Building pit District adjacent to St.Katharinenkirche Hamburg, Germany Implenia Spezialtiefbau GmbH Infrastructure - Northern Branch Heidenkampsweg 81 D Hamburg GERMANY T F hamburg.spezialtiefbau@implenia.com

Contract Value (net): 6,0 million EURO (total contract) 3,3 million EURO (Implenia Spezialtiefbau GmbH share) Construction Period: 09/ /2012 Client: Hochtief Projektentwicklung GmbH Execution: JV Building pit District adjacent to St. Katharinenkirche Implenia Spezialtiefbau GmbH, Northern Branch (Technical direction) Fredrich Spezialtiefbau GmbH (Commercial direction) Brauckmann & Damm GmbH & Co. KG Services: Turnkey trough building pit In-situ concrete diaphragm wall In-situ concrete displacement bored piles Secant bored pile wall Grouted anchors Explosive ordnance exploration Overdrilling of a suspected weapons point Earthworks, demolition, disposal Dewatering Diaphragm wall grab

The district adjacent to St. Katharinenkirche is undergoing redevelopment in Hamburg old town. To this end services to produce the building pit and pile foundation are to be performed. The planned building was built on an approx. 8,000 m² plot between the streets "Willy-Brandt.Straße", "Neue Gröninger Straße" and "Grimm", and St. Katharinenkirche in the south. Approx. 24,900 m³ soil of soil categories 3-5 and approx. 10,700 m³ of soil category 2 were to be excavated, approx. 350 m building pit supporting system and approx. 500 in-situ concrete displacement bored piles were to be produced. Building pit supporting system In order to build the basement, due to lack of space the plot edge was secured on the construction side with the aid of a one-time rear-anchored (or inclined inwards to the floor) braced in-situ concrete diaphragm wall, D = 60 cm, and a bored pile wall, D = 90 cm. Dewatering In the reach of the historical St. Katharinenkirche structure no dewatering measures could be executed in order to influence the surrounding water level within the organic soft layers. For this reason the building pit enclosure was executed in the form of a watertight trough. The bottom horizontal closure of the building pit trough is formed by the organic soft layers. Dependent on the tide-influenced groundwater level the bottom groundwater horizon had to be relieved in order to secure the buoyancy safety of the natural dam. Diaphragm wall works

Weapons On the entire building site and around the rear anchoring of the construction pit supporting system, according to the fire department of the Free and Hansa City of Hamburg the presence of weapons had to be assumed. Accordingly, extensive searches for explosive ordnace were required. During the exploratory borings for the southern lining axis an anomaly was detected close to St. Katharinenkirche. Through additional borings the anomaly was verified and confirmed in terms of location, depth and size. An object was suspected with a calculated volume of litres and a magnetic momentum of Am². The calculated depth was 6.70 m below ground level. Due to the existing soil conditions and the surrounding development, salvaging the suspected point using the standardized method, by means of shaft rings, was not possible. As an alternative the low-vibration method of large diameter hole boring by means of large drilling rig was chosen for the salvage operation. The casing was driven using a rotator, Leffer RDM 2000, down to a depth of approx m below ground level, with low vibration above the suspected point. Then with the aid of a crawler crane, excavation of the soil adjacent to the pipe commenced. The excavation was executed down to a depth of approx m below ground level, i.e. down to approx m before calculated depth of the object by means of crawler crane and spherical grab. Due to the prevailing groundwater conditions the excavation was performed inside the tube under water load, in order to prevent a hydraulic heave. Overdrilling the suspected point

After completion of the "rough excavation" by the crawler crane a weapons diver with 20 explosives law certification dived into the flooded casing in order to execute the remaining excavation down to the object manually. Once the object had been salvaged the interior was filled in line with professional practice up to the upper plot edge and the pipe removed. Pile foundation In order to deflect the load around the single-storey basement approx. 500 pieces foundation piles, in the form of partial displacement bored piles D= 45 cm to 60 cm were produced. The piles were partially arranged for tension loads as well in order to guarantee buoyancy safety of the building in its final state. Boring works Rebar cages

Quantities: 5,400 m² in-situ concrete diaphragm wall, D= 60 cm, max m deep, partially with inserted beam support 104 pieces large diameter bored piles, D=90 cm, in the form of secant bored pile wall, max. depth 18 m 10 pieces deep wells for relief dewatering 67 pieces grouted anchors, 4-5" strands, max. 625 kn, length m 503 pieces partial displacement bored piles (pressure and tension piles), D = cm, length m 35,500 m³ soil excavation, demolition, and disposal Dewatering 215 tonnes steel bracing Steel bracing
