3 International Building Code Monday Building Areas, Mixed Occupancies & Fire/Special Uses This class provides a comprehensive discussion of the major compartmentalization concepts of the IBC, focusing on those requirements that deal with building size, sprinkler options and mixed-used buildings. Fire-resistance related construction is also addressed. This class will include topics on allowable areas, area increases, unlimited area buildings, fire area concepts and construction, incidental/accessory use areas and separated/non-separated uses. INTERMEDIATE LEVEL. Students should bring their 2015 IBC. Instructor: Steve Thomas-Colorado Code Consulting, LLC. Tuesday- AM Fire Resistance Related Wall Construction Chapter 7, Fire and Smoke Protection. This class will go over when and where fire walls are required and what the difference is between fire walls, fire barriers and fire partitions. Tuesday PM Means of Egress Means of Egress, Chapter 10 between cover and occupant load, number of exits required, travel distance, common path of egress travel, rating of corridors, stairways and exit passageways where applicable. 4 International Residential Code Monday- AM Inspecting Common Residential Framing Construction This course will provide information on how to conduct proper framing inspections based on the 2015 International Residential Code. Topics will include framing details for wall, rafter, ceiling and floor joists. Verify allowable joist and rafter spans, and what to look for when performing wall bracing inspections for one- and two-family dwellings. Instructor: Wayne Carlisle- Carlisle Code Consulting Monday- PM Inspecting Common Residential Mechanical Installations Basic course covering the most common occurrences of improper or inadequate mechanical installation found during inspections, including heating and cooling equipment, ductwork and condensate lines. Course will include discussion of solutions to some of the most common installation errors. Instructor: Sam Dardano- City of Boulder-Retired Tuesday- Significant Changes and Chapter 3 The 2015 International Residential Code Significant Changes seminar provides a basic understanding of the changes occurring between the 2012 and the 2015 IRC (International Residential Code). Wednesday-AM Residential Fire Separation Townhouse and Duplexes An in-depth look at required construction methods for both Two-Family dwelling and Townhouse fire separation walls, floor-ceiling assembles. Wednesday-PM Engineered Wood Products This course will review the ASTM standards for building materials and how to recognize the difference between perception and the actual test. Instructor: Sam Dardano- City of Boulder-Retired Wednesday-PM 2015 IBC (International Building Code) Fire Resistance Related Wall Construction This course focuses on elements of buildings that are required to be fire resistance related due to provisions of the code. Applicable to all occupancies and construction types, topics, will include fire resistance rated construction, shaft enclosures, fire doors, fire windows, penetration and joints, fire dampers, smoke dampers, fire blocking and draft stopping. The way we communicate either creates an open dialog with those to whom we are speaking or it creates barriers and walls. As code enforcement professionals is imperative that we have the skills to maneuver through the land mines when communicating with those under enforcement of the laws in our jurisdictions. Through effective conscious and subconscious communication styles we can create a positive outcome in a potentially negative or hostile situation. 9 Plumbing Re-Certification Wednesday Re-Certification for Plumbing Inspectors Class Mandated continuing education course for licensed Plumbing Inspectors and Code Enforcement Officers whose licenses expire on January 21, Overview of the Texas Plumbing Licensing Law and Board Rules. Provides participants with the continuing education units required for plumbing license renewal. Approved by the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners for the 2017 and part of 2018 continuing education year (Includes minimum of 1 hour Legal Updates). 10 Plan Review Monday IRC (International Residential Code) Chapter 3 for Plan Review This class will start with design criteria, end with mezzanines and cover everything else in chapter 3 of the 2015 IRC. How much detail is needed on a set of construction plans? Can a single family dwelling be built without any windows? Can a single family dwelling be built with all windows? What wall coverings are required in the IRC? These and many other chapter 3 mysteries will be discovered and discussed in detail. Come and join us for some fun! Tuesday-AM Commercial Mechanical Plan Review Basic Mechanical plan review to cover requirements of submittal including engineering seals, energy code, supply/return ductwork, new/existing equipment, and location of rooftop units, commercial kitchen requirements and smoke detection systems. Instructor: Jerry Flanik- Associated Consulting Solutions, LLC Tuesday-PM Commercial Energy Plan Review Plans Examiners will learn how to assess Energy Code compliance on non-standard projects involving alternations and additions to existing commercial spaces. Attendees will learn how to guide business owners and inexperienced contractors on the use of the Prescriptive compliance approach as well as COMcheck submittals for accuracy. 11 INSTRUCTOR PROFILES Wayne Carlisle Matt Christianson Sam Dardano Former Building Official for the City of Benbrook; Certified ICC Building Inspector, Certified ICC International Residential Code Inspector, Certified ICC Residential Energy Inspector/Plans Examiner, and a State of Texas Licensed Plumbing Inspector. Registered code Enforcement Officer with the State of Texas and has worked in the code enforcement field for 20 years as a field investigator and manager in the City of Austin overseeing training and special operations. He is a member of CEAT and serves on the Board of Directors of the Code Standards Institute of Texas, a non-profit organization dedicated to providing the educational needs of code enforcement officers in Texas. 50 years experience in HVAC; teaches Mechanical Code Classes for Redstone College, serves as technical consultant to county and city agencies for Mechanical/Fuel-Gas codes; mechanical Plan Reviewers for ICC. Thomas Domitrovich Thomas is a registered PE. A national application engineer with Eaton Corporation in Pittsburgh, PA. He has more than 20 years of experience as an electrical engineer and is a LEED Accredited Professional. Thomas is active in various trade organizations on levels with the Independent Electrical Contractors (IEC), International Association of Electrical Inspectors (IAEI), Institute of Electrical and Electronic Contractors (IEEE), National Electrical Manufacturer s Association (NEMA) and the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). Thomas is involved with, and chairs various committees for NEMA and IEEE and is an alternate member on NFPA 73. He is very active in the state- by-state adoption process of NFPA 70 working closely with review committees and other key organizations. Robert Doran Mark Dunn Master plumber for nearly 30 years began his teaching career with Texas A&M University Engineering Extension Service at the beginning of the CPE program in 1994, active member of ASPE DFW Chapter, and donates his time to many different types of training towards the Health and Safety of the state; personally contributed in the development of all of the training manuals, including writing for the CPE books, and designing of power point presentations to maximize the time-to-learn ratio to insure the best possible score on all certification tests; currently involved with the Texas Residential Fire Sprinkler Coalition in demonstrating the importance of sprinkler system in the home. Mark is the Chief Plumbing, Gas and Mechanical Inspector for the City of Hoover in Alabama where he has been employed for 22 years. Before employment with the City of Hoover, Mark was a member of the Plumbers and Steamfitters Local #91 in Birmingham, Alabama which he joined in He has a State of Alabama Master Plumbing and Gas Fitters certification along with Plumbing, Mechanical and Gas ICC Certifications. (Certifications are: Alabama Certificate for Master Plumber and Gas Fitter. ICC Certified Plumbing Inspector, Certified Plumbing Plans Examiner, Certified Mechanical Inspector, Certified Mechanical Plans Examiner). Mr. Dunn has been an Instructor for the Alabama Association of Plumbing, Gas and Mechanical Inspectors for several years and has also served on ICC Plumbing Code Committees. He also teaches as an ICC instructor as well as being involved in assisting in the writing of code training materials for the ICC.
12 INSTRUCTOR PROFILES Alan Jumper Shauna Mozingo Alan is a Regional Field Technical Manager for Louisiana-Pacific with responsibilities for the central time zone of the continental United States, Canada, and Central America. He has 20+ years of experience in the building materials industry, and is a Certified HERS Rater, ASTM Member, and has provided AIA CEUs since Alan s personal goal is to take complex testing and apply it to real world installations in a manner that is enjoyable to construction professionals. Building Inspector, Plans Analyst and Code Trainer for Colorado Code Consulting; past President of the Colorado Chapter of ICC and is active on the Chapter s Code Development and Education Committees; serves on ICC s Commercial Energy Code Development Committee as well as their Code Correlation Committee; researches on how buildings use energy and easier ways to enforce the codes. Janet Spugnardi, J.D. She has over 12 years of experience serving as legal counsel for cities in the State of Texas, with a primary emphasis on code enforcement issues; joined the City Attorney s Office of Irving, where she handles various transactional, litigation, and appellate matters for the City and serves as the staff attorney for both the Building and Standards Commission and the Planning and Zoning Commission,; worked in private practice and a the City of Dallas, where she handled extensive litigation involving code ordinance, land use and zoning, criminal nuisance abatement, and inverse condemnation; received the Daniel J. Curtin Young Public Lawyer of the Year award from the International Municipal Lawyers Association. Gil Rossmiller Colorado Code Consulting; Retired. Active in building and energy code development; over 30 years in construction industry; hands on perspective to building code compliance. Steve Thomas Steve Van Note William (Bill) Viars President of Colorado Code Consulting, LLC; currently on the ICC Means of Egress Code Development Committee. Steve Van Note is the Managing Director of Product Development for the International Code Council (ICC), where he is responsible for developing technical resource materials in support of the International Codes. His role also includes the management, review, and technical editing of publications developed by ICC staff members and other expert authors. In addition, Steve develops and presents code seminars nationally. He has over 40 years of experience in the construction and building code arena. Prior to joining ICC in 2006, Steve was building official for Linn County, Iowa. Prior to his 15 years at Linn County, he was a carpenter and construction project manager for residential, commercial, and industrial buildings. A certified building official and plans examiner, Steve also holds certifications in several inspection categories. The Education and Training Manager for the Southeast with Simpson Strong-Tie Company, where he has been employed for over 20 years; responsible for developing, maintaining, and delivering educational content at workshops, webinars, and various other format; also provides technical support to customers and field representatives alike on topics such as building codes, product usage, and product testing; works with many organizations including VBCOA, TBOA, BOAF, FBPE, ICC, ASHL, and BPI to provide continuing education programs across the country.
