages The advantages of the Sikafloor Pronto System made this application a real success. The fast curing properties even at low temperatures made it possible to carry out the application in one day during the winter. The robust Sikafloor-16 Pronto seal coat is easy to clean and used with a coloured quartz mm aggregate offers slip resistance with a high aesthetically finish. The very high abrasion resistance of the seal coat makes it also a long lasting system. The disadvantages, such as the strong odour was controlled by using protection and allowing for sufficient ventilation. 8/9
