1 EC % Acrylic Polymer for Elastomeric Coatings Description EC % acrylic polymer emulsion is Rohm and Haas Company s newest development in acrylic polymer technology for elastomeric wall coatings. Like other elastomeric wall coating binders from Rohm and Haas Company, this latest acrylic polymer provides coatings with an excellent balance of elongation, tensile strength, and dirt pick-up resistance over a wide temperature range. EC-3814 retains this balance of properties over formulation ranges not previously attainable for elastomeric wall coatings. EC-3814 can be formulated at a higher PVC than Rohm and Haas other elastomeric binders, which leads to formulated cost savings, while still maintaining excellent mechanical properties. Furthermore, it shows a dramatic improvement in alkali resistance over hot masonry substrates vs. other elastomeric binders. 3 Figure 1 demonstrates the excellent alkali resistance of EC This accelerated laboratory test is performed by coating the front and back of unglazed ceramic tiles, leaving the bottom ¾ uncoated. The EWC is allowed to cure for days after which the bottom, uncoated section of tile is immersed in a 0.5N solution of Sodium Hydroxide, a severe caustic. Capillary action will cause the caustic to slowly migrate through the tile over time. The results shown above were after five days in the caustic solution. The conventional EWC coating (on the left), is displaying severe degradation from exposure to the solution, while the coating on the right (based on EC-3814) remains relatively unscathed. Although superior alkali resistance is realized with EWC coatings based on EC-3814, we still continue to recommend the use of a primer/sealer over any fresh or aged masonry substrate to help extend the life of the topcoat. Figure 2 Temperature Elongation Profile. EC-3814 maintains good elongation at low temperatures, even when formulated at higher PVC. This unique property allows formulators to use EC-3814 at PVC s that are not feasible with other elastomeric wall coatings binders. The data in Figure 2 illustrates the advantage of using EC-3814 instead of EC-2848 at high PVC.

It may be a slight to moderate skin, eye, or respiratory irritant. ROZONE mildewcide, which is recommended in some of the formulations based on EC-3814 emulsion, can cause severe eye and skin damage and allergic reaction. It is important that you review our Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) and literature on ROZONE mildewcide before using it and that it be used only at recommended levels. Rohm and Haas Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) contain pertinent information that you may need to protect your employees and customers against any known health or safety hazards associated with our products. Under the OSHA Hazard Communication Standard, workers must have access to and understand MSDS on all hazardous substances to which they are exposed. Thus, it is important that you provide appropriate training and information to your employees and make sure they have available to them MSDS on any hazardous products in their workplace. Rohm and Haas Company sends MSDS for all its products, whether or not they are considered OSHA-hazardous, to both the "bill to" and/or "ship to" locations of all its customers upon initial shipment, including samples. If you do not have access to one of these MSDS, please contact your local Rohm and Haas representative for an additional copy. Updated MSDS are sent upon revision to all customers of record. In addition, MSDS are sent annually to all customers receiving products deemed hazardous under the Superfund Amendments and Reauthorization Act.
