1 INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF PLUMBING AND MECHANICAL OFFICIALS IAPMO GUIDE CRITERIA FOR HINGE TYPE COUPLINGS USED FOR JOINING HUBLESS CAST IRON SOIL PIPE AND FITTINGS IGC PURPOSE 1.1 The purpose of this standard is to establish a generally acceptable for hinge type couplings used for joining hubless cast iron soil pipe and fittings. Its purpose is to serve as a guide for producers, distributors, architects, engineers, contractors, installers, inspectors, and users; to promote understanding regarding materials and manufacturer and to provide for identifying hinge type couplings that conform with this standard. 1.2 The provisions of this standard are not intended to prevent the use of any alternate material or method of construction, provided any such alternate meets the intent and requirements of this document and changes are amended to this standard. 2. SCOPE 2.1 This standard covers physical requirements and tests in addition to general description of materials used. Certain features of construction and finish of the final product are also given together with the methods of marking and identification. 2.2 The hinge type couplings covered by this standard are intended for use on hubless cast iron soil pipe and fittings. 3. REFERENCED STANDARDS 3.1 All standards referenced herein shall be the current edition of those standards. DEFINITION 4.1 Coupling shall mean the complete assembly. 4.2 Gasket shall mean elastomeric portion of the coupling. 4.3 Clamp assembly shall mean the portion of the coupling excluding the gaskets including the tightening mechanism. 5. GENERAL REQUIREMENTS 5.1 The elastomeric gasket shall consist of one piece complying with the physical properties in ASTM C 564 using the Durometer Hardness column of Table 1 of that document as specified by the manufacturer The elastomeric gasket shall have an inside center stop-ring spaced equal-distance from the ends to serve as a stop between the pipe/fitting ends that does not create an enlargement chamber or recess with a ledge, shoulder or reduction of pipe area or offer an obstruction to flow The elastomeric gasket shall be free of defects such as cracks, holes, blisters, tears and/or pockets that may affect their use and serviceability. 5.2 The clamp assembly shall be made of polypropylene having a minimum cell class of complying with ASTM D Material exposed within ducts or plenums shall be noncombustible or shall have a flame spread index not greater than 25 and a smoke developed index not greater than 50 when tested in accordance with UL All clamp assemblies shall be so designed and manufactured so as to be capable of being torqued to a minimum of 115 % of their rated torque in inch/pounds required by the manufacturers specifications Clamp assembly drive screws, screws or bolts shall be type 305 chrome plated steel and shall not have screwdriver slots and shall be subjected for 24 hours to the salt spray test as described in ASTM G 85, Annex A Hangers. Couplings shall be supported in such a manner as to maintain its alignment and prevent sagging of the pipe. Metallic hangers and supports complying with MSS SP 58 shall be sufficient strength to support the weight of pipe its contents and installed in accordance with manufacturer s installation instructions. TESTING REQUIREMENTS 6.1 Each coupling tested shall be assembled according to the manufacturer s instructions between two sections of randomly selected hubless cast iron soil pipe and the following tests conducted: Blockage, Deflection, Shear and Thrust. 6.2 Blockage Test. The pipe assemblies shall be supported in a manner that restrains joint movement as shown in Figure 1 only if the manufacturer s installation instructions require the pipes to be installed restrained for 5 through 15 only The assemblies shall be filled with water, all air expelled and a hydrostatic pressure applied in increments of 1 psi at approximately 30 second intervals until a pressure of 15 psi or the stated rated working pressure in excess of 15 psi is reached and maintained for 8 hours. Any leakage shall mean failure Pipe sizes 1½ inch through 4 inch shall be installed un-restrained if the manufacturer s installation instructions require no restraint. Figure Deflection Test. Each coupling tested shall be mounted between two pieces of randomly selected hubless cast iron soil pipe. The outbound ends of the pipe shall be closed with test plugs. The assembly shall be filled with water and hydrostatically pressurized to 15 psi or the rated working pressure if greater than 15 psi for the duration of the test One pipe shall be rigidly supported and while the assembly is under pressure, the opposite end of the other pipe shall be raised 1 per lineal foot of pipe. The pressure shall be maintained for five (5) minutes and leakage shall not be permitted. A test apparatus such as the one shown in Figure 2 is suggested Pipe sizes 5 inch through 15 inch shall be installed restrained if the manufacturer s installation instructions require restraint. 6 Figure Shear Test. Two joined five foot (5 ) lengths of randomly selected hubless cast iron soil pipe shall be supported on blocks at three locations. One length shall be supported on blocks, one near the uncoupled end, and the other immediately adjacent to the couplings. This length shall be firmly restrained in position (Refer to Figure 3). The other coupled length shall be supported by a single block at the end of the pipe A load of 100 pounds per inch of nominal diameter shall be applied at a point 6 from the edge of the coupling upon a 12 length of (3 x 3) angle iron or load distributing pad located on the top of the pipe immediately adjacent to the coupling of the pipe having one support only Under this loading there shall be no visible leakage or displacement of more than 3/8 from true alignment when an internal pressure of 15 psi or the rated working pressure if greater than 15 psi is applied. The load and internal pressure shall be maintained for 15 minutes and leakage shall not be permitted Pipe sizes 5 inch through 15 inch shall be installed restrained if the manufacturer s installation instructions require restraint. 7 Figure Thrust Test. Each coupling tested shall be assembled according to the manufacturer s instruction between two ten to twelve inch long new sections of machined standard weight steel (Schedule 40) pipe and the Thrust Test shall be conducted The plain ends of the pipe to be used for the Thrust Test shall be machined to the correct diameters. The assembly shall consist of a maximum outside diameter pipe connected to a minimum outside diameter pipe with diameters as referenced in Table A. Plain ends shall have.015 deep grooves machined circumferentially around them at 1/8 intervals down the pipe section for a distance equal to that covered by the elastomeric sleeve. The tool used to machine the grooves shall have a 60 inclined angle and shall cut into the pipe from a perpendicular position. The surface between the grooves shall be a lathe turned surface of 125 RMS The plain ends of the pipe for the Thrust Test are to be uncoated and must be cleaned with acetone and thoroughly dried before each assembly Fill the pipe assembly with water, expelling all air and increase the hydrostatic pressure at a rate of 1 psi every 30 seconds until the target test pressure is reached. The target test pressure is 20 psi for 1-1/2 through 5 inch, 18 psi for 6 inch, 10 psi for 8 inch and 6 psi for 10 inch, 12 inch, and 15 inch pipe. When the target pressure is reached, it must be held for 10 minutes. Any leakage or axial joint movement of more than.150 shall mean failure The pipe assemblies are to be supported in a manner that does not restrain joint movement as shown in Figure 4. 9 6.6 UV Testing. The coupling shall be tested in accordance with the following: Property Conditions ASTM Test Requirement Method Weather- One cycle G 154 Max. 50% loss ometer 4 hrs. 140 F in tensile 4 hrs. Condensation strength 122 F (50 C) ultimate 2000 hours elongation * The lamps shall be UV-B lamps with a peak emission at 313 Nm. 7. MARKINGS AND IDENTIFICATION 7.1 Each clamp assembly shall be permanently marked with the manufacturer s name or trademark, country of origin, pipe size, clamp torque, and rated working pressure. 7.2 Each gasket shall be permanently marked with raised letters with the manufacturer s name or trademark, country of origin, pipe size and ASTM C The product shall also have any other marking required by law.
