4 Substrate Before starting any tiling project ensure that the substrate to be tiled is Clean & dry Free from any contaminants Sufficiently flat Free from all paints, sealers and other coatings Strong and rigid enough to support the tiles, adhesive and grout For guidelines on substrate preparation, see pages The preparation, type of adhesive & grout and whether expansions joints or tile sealer will be required, depends on the type of tile, type of substrate and site conditions. Tile Types Ceramic and other tile types vary according to material, production method, water absorption, size, thickness and weight. These affect the choice of adhesive and installation procedure. For guidelines on the suitability of each adhesive by tile, see pages 3-6. Substrate Priming Before tiling, most wall and floor substrates require priming. The reasons for priming are: To improve the adhesion of cement based products Reduce the porosity of porous substrates A slurry coat mix improves the adhesion to non porous surfaces Produce a barrier between calcium sulphate based surfaces and cement based adhesives to minimise the risk of chemical reaction See page 42 for a detailed substrate priming guide. General Guidelines Sealing Tiles Tiles and grout are by their nature porous. To prevent the ingress of water and subsequent damage to the substrate and adhesive bond, tile facings and grout should be sealed with an appropriate sealer. Likewise, to protect against staining from spills and dirt, facings and grout should be appropriately sealed. See pages for the correct choice of sealer. Movement Joints Movement joints must be installed in certain areas and positions to prevent tiles debonding from the substrate. Industry standards suggest that the maximum field should be no more than 10m in each direction but in practice, depending on the individual application, it tends to be between 5 to 8m. See page 43 for guidelines on the use of movement joints. Mixing Guidelines All Arc adhesives and grouts come with specific instructions on the bag. In general, powder adhesives and grouts should be mixed with clean, cold water until a smooth paste is achieved If using an electric drill mixer, blend at a slow speed. Do not exceed 300rpm. Mixed adhesive and grout can be remixed after a short period to freshen up but extra water should never be added after the initial mix as this will reduce final strength. Application All packs carry specific instructions but in general the following apply. Do not apply adhesives & grouts in temperatures below 5ºC Apply a maximum of 1m² of adhesive at a time Ensure ribs all run in the same direction Fix tiles before the adhesive forms a skin, typically 20 minutes If a skin forms, remove the adhesive and apply a fresh layer When grouting, completely fill the tile joints, compact well and ensure there are no voids Ensure tiles are fixed into a solid bed of adhesive. Do not dot and dab adhesive. European Standards All Arc products are manufactured in accordance with European Standards and meet or exceed the classifications which define the type and properties of each product. See page 41 for an explanation and description of each category and classification. NOTE: All information given is for general guidance only. 42 PREPARATION - FLOORS Electric Underfloor Heating Ensure existing substrate is firm, stable and in good condition. Remove any surface contamination, loose dust or dirt. A Prime the concrete floor with Arc Tilers Primer diluted 3 parts water to 1 part primer and allow to dry. B C Fix the backer boards with a thin 3 to 6mm bed of adhesive. Ensure the underfloor heating element / mat is taped down to the substrate. Embed the underfloor heating element using flexible levelling compound. Once cured, tile using Rapid-Flex or Rapid Lt-33. Once complete, allow 7 days before switching the heating on, initially at a low temperature and then increase the temperature gradually by 5 C per day. The cured screed should be heated gradually, no more than 5 C per day, to a maximum of 25 C and then maintain that temperature for 3 days before allowing it to cool down to room temperature. Turn off the heating 24 hours prior to tiling, or in cold weather reduce to below 15 C. Remove any loose flaking layers and ensure the surface is free from any contaminants, loose dust or dirt. Prime the screed with Arc Tilers Primer diluted 3 parts water to 1 part primer and allow to dry. Very porous screeds may require more than one coat. Once tiling is completed, allow 7 days before gradually increasing the temperature of the heating. 47 SUBSTRATE PRIMING GUIDE Before tiling, the majority of wall and floor substrates will require priming. Substrates are primed for the following reasons: To improve the adhesion of cement based products Reduce the porosity of porous substrates A slurry coat mix improves the adhesion to non porous surfaces Produce a barrier between calcium sulphate based surfaces and cement based adhesives to minimise the risk of chemical reaction Arc Tiler s Primer is a high quality styrene butadiene co-polymer emulsion for use as a primer, bonding agent and sealer. 48 EXPANSION JOINT GUIDE Structural Versus Movement Joints Structural joints are physical gaps which divide a building into smaller sub sections accommodating differential movement between each sub section. Movement joints are small joints designed to absorb localised stresses. Causes of Movement Structural: Structural settlement Structural deformation due to loading Drying shrinkage Ambient thermal gain and loss Wind loading Seismic events Localised Movement: Drying shrinkage of localised adjacent substrates Small scale localised deformation such as creep Ambient thermal differentials Imposed thermal variations such as underfloor heating Movement Joint Arc supply 2 types of movement joint: 1. Optimax Aluminium Heavy Duty Aluminium (MSA). These movement joint profiles are designed to accommodate localised stresses within tiled floors. The aluminium side section of the profile offers protection to the tile edge while the santoprene infill offers outstanding flexibility, tensile strength and chemical and weathering resistance. The anchoring angles are aluminium grade 6063 T6, which is heat treated to increase tensile strength. 2. PVC Movement & Perimeter Joint (MLB). This is a co-extruded PVC movement control joint designed to appear as discretely as a grout line whilst absorbing localised compression and expansion stresses. The PVC is resistant to most chemicals and detergents generally used in tiled applications. It has a detachable anchor which allows the joint to be used as a perimeter joint. Positioning of Movement Joints The theory is to create tile fields large enough to absorb differential movement between the substrate and the tile covering. Movement joints should be installed in certain areas to prevent tiles or grout from cracking or to prevent the tiles from tenting and becoming debonded from the substrate. The exact positioning of movement joints is vital to them successfully protecting the installation. Industry guidelines suggest that the maximum tile field should be no more than 10 metres in each direction. In practice, depending on the individual application, it tends to be between 5 and 8 metres. WHEN TO USE EXPANSION / PERIMETER JOINTS Based on BS 5385 (A) Any area greater than 2m x 1m where the tiling abuts walls requires perimeter joints as a minimum (B) For larger areas, the maximum distance between joints should not be greater than 8m in any direction In addition movement joints should always be installed directly above (1) Changes in the substrate (2) Structural joints in the substrate (3) Gaps in the substrate Installation Ensure the correct depth of movement profile is selected according to tile depth. Using a suitable notched trowel spread the tile adhesive onto the substrate and firmly bed the profile, ensuring the adhesive penetrates the holes in the flange and covers the anchoring legs. Best practice is for the profile to be about 1mm lower than the tile. A grout joint should be left between the tile and the profile
