2 Introduction. Gyprock plasterboard and CSR Fibre Cement Wallboard can be used with masonry walls for effective fire and acoustic solutions. These linings can eliminate the need for render, increase the fire rating of the masonry, or provide an acoustic performance to meet sound transmission and sound impact ratings. Systems incorporating masonry and an insulated cavity are generally used where there is a requirement for excellent acoustic performance and discontinuous construction. The provision of a cavity also allows the inclusion of services such as water pipes. Gyprock plasterboard may be directly applied to the masonry substrate, screw fixed to metal furring channels that are fixed to the masonry, or may be fixed to separate stud framing. CSR Fibre Cement Wallboard may be fixed to furring channels or studs. Systems in this section are suitable for a wide range of masonry products. These are typically clay and concrete blocks, autoclaved aerated concrete blocks and panels, and may include cast concrete elements. Minimum performance conditions apply to the substrates to achieve the system performance values, and these are stated in the system specifications. Specific fixing details apply to each type of substrate. These wall systems are generally used in internal applications in commercial, industrial, institutional, domestic and high-rise domestic construction, or in the renovation of older buildings. A number of systems for external masonry veneer walls can be found in Section B and Section C. Design Considerations. STRUCTURAL PERFORMANCE. All wall elements must be designed for the applied loads. Vertical loads may be supported by the masonry element of the wall or by the stud framing. Lateral loads should be considered separately for framed and masonry parts of a wall. To achieve the specified sound performance, ties from masonry to the stud framing must not be used. Framed Wall Elements. Guidance is given in Tables D2, D3, & D4 for the selection of Rondo studs and other specific sections in non-loadbearing internal walls only, for 0.25kPa and 0.35kPa. For other brand of studs, studs that are required to be loadbearing, and studs subject to high lateral pressures, contact the manufacturer for design information. Maximum spans for Rondo furring channels are given in Table D1. Tall multi-residential buildings often have operable doors and windows, resulting in internal walls being subject to wind pressure. In these cases, walls must be designed for the appropriate loads. Stud frames that are part of a masonry wall system may be load bearing. A qualified structural engineer must complete the structural design of loadbearing wall systems. Walls with shelving attached are considered loadbearing. Further information on the design of stud walls is given in Section B. Walls lined with GYPROCK plasterboard designed as loadbearing, and non-loadbearing walls selected from Tables D2-D4, meet the requirements of Specification C1.8 Clause 3.4 Walls generally. TABLE D1. 4 Wall Elements. All brick and block wall elements are to be designed in accordance with AS3700 Structures. walls must be designed to AS3600, Structures, and CSR Hebel Powerpanel must be designed in accordance with CSR Hebel literature. FIRE RESISTANCE. For systems without a stated Fire Resistance Level (FRL), the system FRL is equal to the FRL of the masonry wall element. The FRL of masonry walls is dependant on the height and width of the wall; contact the manufacturer for more information. To achieve the required fire performance of a wall, it is essential that installation is in accordance with the masonry manufacturer s details and relevant installation standards. This should include fire sealing at the wall head and perimeters, and filling of mortar joints. All gaps and penetrations should be effectively fire sealed. Vermiculite plaster has no capacity to accommodate building movement and may not be suitable for use as a general purpose fire rated caulking. Its use is specified in some wall/ceiling junctions. Refer to the Gyprock Ceiling Systems Installation Guide, GYP570. In systems with Gyprock Fyrchek plasterboard, framing, jointing and fire sealing must be in accordance with Section B of this manual. FYRCHEK plasterboard must be fully screw fixed, and the use of Gyprock Acrylic Stud Adhesive is not permitted. PERFORMANCE. The acoustic performance of some systems is dependant on a minimum Rw of the masonry wall element. This is to be the tested performance of the masonry without render or sheet linings, and must be verified by the masonry unit manufacturer. Installation of the masonry element of the wall must be in accordance with the manufacturer s details for the tested product. Systems that meet the requirements for discontinuous construction are noted in the system specifications. These have studs that are separated from the masonry by at least 12mm. The plasterboard lining on the studs (the wall leaf) therefore has a separation of at least 12mm plus the depth of the stud, which exceeds the minimum of 20mm. Systems that use only resilient mounts or fixing clips with furring channels to create a cavity, do not meet the requirements of discontinuous construction. The acoustic performance of wall systems may be affected by: Sound flanking. The effectiveness of workmanship and caulking. The presence and treatment of penetrations. The inclusion of structural elements and bridging items. Reducing the stated or implied cavity sizes. The acoustic performance of wall systems will not be affected by: The addition of Gyprock plasterboard or CSR Fibre Cement linings. The use of deeper studs or larger cavities. The use of timber studs of at least equal depth in lieu of steel studs. Refer to Section A for detailed information. Perimeter Sealing. To attain the stated Rw in systems that do not rely on plasterboard for the fire rating, use CSR Gyprock Wet Area Acrylic Sealant, CSR Gyprock Fire Mastic or other tested acoustic rated material of equivalent or better performance. Installation. MASONRY. All brick and block walls are to be installed in accordance with AS3700 Structures. CSR Hebel Powerpanel must be installed in accordance with CSR Hebel literature. FRAMING. For detailed information on wall junctions, intersections, frame attachments and penetrations, refer to Section Z of this manual. Refer to manual GYP544, Steel Frame Wall Systems Installation Guide for detailed information on installation of stud framing. WALLBOARD & PLASTERBOARD FIXING. Walls may be built to achieve a particular Level of Finish as defined in AS/NZS The Level of Finish specified can have requirements for frame alignment, jointing, back blocking methods and sheet orientation. CSR Fibre Cement Wallboard and Gyprock plasterboard may be installed vertically or horizontally, although for some Levels of Finish horizontal sheeting must be used. D4. The Red Book
5 Except for fire grade plasterboard, fixing to framing may be fastener only or combination fastener/adhesive. Plasterboard fixed direct to masonry may be adhesive daub fixed as shown in installation diagram FIG D4, full bed adhesive fixed, or mechanically fixed. JOINTING & FINISHING. Refer to the Gyprock Residential Installation Guide, GYP547 and CSR Fibre Cement Wet Area Lining Systems, FC101 for detailed jointing and finishing information. It should be noted that: Multi-layered systems only require jointing and finishing of the outer layer. It is a requirement of the that a water resistant taping compound, such as CSR Gyprock & Fibre Cement Wet Area Base Coat, be used at vertical wall junctions (corners), and horizontal and vertical joints within wet areas such as showers. CONTROL JOINTS. Control joints must be installed to allow for structural movement. Allowance for movement must be made through the masonry and any direct fixed lining, and through framed wall elements. Refer to Section Z of this manual for details. Control joints must be installed at all construction joints in the building, and at the following locations: For masonry with any direct fixed lining or lining fixed to furring channels: Refer to masonry manufacturer. At 12m maximum centres. At change of substrate material. For stud framed wall elements: Non-tiled internal walls with fibre cement outer layer: at 7.2m maximum centres. Tiled internal walls with fibre cement outer layer: at 4.2m maximum centres. Walls with plasterboard outer layer: at 12m maximum centres. Components. LINING & FIXING MATERIALS. Refer to Section A of this manual for detailed information on CSR Gyprock and Fibre Cement lining products, masonry adhesive, and for fastener specifications for fixing GYPROCK plasterboard to steel studs and furring channel. CSR Gyprock Adhesive is a fast and convenient method of fixing GYPROCK plasterboard systems to masonry substrates. CSR Gyprock Acrylic Stud Adhesive is used for fixing non fire grade linings to framing. FRAMING. CSR Gyprock and CSR Fibre Cement recommend steel components manufactured by Rondo Building Services Pty Ltd. Additional information on the steel components can be obtained from the Rondo Building Services Pty Ltd, telephone For information on Lysaght, Stramit or UniSpan top hat sections, please refer to the appropriate component manufacturer, and the Gyprock Steel Frame Wall Systems Installation Guide, GYP544.
