25 Surface Preparation Fundamentals Surface Wetting In order for the liquid adhesive to maximize surface area it must have a lower surface tension than the surface energy of the substrate Limited contact/wetting Liquid stays off the surface Optimum contact/wetting Liquid smooths onto the surface The liquid adhesive has to be in optimum contact to the surface through surface preparation, e.g., cleaning, pretreatment 25
