(See Brick Institute of America, Technical Notes on Brick Construction. ) Release 8 Revision II, Released November 1989 and 8A Revised, Released September
PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 MORTAR A. Installation Repointing: 1. If required: Clean walls, using moderate pressure, hot water and/or steam, without cleaning solutions or grit. Pressure should be approximately psi and directed at the masonry at an angle of not more than 30 degrees from the wall surface. If efflorescence exists, contact Architect for method of removal prior to proceeding. When spot repointing, pressure washing may not be required; consult Architect prior to initiating work. 2. Identify areas to be repointed as specified by Architect, Owner or Owner s Representative. 3. Install sample area: See 1.3B this Section. 4. The old mortar should be cut out, by means of hand chisels and mash hammers or by small power chisels (either pneumatic or a thin diamond blade) to a uniform depth of 2 to 2 1/2 times the width of the joint or until sound mortar is reached. Care must be taken not to damage the brick edges when cutting vertical joints. All dust and debris must be removed from the joint by brushing, blowing with air or rinsing with water. 5. Joints to be repointed should be dampened. To ensure good bond, brick must absorb all surface water. No standing water should be present. 6. Pack mortar tightly in layer ¼ maximum. 7. Layers to be thumbprint hard before applying successive layer. 8. Tool to match the original profile after the last layer of mortar is thumb print hard. B. Procedure for Mixing Mortar Note: The mixed mortar shall be of consistency to be molded into a ball by hand. A skilled brick layer should test mortar for feel releasing or increasing sand or water as needed. Mortar shall be easy working. 1. Provide mortar type N in accordance with ASTM C270 or match existing throughout structure. Consult Architect prior to proceeding with the work., 2. Proportions: As per Specifications of the Brick Institute of America, Technical Notes on Brick Construction, release 7F, 28, 8 A + B and 11E, revised January, 1987, July 1986, November 1989, September 1988, and June
3. Repointing mortar should be prehydrated to reduce excessive shrinkage. Prehydrate as per Specifications of the Brick Institute of America, Technical Notes on BrickConstruction, release 7F, 28, 8 A + B, and 11E, revised January, 1987, July 1986, November 1989, September 1988, and June A sample or samples of mortar shall be mixed dry by hand mixing and compared with the existing mortar sample for color, texture and amount and size of sand, aggregate, or other materials, i.e. oyster shells or horse hair. 5. The mixed mortar shall be of a consistency to be molded into a ball by hand. 6. Mortar shall be mixed with maximum amount of water to produce workable consistency. 7. Mixed mortar shall be permitted to stand for not less than one -half hour, nor more than one and one-half hours for pre-hydration. 8. All mortar shall be used within one-half (½) hour of its initial mixing. Re-tempering of the mortar (adding of additional water to the mix) to replace evaporated water shall not be permitted. 9. Upon completion, clean surfaces of masonry as required for proper application of the specified finishes. 3.2 INSTALLATION OF BRICK MASONRY UNITS A. Examine the areas and conditions under which work of this Section will be performed. Correct conditions detrimental to timely and proper completion of the work. Do not proceed until unsatisfactory conditions are corrected. B. Comply with Section 2.1. C. Installation: 1. Wetting of bricks: a. Pre-wet only if IRA is greater than thirty grams per minute per thirty square inch area. Wetting shall be performed no more then 24 or less than 12 hours prior to laying brick. b. Provide sufficient dampness so that mortar will remain plastic enough to permit the brick to be leveled and plumbed immediately after being laid, without destroying the bond. 2. Laying: a. All work shall be in compliance with the Specifications of the Brick Institute of America, "Technical Notes on Brick Constrution," most recent edition
b. Unless otherwise indicated on the Drawings, make the brickwork plumb, level, and true to line, with square angles and corners. Center brick in opening and press in place. c. Use line blocks whenever possible. When it is absolutely necessary to use a line pin, fill the hole immediately after the pin is withdrawn. d. Use only bricks that are clean and free from dust and other foreign matter. e. Lay in running bond unless otherwise shown on the Drawings or specifically indicated by Architect or Owner. f. Bed Joints: (1) Bevel all bed joints, sloping toward the center of the wall in such a manner that the bed joints will be completely filled when the brick is finally brought into line. (2) Do not furrow bed joints. (3) Lay all brick units within 1 minute of placing mortar (4) Avoid fins of bed joints protruding into cavity space. (a) (b) If they occur, leave in place if not projecting more than the bed joint thickness. Do not, in any case, cut off and drop into cavity space. (5) Lay masonry units within one minute of preparing bed joints. g. Head joints: (1) Fill completely to ensure full joint. (2) Butter end of brick prior to installation to ensure full joint. h. Do not move or shift bricks. If moved or shifted, review and lay again in fresh mortar. i. Immediately remove mortar from areas where they are not scheduled to be placed
3.3 JOINERY A. General: 1. Cut out and repoint defective joints. 2. On all joints exposed to the weather, tool and make smooth, solid, and watertight. Match existing joint profile and size, or as specified on the Drawings. B. Joint pattern: 3.4 PROTECTION 2. Match to existing of structure. A. At the completion of each working day, or when work is not in progress, cover top of all walls or masonry work with a waterproof membrane. 1. Membrane shall extend two feet down on each side of masonry and be securely anchored. 3.5 POINTING AND CLEANING A. At the completion of this portion of the Work, visually inspect the Work of this Section and point, or cut out the repointed if necessary, all holes and defective joints. B. Thoroughly clean all brick surfaces to be left exposed in the finished Work, removing all traces of mortar, grout, and foreign matter. In the event ordinary cleaning is not adequate, provide additional cleaning as so directed by Architect, and at no additional cost to the Owner. END OF SECTION
