Rain heads can be mid-mounted on a wall at a convenient height making them easy to access for cleaning. Rain heads protect the home by preventing gutters from blocking and flooding of eaves. They also remove a potential fire hazard. RAIN HEADS Leaf Eater The ultimate high performance rain head The Leaf Eater is the ultimate high performance rain head for use in heavy rainfall areas. Not only does it protect the home by preventing gutters from blocking and flooding of eaves, the Leaf Eater also improves water quality and reduces tank maintenance. The Leaf Eater is ideal for use purely as a debris removing device even when rainwater is not being collected.
The Leaf Eater is the ultimate high performance solution and was the first multi-screen rain head developed. Leaves and debris that build up in gutters can be flammable and represent a significant fire risk. By screening leaves onto the ground, the Leaf Eater prevents gutters from blocking and eliminates a fire hazard. How it works As water flows from the gutters it carries leaves and small pieces of debris. The Leaf Eater incorporates a flow directional gutter outlet which directs the flow of water onto the face of the primary screen. The water washes over this screen which has a 6mm aperture and is set at an angle to the horizontal of around 45. This angled screen is self-cleaning and forces the leaves and debris away allowing the water to continue through towards the secondary screen. The secondary stainless steel screen of 0.995mm aperture further filters the water and prevents mosquitoes and vermin from entering the pipe system to the water tank. Once the water passes through this insect proof screen it flows into the downpipes. How it is installed* The Leaf Eater is usually mounted directly under the roof gutter. A 170mm x 75mm rectangular gutter outlet comes with each Leaf Eater and provides an increased flow of water that is directed onto the angled primary screen. The Leaf Eater can also be mid-mounted on a wall at a convenient height to make it easier to access for cleaning. When mid-mounting, the gutter outlet is discarded and the entry downpipe is cut at 45, allowing 50mm clearance between the pipe and the primary screen. The Leaf Eater is a 80/90mm round dual fit rain head, and if other round or rectangular downpipes are in place, standard adaptors can be used. The main body of the all rain heads manufactured by Rain Harvesting Pty Ltd are made from lead-free PVC and can be painted to colour match and complement the home. For best results wash down with methylated/white spirit and spray with Colorbond paint. Leaf Beater The compact high performance rain head The Leaf Beater works like the Leaf Eater and is more compact making it ideal for use with under eaves tanks. The Leaf Beater features an integrated flow directional gutter outlet which directs the flow of water from the gutters onto an adjustable elliptical primary screen of 6mm aperture. This screen is virtually vertical enabling the action of the water to wash the screen and minimise maintenance. A secondary stainless steel screen is also included to keep mosquitoes and vermin out of downpipes in a wet system. With the removal of the secondary screen, the Leaf Beater is ideal for use purely as a debris removing device even when rainwater is not being collected. How it works An ingenious feature has been incorporated into the operation of the primary screen. Four settings can be applied to vary the angle at which the elliptical primary screen faces to adjust for various intensities of rainfall and amounts of debris. After observing the performance of the Leaf Beater, the screen can be adjusted until the best operating setting is achieved. How it is installed* The Leaf Beater is usually mounted directly under the roof gutter, however can be mid-mounted on a wall to make it easier to access for cleaning. The Leaf Beater range includes four variants and connects with PVC and metal downpipes. 1. For round downpipes 80/90mm dual fit and 100mm sizes, 2. For rectangular downpipes 100mm x 50mm and 100mm x 75mm sizes The angle of the primary screen on the Leaf Beater can be adjusted depending on the intensity of rainfall and the amount of debris in the area.
WET & DRY SYSTEMS Dry systems The pipe system runs direct from the gutter into the tank. The pipes drain out after rain and do not hold water when the rain stops. Dry systems are best because water sitting idle in pipes can become stagnant and provides a potential breeding ground for mosquitoes. You can remove the secondary stainless steel screen included with the Leaf Eater, Leaf Beater and Leaf Catcha rain heads in dry systems, and this will help them perform better. Note: In the case of the Leaf Eater, the secondary screen frame must be refitted for the primary screen to rest on. Leaf Catcha The versatile multi-screen rain head The Leaf Catcha is a versatile leaf and debris catcher with two horizontal internal screens. One is 6mm and the other stainless steel screen is 0.955mm to keep mosquitoes out. The Leaf Catcha is ideal for low rainfall, low leaf areas. The Leaf Catcha is available in popular Colorbond colours. The Leaf Catcha collects material in the main body of the rain head, is easily maintained, and is ideal for low leaf, low rainfall environments. How it works Rather than deflect leaves and debris away from the downpipe and onto the ground, the Leaf Catcha collects material from the gutter in the main body of the rain head. The two horizontal screens prevent leaves and debris from entering the downpipe system to the tank. To clean, simply lift out and empty and replace the rain head. How it is installed* The Leaf Catcha can be mounted directly under the roof gutter or mid-mounted. The Leaf Catcha is also an ideal catchment device for directing tank overflow water to stormwater pipes. The Leaf Catcha is a 90/100mm round dual fit rain head. Wet systems The pipes from the gutter go down the wall and underground and then up into the tank. Because the pipes are underground and below the entry point to the tank, even during periods without rainfall water remains in the pipes. Legislation broadly says that where pipes hold water they must be screened with a noncorrosive screen of not more than 1mm aperture to prevent the entry of mosquitoes and vermin. The Leaf Eater, Leaf Beater and Leaf Catcha rainheads include stainless steel screens to prevent mosquitoes and other pests accessing the pipe system and are designed to meet all legislative guidelines. Wet systems can be converted to dry by installing an in-ground water diverter that not only diverts the first flush of contaminated water from the roof, but also drains water from the underground pipe system on a sloping site. (Visit for more information). Fit Gutter Outlets Leaf Eater, Leaf Beater or Leaf Catcha Rain head with Insect Proof Secondary Screen to Downpipes. Underground pipes hold water continuously and never dry out. Mosquitoes will breed in the water pipe systems if each opening is not protected with a 1mm aperture screen. Fit Roof Gutters with appropriate fall Select either Downpipe, Post/Wall Mounted or In-Ground Water Diverters Fit insect proof screens or Flap Valves to inlet pipes to prevent mosquitoes from breeding in the wet system Aerobic Zone Anaerobic Zone 0.955mm Tank Screen Fit insect proof screens or Flap Valves to Tank Overflow Outlets which draw water from the Anaerobic Zone Water Storage Tank Ground Level
Gutter outlets fitted on the underside of the gutter make it easier for leaves, debris and sediments wash out. Dry gutters stay cleaner, last longer and eliminate mosquito breeding habitats. One of the most important fire prevention measures is to keep gutters clean. Rotting leaves make rainwater stored in tanks putrid. GUTTER OUTLETS Fitting Gutter Outlets Correctly Gutter outlets installed in the conventional way obstruct water flow Gutter outlets fitted in the conventional way cause rubbish to build up in roof gutters. Gutters start to rust because they are not able to drain out efficiently or dry out completely after rain. This creates a breeding habitat for disease carrying mosquitoes. In most instances gutter outlets are fitted by cutting a hole in the gutter, pushing an outlet through from the top side of the gutter, fixing it in place with a few rivets or screws, and then applying a silicone sealant around the top side of the gutter outlet within the gutter itself. This creates a barrier up to 4mm high for debris to jump and obstructs water flow.
The conventional way Rain Harvesting gutter outlets Rain Harvesting s Gutter Outlets Rain Harvesting has developed a complete range of lead free PVC gutter outlets that fit round, rectangular and half-round downpipes. These outlets are easy to install onto the underside of the gutter and will improve water flow, reduce maintenance and increase the life of gutters. The outlets come with a built in sealant groove. To fit: Cut a hole the desired size in the gutter, place some sealant in the sealant groove, push up into position. Drill a hole to insert rivets and INSERT THE RIVETS FROM INSIDE THE GUTTER to ensure there are NO SNAGS at the outlet. Wipe off excess sealant. Half-Round Gutter Outlets Half-Round Gutters are becoming popular because they flush far better than conventional square line or quad gutters. When there is only light rain and a small water flow, the flow of All gutter outlets should be fitted on the UNDERSIDE of the roof gutter so that there is no obstruction to stop leaves, debris and fine sediments washing out. This will ensure that within a short period of time after the rain stops gutters will drain out and dry out. By creating dry gutters a potential mosquito breeding habitat is eliminated. Dry gutters stay cleaner and last longer. 75/80mm and 100mm - for round downpipes 90mm Male & Female - for round downpipes 100x50mm and 100x75mm - for rectangular downpipes 90mm and 100mm - for half-round gutters Half-round gutters accelerate water flow, helping keep gutters clean water is concentrated within a small area at the bottom of the gutter. This accelerates the flow, and the faster the water flows, the better it carries fines and debris. With the same light water flow over the bottom of conventional gutters, the flow is virtually zero and no/minimal debris or fines is taken down the outlet and the gutter slowly blocks up. Extract from the BUILDING CODE OF AUSTRALIA Expl. Info. Amndt No.4 Stormwater drainage systems are NOT designed to remove all of the water during exceptionally heavy rain, especially in tropical areas. Accordingly, it is necessary to design and install the system so that when overflowing occurs any water is directed away in a manner which ensures it does not pond against, or enter into, the building. This may be achieved using slotting gutters, oversized gutters and downpipes, locating the gutter so it is below the top edge of the fascia or the installation of rainwater heads with overflow slots. The installation of downpipes, especially near valley gutters, are designed to ensure rainwater from areas on the roof that have concentrated water flows perform adequately. If downpipe spacings are to be increased, allowance for overflow should be considered. Consideration needs to be given to box gutters, valley gutters etc located above the internal areas of a building. If adequate overflow controls cannot be implemented there may be a need to increase the size and capacity of drainage components to remove all water anticipated during heavy rainfall periods.
Filter Pits eliminate the need for a tank screen on top of the tank and reduce contamination of tank water. They also reduce the amount of sunlight entering the tank and restrict the growth of algae and other bacteria. Filter Pits come in two sizes (700 x 700 x 700mm and 560 x 560 x 510mm) and come with a insect proof screen and optional junk baskets and pit rise extensions. Filter Pits handle large volumes of rainwater and enable screening to be done at a central point in the system. In some cases they can be safer and easier to clean than rain heads fitted at roof gutters. FILTER PITS* In some instances it is not practical to fit rain heads under roof gutters or on a wall to pre-filter water headed for the water tank. Filter Pits enable screening to be done at a pit which can be safer and easier to clean than cleaning the screens of rain heads fitted at the roof gutter. Filter Pits are extremely beneficial when used in conjunction with underground tanks or where tanks are placed downhill from the building. They are usually placed at a convenient spot in the garden, part way between the building and the tank and are a junction where the pipes from around the house meet, and from which the main pipe/s then connect to the storage tank. They handle large volumes of water and come standard with a 1mm insect proof stainless steel screen and an optional junk basket which incorporates a 6mm stainless steel screen. Filter Pits require a fall between the building and the top of the tank of at least 750mm depending on the distance of the pipe run between where the pipe enters the ground at the building and the tank. This system will enable the pipes to be connected directly into the wall of the tank which leaves the top of the tank free for other uses. Importantly, it eliminates the need for a tank screen on top of the tank. This prevents contamination of the tank water via the tank screen and reduces the amount of sunlight entering the tank thus minimising the growth of algae and other bacteria. Water Diverter/s should be installed down stream of the Filter Pit to prevent the first, most contaminated water, from entering the tank. Fine sediments may pass through the screen of the Filter Pit, and a Water Diverter will further improve water quality.
Install the complete Rain Harvesting system In addition to the Leaf Eater range of rain heads, Rain Harvesting Pty Ltd manufactures: Blue Mountain Mesh an all steel, fire proof gutter solution that helps prevent leaves and debris entering gutters.
