Course Description This presentation, by an employee of the California Division of the State Architect (DSA, the jurisdiction over for all public K-12 schools and community colleges in the state) will cover state code provisions and design considerations that designers should be aware of for wood school projects in California. Also covered will be lessons learned from DSA construction oversight that can help professionals successfully design and build wood schools. DIVISION OF THE STATE ARCHITECT 4
Learning Objectives 1. Identify the authority having jurisdiction over public K- 12 schools and community colleges in the State of California. 2. Know the source for and be able to find code provisions applicable to projects under the authority of CA DSA. 3. Understand how product approvals can be used to allow proprietary connectors and components for wood construction in California wood school projects. 4. Be familiar with the plan approval and construction certification process for California wood school projects. DIVISION OF THE STATE ARCHITECT 5

Design and Detailing Issues
Design and Detailing Issues Sill Plates Sill plate thickness need not exceed a 2x Gymnasium walls may have 2x10 sill plate Anchor bolt placement critical Consider out-of-plane wind Option 1 Option 2 DIVISION OF THE STATE ARCHITECT 38
Design and Detailing Issues Sill Plates Anchor bolt layout at double sided shear walls Stagger anchor bolts or use large plate washer Option 1 Option 2 DIVISION OF THE STATE ARCHITECT 39
Design and Detailing Issues Sill Plates Sill plate thickness? While SDPWS permits 2x sill plates, should consider 3x for thick walls or closely spaced edge nailing. DIVISION OF THE STATE ARCHITECT 40
Design and Detailing Issues Inelastic Behavior When are amplified seismic loads (Ω o E) required for light-frame wood construction? Members supporting discontinuous shear walls Not required for hold-down, hold-down post, sill plate shear transfer, or collectors DIVISION OF THE STATE ARCHITECT 41
Design and Detailing Issues Inelastic Behavior Should consider a capacity design approach or amplified seismic loads (Ω o E) where discrete elements transfer seismic loads and there is limited redundancy and reliability is critical Force the ductile mechanism (fuse) to occur in the shear wall that has the ductile capacity All other material design standards have migrated to this approach DIVISION OF THE STATE ARCHITECT 42
Design and Detailing Issues Forcetransfer Shear Wall Design (SDPWS section 4.3.5) Maximum wall pier aspect ratio 2:1, up to 3.5:1 with shear capacity reduction No maximum spandrel aspect ratio Recommend using same limits as piers. DIVISION OF THE STATE ARCHITECT 43
Design and Detailing Issues Force-transfer Shear Wall Design Piers in walls with long aspect ratio spandrels behave like full-height wall segments Pier Moment Diagrams Force-transfer Deep Spandrel Shallow Spandrel Full-height wall segment No Spandrel DIVISION OF THE STATE ARCHITECT 44
Design and Detailing Issues Engineered Lumber Minimum nailing spacing into edge of LVL, PSL, and LSL shall be per evaluation report Typically more restrictive than sawn lumber Review edge nailing for: Diaphragm edge nail spacing Manufactured strap nail spacing Manufactured framing angle clips into I-joist flanges DIVISION OF THE STATE ARCHITECT 45
Design and Detailing Issues Engineered Lumber DIVISION OF THE STATE ARCHITECT 46
Design and Detailing Issues Double Top Plate Alignment Double top plate is typically the collector and diaphragm chord, need to align vertically on same wall line (e.g. change in detailing, recessed floor) DIVISION OF THE STATE ARCHITECT 47
Design and Detailing Issues Floor/Roof Framing Parallel to Wall Limit mid-span deflection of framing parallel to wall, especially for long spans Uneven floor Disrupt roof drainage Solution: change framing direction for 2-3 bays, use double truss DIVISION OF THE STATE ARCHITECT 48
Design and Detailing Issues Out-of-Plane Connections Check alignment and load path for out-ofplane wind load connections DIVISION OF THE STATE ARCHITECT 49
Design and Detailing Issues Tall Parapets Provide out-of-plane connections at each balloon framed stud unless stud is capable of spanning to top of parapet bypassing roof. Top of Parapet Roof Span Span Span Ground Option 1 Option 2 DIVISION OF THE STATE ARCHITECT 50
Design and Detailing Issues King Post Support at Opening When studs are balloon framed, provide specific king post-to-roof connection detail at large openings for out-of-plane wind loads. Ledger DIVISION OF THE STATE ARCHITECT 51
Product Acceptance
Product Acceptance General DSA accepts product evaluation reports from the following: DSA IR A-5 ICC ES, IAPMO ES, etc that are ISO Guide certified OSHPD (Hospitals in CA) OPM, OSP, OPD COLA RR (City of Los Angeles Research Reports) Miami-Dade County NOA DIVISION OF THE STATE ARCHITECT 53
Product Acceptance General Design values for products resisting seismic forces: DSA IR A-5 Cyclically tested: 100% of listed value Statically tested: 80% of listed value DIVISION OF THE STATE ARCHITECT 54
Product Acceptance General DSA may further limit product use due to the following: DSA IR A-5 If Acceptance Criteria is not based on national consensus standard Product shall comply with CBC, DSA IR s Bulletin, etc Pre-manufactured seismic force-resisting systems (SFRS) or components not listed in ASCE 7 Table DIVISION OF THE STATE ARCHITECT 55
Product Acceptance Prefabricated Wood Connectors Prefabricated Wood Connectors DSA IR 23-1 Requires valid evaluation report Listed values adjusted per DSA IR A-5 80% 100% DIVISION OF THE STATE ARCHITECT 56
Product Acceptance Pre-manufactured SFRS Determine seismic performance factors: FEMA P695 determine factors for the system FEMA P795 or equivalent demonstrate product is equivalent to an ASCE 7 SFRS Discourage use of some components: High aspect ratio components act like a cantilever column with R=6.5 vs 1.25 vs 2.5 Unconventional yielding mechanism Acceptance Criteria may be limiting Generally limit use to discrete areas, not entire vertical SFRS elements DIVISION OF THE STATE ARCHITECT 57
Construction Oversight Lessons Learned
Construction Oversight Coordination with MEP & Arch. Paramount to a successful wood project SE should coordinate directly with MEP SE should generally understand routing of utilities in the building and below ground (e.g. electrical room = conduits below ground) SE should generally understand how the system works (e.g. fan coil / condenser) Perform regular site visits during construction DIVISION OF THE STATE ARCHITECT 59

Construction Oversight Coordination with MEP & Arch. Provide typical notching and hole details specific to project design ( (3), ( (2)) Provide plumbing chases (double walls) DIVISION OF THE STATE ARCHITECT 63
Construction Oversight Clear and Concise Drawings Construction documents need to be clear and concise Details, details, details! There are typically no shop drawings in wood construction Consider knowledge and ability of contractor They generally do not understand many of the concepts in seismic design (e.g. load paths) Don t resort to they ll figure it out in the field, chances are they will and the solution may not be what was intended.
