3 PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.01 PREPARATION A. Do not install covering before piping and equipment has been tested and approved. B. Ensure surface is clean and dry prior to installation. Ensure insulation is dry before and during application INSTALLATION A. Install insulation in accordance with manufacturer's instructions. B. Provide premolded insulation on all fittings, expansion loops, flanges, strainers, and valves and finish with premolded PVC fitting covers. Maintain vapor barrier integrity. C. Finish insulation neatly at hangers, supports and other protrusions. Refer to Section D. Locate cover seams on insulation in least visible locations. E. Do not insulate flexible connections and expansion joints, except on chilled water systems. F. Terminate insulation neatly with mastic troweled on bevel. G. Cover cold piping fittings and valves with equivalent thickness of insulation material. Seal lap joints with 100% coverage of vapor barrier and adhesive. Seal butt joints with 4" wide strips of vapor barrier sealed with vapor barrier adhesive. Cover unions, flanges, couplings, etc., with premolded insulated PVC fitting covers. H. Cover hot piping fittings and valves up to bonnets with equivalent thickness of insulation material. Cover unions, flanges, couplings, etc., with premolded insulated PVC fitting covers. I. Cover refrigerant piping, fitting, and valves up to bonnets with equivalent thickness of insulation material. Apply with edges tightly butted. Seal joints with vapor barrier sealer.
4 J. Equipment shall have insulation applied with edges tightly butted, joints staggered and secured in place by steel bands. Where necessary, provide suitable pin anchors welded in place. Provide sufficient clearance around openings for normal operation of equipment. Finish hot surface insulation with 1" galvanized hexagonal mesh and coat with hydraulic setting insulation cement. Finish cold surface insulation joints with 4" wide strips of vapor barrier tape sealed with vapor barrier adhesive. Finish insulation with heavy coat of vapor barrier mastic applied over whole body. K. Repair separation of joints and cracking of insulation caused by thermal movement or poor workmanship. L. Insulate pump bodies with material compatible with respective systems for which insulation is specified. Provide removable pump insulation boxes. M. Where insulation requires sealing and taping, complete required procedure at the same time insulating material is applied to assure clean surfaces exist for proper adhesion. N. Cinch staples shall be permitted only in accordance with insulation installation instructions. Cover all staples with vapor barrier mastic. O. Insulate all chilled water system appurtenances so that no condensation forms, i.e, drain lines, sensing lines, thermometer stems, etc. P. Handicap Lavatory: 1. Insulate all exposed piping below lavatory with 1/2" thick Manville "Aerotube" elastomeric pipe insulation. color. 2. Insulate "P"-Trap with remolded insulation, white or off-white
5 3.03 INSULATION THICKNESS SCHEDULE Piping and Equipment Pipe Sizes Inches Insulation Thickness Inches Domestic hot water and hot water return piping Up to 1-1/2" 2" & over 1" 1-1/2" Condenser water piping exposed to weather All Sizes 1/2" Refrigerant suction piping All Sizes 1/2" A. "Runouts" are piping that is 12' -0" long or less, and that is connected to fixtures or individual terminal units. B. "Branches, Mains, or Loops" are circulating piping and piping that is over 12'-0" long connected to fixtures or individual terminal units. C. Insulation thickness in above table is based on materials have thermal resistance in the range of R-4.0 to 4.6/in. For materials with thermal resistance less than R-4.0/in, the minimum insulation thickness shall be determined as follows: 4.0 x Above table thickness Actual R = New Minimum Thickness For materials with thermal resistance more than R = 4.6/in, the minimum insulation thickness shall be permitted to be reduced as follows: 4.6 x Above table thickness Actual R = New Minimum Thickness **END OF SECTION**
