System Wall Height (maximum) Wall Width (maximum) CSR967-S CSR968-S CSR967-SA CSR968-SA CSR969-SA S = Screw Only Plasterboard Fixing -SA = Screw and Adhesive Plasterboard Fixing Introduction. CSR Gyprock and Fibre Cement (GFC) steel frame wall systems use zinc coated steel components with one or more layers of Gyprock plasterboard and/or CSR Fibre Cement linings fixed to one or both sides. A wide choice of systems is available for both fire rated and non-fire rated applications in nonloadbearing and loadbearing situations. These wall systems are most often used in internal non-loadbearing applications, in commercial, industrial, institutional, residential and high-rise residential construction. Systems are also available for external walls Design Considerations. STRUCTURAL DESIGN. All walls must be designed for the applied loads. Guidance is given for the selection of Rondo studs and Lysaght, Stramit or UniSpan top hat sections for nonloadbearing internal walls only. Load bearing walls and walls subject to wind pressures shall be appropriately designed to meet the relevant Australian Standards or construction manuals. Non Loadbearing Walls. Maximum wall height and the required stud size may be selected from Table B1 to B5, appropriate for the selected system. These walls are designed for lateral loads only, using the composite action of the frame and sheeting. Non load bearing walls in this manual have been designed as follows: Minimum design pressure of 0.25kPa and a maximum deflection of (height 240) or 30mm maximum. (Based on BCA Specification C1.8, 3.4 (b)) Fire rated walls lined with GYPROCK FYRCHEK with studs selected from Table C2 meet the requirements of BCA Specification C1.8 Clause 3.4 Walls generally. Internal wall studs are friction fitted into tracks with no clearance at the bottom and a minimum allowance for vertical expansion of 15mm at the top. Where vertical building movement is expected an additional gap is required. In this case deflection head tracks must be used. Refer to Section Z for details. Staggered stud walls using top hats are fixed to the base track and use Rondo 126/152 clip at the top track. Staggered stud walls using Rondo C studs must use the CSR staggered stud clip to restrain the stud from twisting. Wall tracks must be fixed to floors and ceilings at 600mm maximum centres. Each plate fixing is required to withstand a shear load of 0.75kN for a UDL of 0.25kPa and 1.1kN for UDL of 0.35kPa. Tall residential buildings often have operable doors and windows, resulting in internal walls being subject to wind pressure. In these cases, walls must be designed for the appropriate loads. B4. 5 Loadbearing Walls. Walls designed as load bearing and lined with GYPROCK FYRCHEK meet the requirements of BCA Specification C1.8 Clause 3.4 Walls generally. The building designer must ensure load bearing walls have been designed: To resist all applied loads. To be in accordance with AS4600 or AS3740. Assuming no contribution to axial strength is required of the wall linings. To meet the stated Fire Resistance Level (), the axial load capacity of some wall systems is reduced. This is a result of the steel weakening at high temperature during a fire test. The systems are noted with an Axial Capacity Reduction percentage (ACR%). For these systems, the designer must increase the applied loads before selecting stud size to compensate for the axial capacity reduction percentage, as shown in the system specification. Studs are to be placed at 600mm maximum centres with nogging provided as detailed in Table B1 or B2, or as noted in the system table. The capacity of head and base tracks for walls subject to wind loads must be checked. Typically, studs are cleated at head and base with a Rondo angle bracket. Contact Rondo for more information on designing walls subject to wind loads. FIRE RESISTANCE. The steel frame wall systems in this manual are suitable for the stated when designed in accordance with the structural considerations above. CSR GFC fire rated steel stud wall systems have been designed with fire protection that limits the temperature of the steel framing to a maximum of 450 C at the fire resistance level () stated. Therefore the structural design of the framing need only provide for normal temperature conditions, and no additional consideration of fire rating is required. In some systems this temperature is exceeded and the axial capacity of the stud must be reduced to compensate for the loss of strength. The percentage reduction is noted for each affected systems. For more information regarding the fire resistance of steel stud walls, refer to BRANZ assessment FAR To protect structural steel beams and columns that are entirely within a wall, the of the wall system must be at least equivalent to that required by the structural member. For example, a wall system with 90/90/90 provides 90// for a steel column within the wall. Framing & Lining. Steel framed walls required to have an must comply with the following: Framing must be made from steel of BMT 0.5mm to 2.0mm. Wall plates must be fixed to the fire rated support structure with steel fasteners such as expansion anchors, easy drive masonry anchors and power driven fasteners. Plasterboard must be screw or nail fixed only, adhesive is not permitted. In wet areas, Gyprock Fyrchek MR must be used in lieu of Gyprock Fyrchek. For single layer applications, butt joints must be backed by either a stud or nogging. This is not required for recessed joints. For double layer vertically sheeted applications, butt joints may be reinforced using laminating screws without the need for framing support. Joints in the outer layer of all systems lined with plasterboard or Wallboard must be set with Gyprock paper tape. As a minimum, a single coat finish may be used. Joints in external systems lined with CSR Fibre Cement Texture Base Sheet must be set with the tape and compound recommended for the texture coating system Spacing of girts in horizontally framed systems must be as shown in installation detail FIG B17. For general installation information, refer to FIG B2 to B18. For information on frame design and detailing, including treatment at junctions, sub floor and roof areas, cavity barriers and penetrations, refer to Section Z of this manual, and brochure GYP544, Gyprock Steel Frame Wall Systems. The Fire Resistance Level () of the systems detailed in this section will not be detrimentally affected by; Increasing the thickness of the wall. Increasing the cross-sectional dimensions of the framing elements. Decreasing the stud spacing. Decreasing the fixing centres of wall sheet materials. The inclusion of bulk cavity insulation materials such as Glasswool, Rockwool and Polyester. The use of Fyrchek MR plasterboard in lieu of Fyrchek plasterboard of the same thickness. Additional layers of plasterboard or CSR Fibre Cement. B5. The Red Book

6 Wall curved in plan with a radius of curvature no less than 3m. The addition of a timber cladding. The addition of any other cladding meeting BCA Spec C1.1 Clause 2.4. Caulking. To attain the specified, all perimeter gaps and penetrations must be carefully and completely filled with appropriate caulking material. CSR Gyprock Fire Mastic or other tested fire and acoustic rated material of equivalent or better performance must be used. Details for fire sealing of penetrations is given in Section Z. Vermiculite plaster has no capacity to accommodate building movement and may not be suitable for use as a general purpose fire rated caulking. Its use is specified in some wall/ceiling junctions, refer to brochure GYP570, Gyprock Ceiling Systems Installation Guide. PERFORMANCE. The acoustic performance of wall systems is expressed in terms of Rw and Rw+Ctr where appropriate. The performance of the as-built system may be affected by sound flanking, the effectiveness of workmanship and caulking, the presence and treatment of penetrations, and the inclusion of structural elements and bridging items. Refer to Section A for detailed information on addressing these issues. General Notes. The acoustic performance of systems may be adversely affected by the use of studs with higher BMT or closer spacings than those specified, or additional linings fixed with battens. The acoustic performance of CSR wall systems is not adversely affected by the order of lining sheets that are fixed direct to framing. In non fire rated systems, to attain the stated acoustic performance, use CSR Gyprock Wet Area Acrylic Sealant, CSR Gyprock Fire Mastic or other tested acoustic rated material of equivalent or better performance. Installation. FRAMING. CSR GFC recommends steel components manufactured by Rondo Building Services Pty Ltd. Additional information on the steel components can be obtained from the Rondo Building Services Pty Ltd, telephone For information on Lysaght, Stramit or UniSpan top hat sections, please refer to the appropriate component manufacturer, and the Gyprock Steel Frame Wall Systems Installation Guide, GYP544. Other steel components of equivalent performance may be used, however it is the responsibility of the manufacturer of the component to substantiate equivalent performance with the recommended component. For detailed information on wall junctions, intersections, frame attachments and penetrations, refer to Section Z of this manual. Walls curved in plan may be built with steel stud frames. Selection information on stud centres and plasterboard thickness for various curvatures can be found in brochure GYP544, Gyprock Steel Frame Wall Systems. WALLBOARD & PLASTERBOARD FIXING. Walls may be built to achieve a particular Level of Finish as defined in AS/NZS The Level of Finish specified can have requirements for frame alignment, jointing and back blocking methods, and sheet orientation. CSR Fibre Cement Wallboard and Gyprock plasterboard may be installed vertically or horizontally, although for some Levels of Finish horizontal sheeting must be used. Walls lined with Gyprock plasterboard or CSR Fibre Cement Wallboard may be finished with tiles. For tiles greater than 32kg/m 2 or over 6.5mm thickness, specific installation details apply. Refer to the appropriate installation manual. PLASTERBOARD JOINTING & FINISHING. Refer to the Gyprock Residential Installation Guide, GYP547 and CSR Fibre Cement Wet Area Lining Systems, FC101 for detailed jointing and finishing information. It should be noted that: Multi-layered systems only require jointing and finishing of the outer layer. B6. The Red Book

7 It is a requirement of the BCA that a water resistant taping compound, such as CSR Gyprock Fibre Cement Wet Area Base Coat be used at vertical wall junctions and horizontal and vertical joints within wet areas such as showers. CONTROL JOINTS. Control joints must be installed to allow for structural movement. Allowance for movement must be made through the frame, lining and any tiles. Refer to Section Z of this manual for details. Control joints must be installed at all construction joints in the building and at the following locations: Non-tiled internal walls with fibre cement outer layer at 7.2m maximum centres. Tiled internal walls with fibre cement outer layer at 4.2m maximum centres. Walls with plasterboard outer layer at 12m maximum centres. External walls refer to the appropriate installation manual. EXTERNAL WALLS. Gyprock GFC external wall systems rely on a range of cladding systems to provide weather resistance. There is a range of effectiveness of these systems, and CSR Gyprock recommends the cladding be installed with a drained cavity. Cavity systems allow drainage and drying of any water that penetrates, and are known to have good long-term performance. Sarking is also recommended to provide additional weather protection to framing and lining. External walls require specific design for condensation control and energy efficiency, depending on the climate and internal environment. Contact CSR Bradford for information on thermal insulation systems and products. Components. LINING & FIXING MATERIALS. Refer to Section A for detailed information on CSR Gyprock and Fibre Cement lining products, fixings, adhesive and accessories.
