5 For BIS Use Only Doc: CED 50(8066 ) November 2015 BUREAU OF INDIAN STANDARDS DRAFT FOR COMMENTS ONLY (Not to be reproduced without the permission of BIS or used as an Indian Standard) Plastic Piping Systems Last Date for Comments: Sectional Committee, CED January 2015 Draft Indian Standard ORIENTED UNPLASTISIZED POLYVINYL CHLORIDE (PVC-O) PIPES AND JOINTS FOR THE CONVEYANCE OF WATER UNDER PRESSURE SPECIFICATION FOREWORD In the formulation of this standard, considerable assistance has been derived from ISO : 2014(E) Pipes for the Conveyance of Water Under Pressure Specification Oriented polyvinyl chloride (PVC O).The sizes of pipes however have been kept as per manufacturing practices being followed in India. This standard does not purport to address all the safety problems associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the users of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitation prior to use. For the purpose of deciding whether a particular requirement of this standard is compiled with the final value, observed or calculated, expressing the result of a test or analysis, shall be rounded off in accordance with IS 2 : 1960 Rules for rounding off numerical values (revised). The number of significant places retained in the rounded off value should be the same as that of the specified value in this standard.

6 Draft Indian Standard Doc:CED50(8066) November 2015 ORIENTED UNPLASTISIZED POLYVINYL CHLORIDE (PVC-O) PIPES AND JOINTS FOR THE CONVEYANCE OF WATER UNDER PRESSURE SPECIFICATION 1. SCOPE 1.1 This standard specifies the requirements of pipes and joints made of oriented unplasticized poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC-O), for piping systems intended to be used underground or above-ground where not exposed to direct sunlight, for water mains and services, pressurized sewer systems and irrigation systems. The piping system according to this standard is intended for the conveyance of cold water under pressure, for drinking water and for general purposes up to and including 45 C, and especially in those applications where special performance requirements are needed, such as impact loads and pressure fluctuations, up to pressure of 25 bars. Joints constructed of other materials should meet their own relevant standards in addition to the fitness-for-purpose requirements of this Indian Standard. 1.2 When used under the conditions for which they are designed, materials in contact with, or likely to come into contact with, drinking water shall not constitute a toxic hazard, shall not support microbial growth and shall not give rise to any unpleasant taste or odour, cloudiness or discoloration of the water. Where applicable, pipes and their joints and the sealing rings shall conform to the current national regulations concerning materials in contact with drinking water. NOTE 1 The producer and the end-user can come to agreement on the possibilities of use for temperatures above 45 C on a case-by-case basis. 2. REFERENCES The standards listed in Annex A contain provisions which, through reference in this text, constitute provision of this standard. At the time of publication the editions indicated were valid. All standards are subject to revision and parties to agreement based on this standard are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the standards indicated in Annex A. 3. TERMS AND DEFINITIONS For the purposes of this document the following terms and definitions apply. Table 1

At higher temperature up t o 45 C, the strength of the pipe reduces and the working pressure shall be modified in accordance with Fig. D-1. Occasional rise in temperature as in summer season with concurrent corresponding reduction in temperature during nights has no deleterious effect on the life/working pressure of the pipes considering the total life of pipes. 6 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS OF PIPES 6.1 Appearance When viewed without magnification, the internal and external surfaces of the pipe shall be smooth, clean, and free from scoring, cavities and other surface defects which would prevent conformity with this Indian Standard. The material shall not contain visible impurities. The ends of the pipe shall be cut cleanly and square to the axis of the pipe. 6.2 Colour The colour of the pipes shall be grey, blue or cream. The cream colour is not allowed for pipes intended for aboveground application. 6.3 Opacity If a pipe is required to be opaque for use in above ground applications, the wall of the pipe shall not transmit more than 0.2 % of visible light falling on it when tested in accordance with IS 12235(Part3). 7 GEOMETRICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF PIPES 7.1 Dimension of Pipes

14 7.1.1 Diameter The mean outside diameter, outside diameter at any point and their tolerances shall be as given in Table 4 and shall be measured according to the method given in IS (part1) Mean outside diameter The permissible variation (dem - dn) between the mean outside diameter (dem' ) and the nominal outside diameter (dn) of a pipe shall be positive in the form +x, where x is less than or equal to the greater of the following two values: a) 0.3 mm, and b) dn rounded off to the next higher 0.1 mm Diameter at any point The permissible variation between the outside diameter at any point (de) and the nominal diameter (da) of a pipe (also called tolerance on ovality) shall not exceed the greater of the following two values: a) 0.5 mm, and b) dn rounded off to the next higher 0.1 mm. 15 Wall Thickness The wall thickness of the pipes shall be as given in Table (5 to 9b) as follows: Table 5 for material class 315 for C=1.6 and 2.0 Table 6 for material class 355 for C=1.6 and 2.0 Table 7 for material class 400 for C=1.6 and 2.0 Table 8a for material class 450 for C=1.6 and 2.0 Table 8b for material class 450 for C=1.4 Table 9a for material class 500 for C =1.6 and 2. Table 9b for material class 500 for C = 1.4 Wall thickness shall be measured by any of the three methods given in IS (Part 1). To check the conformity of the wall thickness of the pipe throughout its entire length, it is necessary to measure the wall thickness of the pipe at any point along its length. This shall be done by cutting the pipe at any point along its length and measuring the wall thickness as above. Alternatively, to avoid destruction of the pipe, non- destructive testing methods such as the use of ultrasonic wall thickness measurement gauges shall be used at any four points along the length of the pipe Tolerance on wall thickness a) For pipes of minimum wall thickness 6 mm or less, the permissible variation between the minimum wall thickness (e min ) and the wall thickness at any point (e), (e e min ) shall be positive in the form of +y, where y =O.l e min +0.2mrn. b) For pipes of minimum wall thickness greater than 6 mm, the permissible variation of wall thickness shall again be positive in the form of +Y, where y would be applied in two parts. c) The average wall thickness shall be determined by taking at least six measurements of wall thickness round the pipe and including both the absolute minimum and absolute maximum measured values. The tolerance applied to this average wall thickness from these measurements shall be within the range 0.1 e min mm (see Table 5, 6, 7, 8a, 8b, 9a & 9b). d) The maximum wall thickness at any point shall be within the range O.15 e min (see Table 5, 6, 7, 8a, 8b, 9a & 9b) e) The results of these calculations for checking tolerance shall be rounded off to the next higher 0.1 mm Length The nominal pipe length, l m, shall be a minimum length which does not include the depth of the socketed portions. It is recommended that pipes be supplied in one or more of the following lengths: 6 m, 10

16 m, 12 m. The pipes may be supplied in other lengths where so agreed upon between the manufacturer and the purchaser. 7.2 Dimensions of Integral Socket The minimum depth of engagement of integral sockets with elastomeric sealing ring type joints shall conform to IS Attention is drawn to the fact that the depths of engagement required by IS 4985 could be insufficient for PVC-O pipes under certain circumstances. It is recommended that the suitability of depth of engagement be verified. In Annex B example is given of calculation of depth of engagement. NOTE There is no minimum wall thickness requirement for sealing ring type sockets. It is considered as being more relevant to verify the strength of the sockets as being at least the same as the strength of the pipe in accordance with Although this Indian Standard covers only pipes and joints of PVC-O materials, the requirements of depth of engagement are relevant to couplers of other materials that can be employed with PVC-O pipes. Shorter depths of engagement can be suitable where restricted to 6 m and shorter lengths. 7.3 Pipe Ends Pipes with plain end(s) to be used with elastomeric sealing ring type joints shall have a chamfer conforming to Figure 1 with 12 α 15. Fig. 1 Spigot end for pipes with elastomeric se aling ring

32 , , ,5 NOTE Masses are based on experience of pipe material classes 450 and 500. Masses for other pipe material classes are still under study. NOTE Impact characteristics can change over time. These values are applicable only at the time of manufacture. 8.3 Ring Stiffness The ring stiffness of pipes conforming to this Indian Standard can be determined in accordance with IS (Part 18). Pipes of stiffness less than 4 KN/m 2 might not be suitable where high vacuum or external pressure could be developed, and could need special installation techniques where installed below ground. National regulations and/or national practices on use of specific fittings can require minimum stiffness of pipes. NOTE Minimum stiffness of pipes could be required for installation with some type of fittings. The calculated nominal stiffness of the pipes is given in Annex C. 8.4 Orientation Level Variations in stretch ratios should be within 10 % of the value determined on the pipes used for classification. The determination of the stretch ratios may be carried out as per Annex F. NOTE When determining the orientation degrees in the tangential and axial direction of the pipe, use is made of the fact that the biaxial oriented pipe in the rubber phase (above the glass/rubber transition temperature) will shrink till the initial dimensions determined by the extrusion process. 9 PHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS

37 10.5 End-Load-Bearing Joints Pressure and Bending Test for Leak Tightness and Strength When end-load-bearing joints having one or more sockets (see note) and fitted with one or more elastomeric sealing rings together with one or more locking rings to withstand the longitudinal forces resulting from the application of internal hydraulic pressure are tested in accordance with IS 7634 (Part -3) at a single ambient temperature of (T ± 5) C (where T is any temperature between 20 C and 35 C), the joint shall remain le ak tight throughout the whole of the test period. NOTE Such joints are usually, but not necessarily, in the form of double sockets. 11 ELASTOMERIC SEALS Elastomeric seals used for joining components shall conform to both of the following requirements. a) The rings shall conform to the material requirements specified in IS b) The rings shall be free from chemical agents (e.g. plasticizers) that could have a detrimental effect on the pipes or fittings, or on the quality of the water. 12 SAMPLING AND CRITERIA FOR CONFORMITY The sampling procedure and the criteria for conformity shall be as given in Annex. F. 13 MARKING Pipes shall be permanently marked at intervals not greater than 1 m. The markings shall include at least the following information: a) the manufacturer s name and/or trade mark; b) the pipe material and material classification number, e.g. PVC-O 450; c) the nominal outside diameter d n and nominal wall thickness e n, e.g ; d) reference to this Indian Standard, e) the nominal pressure PN; f) the C-factor, i.e. C = 1.4, C = 1.6 or C = 2.0; g) production site; h) production date or code. 28

38 14 GUIDELINES FOR STORAGE AND INSTALATION 14.1 Storage The following guidelines are suggested: Store the pipes horizontally on a flat surface and place supports every 1.5 meters to avoid the bending of the product. Avoid scratches especially in the crest of the socket, due to dragging the pipe on the ground, mainly if the surface is made of stone, concrete or asphalt. Do not stack more than 1.5 meters high, as this can damage lower pipes or even the upper pipes could fall. The sockets should be free, alternating sockets and ends. In case of prolonged sun exposure, protect pallets with an opaque material. White colour is preferable because it avoids the over-heating of the pipes Realization of the Trench The trench must be free of stones at the bottom and at the sides. Stones smaller than mm are allowed, but they cannot be the main size of the ground particles. Minimum Trench Width: DN Minimum width of trench mm m Depth of Minimum width of trench trench m m h< <h< <h< h> As a rule of thumb, when there is no road traffic involved, the pipes crown will be at a minimum depth of 0.6 meters; with road traffic, the minimum depth is 1 meter. 29

39 14.3 Bedding and Filling the Trench Pipes should be installed following the guidelines below: 1. Before placing the pipe, a sand bed should be prepared (a fine granular material could be used instead of sand) with a thickness from 10 cm to 15 cm. The pipe should be well aligned and levelled. 2. The pipe must lie on the sand bed.it must be ensured that all the lower part of the pipe is settled on the sand bed trying to soak as much as possible in order to make the angle of sand that supports the kidneys of the pipe as big as possible. 3. Once the pipe is placed, chamberlain sides must be filled with the selected material and compacted to achieve >95% Proctor Normal. 4. The trench must be filled with the selected material and compacted laterally until the upper part of the pipe is buried at least 30 cm. 5. Steps 3 and 4 can be done with the same natural material obtained from the excavation, trying to avoid rocks and large stones, and checking that this natural material can support the forces produced by the pressure inside of the pipe. Natural soil can be used as the selected filler material whenever it fulfills the following criteria: a) The material cannot consist of angular stones or similar material. b) Filler material should not contain bigger particles than the ones shown in the following table. c) Filler material should not contain blocks of soil twice the size of the maximum dimensions of the particles given in the table. Maximum Particle Size Nominal diameter Maximumsize DN mm DN < DN < DN < DN 40

40 6. From the 30 cm above the pipe until the surface of the ground, the trench can be filled with natural material not specifically selected and compacting directly over the whole surface of the trench. 31

41 14.4 Assembly Remove the protection caps. Verify that the pipe is clean and in good condition. Paying attention to the sockets and spigot ends. Check that the chamfer is correct and free of cracks. Verify that the seal is in its place, clean and free of foreign materials (stones, sand, etc.). Lubricate the chamfer of the spigot and the seal with joint lubricant. Line up the pipe as much as possible horizontal and vertically. Insert only the chamfer edge of the socket, just to support the pipe but leaving the socket lip free. In the case of pipes with nominal diameter 250 mm, a firm and dry push should be given to seize the momentum produced by the free movement in the lip of the socket and introduce it until the mark is hidden into the socket. When installing diameters >250mm, one should use mechanical means to introduce the pipe using materials such as wood, hoists, tackles or slings. 32
