Primary Resource Description: This one-and-a-half-story, three-bay, stuccoed frame Craftsman-style dwelling rests on a parged concrete foundation. Constructed ca. 1920, the house has a gabled roof clad in asphalt shingles with a central, front, gable-roofed dormer that contains a ten-light attic window and weatherboard siding. The house features large, 7/1-segmentally-arched-sash, Prairie-style, front windows; 6/1- sash windows on the side elevations, louvered shutters, overhanging eaves with triangular knee braces, and exposed rafter ends. The integral, three-bay, front porch has square wooden posts and plain pickets. A hip-roofed, stuccoed wing with a central-interior brick chimney extends off the rear of the house and a gable-roofed addition with Masonite siding projects off the rear of the hipped roof wing. A concrete walkway leads from the sidewalk on Robertson to the front door. A gravel driveway is located on the west side of the house and it heads straight back towards the garage. A privacy fence encloses the backyard. Small shrubs landscape the lot. Secondary Site Description: A garage is placed northwest of the house. Primary Resource Description: Constructed ca. 1928, this one-and-a-half-story, three-bay, asymmetrical, stretcherbond-brick, Craftsman bungalow rests on a stuccoed foundation. The dwelling has a gable roof clad in asphalt shingles and front and rear shed dormers with wood shingles as siding and exposed rafter ends. The house features six-light basement windows, 4/1-sash double-hung wood windows, a front bay window with a central 4/1- sash flanked by 2/1- sash windows, a Craftsman-style front door with sidelights and a transom, and segmental arches over the window and door openings. The house has overhanging eaves with triangular knee braces, exposed rafter ends, wood shingle in the gable ends, and two central-interior brick chimneys with corbelled caps. A concrete walkway leads from the sidewalk on Robertson to the front door. A gravel driveway is located west of the house and it heads back towards the shed. Primary Resource Description: Constructed ca. 1926, this one-and-a-half-story, three-bay, Craftsman-style dwelling is of stretcher-bond brick and rests on a brick foundation. The house has a hipped roof clad in asphalt shingles with a projecting front bay window that has its own hipped roof. Hip-roofed dormers are also found on the east and west sides of the roof. The house contains double- and triple-4/1-sash double-hung wood windows, a paneled front door with lights, segmental arches over the windows and doors, overhanging eaves, and a semi- exterior-end brick chimney with a corbelled cap. The two-bay, front porch with hipped roof extension has square posts and a solid brick balustrade, both with concrete caps. A shed-roofed wing with an enclosed porch extends off the rear. It features basement and modern, vinyl 6/6-sash double-hung windows, overhanging eaves, and a semi-exterior-end brick chimney with a corbelled cap. A concrete walkway leads from the street to the front door and a second brick walkway leads from the front door to the gravel driveway east of the house. A white picket fence lines the north side of the backyard and a wire fence is used to surround the remaining sides. Mature trees and small bushes landscape the lot. Secondary Site Description: A garage is placed northeast of the house. Primary Resource Description: Constructed ca. 1930, this one-story, three-bay, gable-end, frame Craftsman bungalow rests on a raised, stucco foundation. The well-preserved stuccoed dwelling has asphalt-shingle roofing, paired 6-light attic windows in the front gable end, 12/1-sash windows on the façade, 6/1-sash double-hung windows on the sides and rear, an eight-light Craftsman-style front door, overhanging eaves, exposed rafter ends. Both the centralinterior and the exterior-end brick chimneys have corbelled caps. The single-bay, gabled front porch has false timbering in its pediment, exposed rafter ends, square posts, and a three-rail balustrade. Significance Statement: This well-preserved, one-story, gable-end Craftsman-style dwelling was constructed ca and may be a kit house. Primary Resource Description: Constructed ca. 1910, this one-and-a-half-story, three-bay, Craftsman-style bungalow is built of brick laid in a seven-course American-bond pattern. Resting on a brick foundation with four- light basement windows, the house has a gable roof clad in standing seam metal and large, front and rear shed- roofed dormers clad in modern cedar siding and containing 6/1-sash windows. Other details include a full-light, glass front door, two front bay windows consisting of a central 6/1-sash window framed on either side by 4/1-sash, 6/1-sash windows on the rest of the house, overhanging eaves, exposed rafter ends, and an exterior-end brick chimney. The three-bay front porch has brick posts resting on brick piers and a plain picket balustrade. A shed- roofed porch extends off the rear. Secondary Resource Description: Garage: This ca. 1920, gable-end garage has weatherboard siding and a sliding garage door. Significance Statement: One of many Craftsman-style dwellings along Robertson Avenue, this one appears to be one of the earliest. Resting on a brick foundation, it has a gable roof clad in asphalt shingles and a gable-roofed, stuccoed front dormer with triple 6x6 casement windows. Details include a central, Craftsman-style front door, 4/1-sash double-hung windows, jack arches over openings, overhanging eaves, and an exterior-end brick chimney with a corbelled cap. The integral, two-bay, segmental- arched, front porch has concrete stairs framed by an elegant curving brick balustrade and stucco supports resting on brick piers. A shed-roofed, one-story rectangular bay projects off the structure s west side. A concrete walkway leads from the street to a concrete stoop framed by short brick piers at the corners. A short, gravel driveway is located west of the house. A wire fence lines the southwest and west sides of the backyard and a picket fence has been placed in front of the wire on the southwest side for decoration. Mature trees and small boxwoods landscape the lot. Secondary Site Description: A garage is placed north of the house. Primary Resource Description: Constructed ca. 1930, this well-preserved, one-story, three-bay, frame, vernacular Craftsman-style dwelling rests on a parged concrete foundation. This relatively unaltered house has a jerkinhead roof clad in asphalt shingles and weatherboard siding with corner boards. It features single and paired 6/1-sash double-hung and four-light casement wood windows, a multi-light front door with five-light sidelights, overhanging eaves, exposed rafter ends, rectangular attic vents in the gable-ends, and an exterior-end brick chimney with a corbelled cap that breaks through the eaves. The front entry has a concrete stoop with brick piers at the corners and a round, arched hood with exposed rafters supported by triangular knee braces. A rear, projecting wing has a gable roof, a multi-light paneled door, and a modern deck. Secondary Resource Description: Garage: This gable-end garage has corrugated metal siding and roofing and exposed rafter ends. Significance Statement: This relatively unaltered, one-story, jerkinhead-roofed Craftsman-style dwelling was constructed ca and may be a kit house. 9 116 ROBERTSON AVENUE 116 Robertson Avenue DHR RESOURCE NUMBER: Primary: Double/Duplex (non-contributing) DATE/PERIOD: 1968 Vernacular Site Description: This brick duplex faces north on Robertson Avenue and is placed further back from the street than the adjacent dwellings. Two gravel driveways are located in front with a concrete walk that leads to the stoop in front of the two central front doors. A single tree decorates the front yard. There are no secondary resources. Secondary Site Description: No secondary structures. Primary Site Description: Constructed in 1968, this two-story, four-bay, symmetrical, brick-veneered vernacular duplex is comprised of two identical bays with the doors in the center. The gabled roof is clad in asphalt shingle, the foundation is brick-veneered, and the vinyl windows are one-over-one- sash. A Colonial Revival treatment of this otherwise vernacular building is found in the raised brick quoin treatment at the corners as well as the plain wood frieze. Secondary Resource Description: N/A Significant Statement: This 1968, vernacular brick-veneered duplex with some Colonial Revival-style detailing was constructed outside the period of the significance of the Fry s Spring Historic District so it is therefore a non-contributing resource.

10 118 ROBERTSON AVENUE 118 Robertson Avenue DHR RESOURCE NUMBER: DATE/PERIOD: 1945 Colonial Revival Site Description: Located on the south side of Robertson Avenue, this house is placed at an average setback and level grade. A concrete walk leads from the sidewalk to the dwelling and a graveled drive extends the length of the west end of the building. Various bushes and mature trees grace the front yard. There are no secondary resources. Secondary Site Description: No secondary structures. Primary Site Description: Constructed in 1945, this two-story, two-bay, frame Colonial Revival-style dwelling is clad in asbestos siding and is characterized by a second-story cantilevered overhang that is typical of garrison-type forms of this style. The house rests on a poured concrete foundation and has a side gabled roof with a central brick chimney. A recessed one-bay, two-story diminutive wing extends off the west end. The vinyl windows are six-over-six- sash with wooden batten shutters. The concrete stoop is in front of the six-paneled wood door with a Colonial Revival door surround with flat pilasters supporting a plain entablature. A two-story gabled wing extends to the rear. Secondary Resource Description: N/A Significant Statement: This is a well-preserved example of a garrison-type form of the Colonial Revival. It was constructed in 1945 and is therefore a contributing resource in the Fry s Spring Historic District in the area of Architecture. It is listed in the 1957 Charlottesville City Directory as being occupied by Ernest A. Roughton, an instructor at the Jefferson School of Commerce, and his wife Lucille, a clerk at the UVA hospital.

It features 6/1-sash double-hung wood windows, overhanging eaves, exposed rafter ends, front and rear shed dormers with asbestos shingle siding, and an exterior-end, stuccoed chimney with a brick stack. The two-bay, front porch has battered posts on stuccoed piers and a plain balustrade. A screened-in porch with a shed roof extends off the rear. Secondary Resource Description: Shed: This ca. 1930, gable-end shed has plyboard and batten siding, a roof clad in v-crimp metal, exposed rafter ends, and a rear lean-to. 12 201 ROBERTSON AVENUE 201 Robertson Avenue DHR RESOURCE NUMBER: DATE/PERIOD: 1948 Minimal Traditional Site Description: Located on the north side of Robertson Avenue, this dwelling is built into a slightly banked site with an average setback and level grade. A gravel drive is located west of the house with a concrete walk that leads to the backyard. A concrete porch and flagstone walk lead from the house to the road. Various trees decorate the yard. There are no secondary resources. Secondary Site Description: No secondary structures. Primary Site Description: Constructed in 1948, this one-story, three-bay, concrete block Minimal Traditional has a cross-gable form. There is a full concrete block basement story accessible on the sides and in the back because the house is built into a banked site. Aluminum siding is placed in the gable ends and the wood windows are six-over-six sash, one with vinyl louvered shutters. The one-bay, shed-roofed front porch has square brick columns and wooden railing. The exterior concrete block chimney is placed along the front façade, west of the door and incorporated into the front porch, and has a brick cap and brick shoulders. Secondary Resource Description: N/A Significant Statement: This concrete block Minimal Traditional was constructed in 1948 and is therefore a contributing resource in the Fry s Spring Historic District in the area of Architecture. It is listed in the 1957 Charlottesville City Directory as being occupied by Mrs. Ashley H. Mawyer, a credit manager at HM Gleason & Co, and a widow of Peter Mawyer.

13 202 ROBERTSON AVENUE 202 Robertson Avenue DHR RESOURCE NUMBER: DATE/PERIOD: 1958 Ranch Secondary: Shed (non-contributing) Site Description: Located on the south side of Robertson Avenue, this house is placed at an average setback and level grade. A paved driveway in front leads to the carport on the west end of the house. A concrete walk leads from the driveway to the front stoop. A wooden picket fence surrounds the front yard which has various attractive ornamental plantings scattered throughout. A shed is located in the rear yard. Secondary Site Description: N/A Primary Site Description: Constructed in 1958, this one-story, four-bay, brick-veneered Minimal Ranch has an integral one-bay carport with metal supports that are styled to resemble I-beams. The side-gable roof is clad in asphalt shingles and the concrete foundation is brick veneered. An exterior brick chimney is located on the east end of the house. Triangular attic vents are located in the gable ends as are returns for the plain wood friezeboard. The foundation is brick veneered and the front stoop is brick with wrought iron railing. The vinyl windows are single and paired one-over-onesash. A bay window comprised of a large central light flanked by one-over-one-vinyl sash is located east of the front door. Secondary Resource Description: A ca. 1980, one-story, gable-roofed, prefabricated frame shed with T-111 and asphalt shingle roofing is located in the far corner of the backyard. Significant Statement: This 1958 brick-veneered Minimal Ranch is a contributing resource in the Fry s Spring Historic District in the area of Architecture. According to the 1960 City Directory is it was the home of Hansford L. Pace, a plasterer, and his wife Alma.

14 203 ROBERTSON AVENUE 203 Robertson Avenue DHR RESOURCE NUMBER: Primary: Single Dwelling (non-contributing) DATE/PERIOD: 2014 No discernible style Site Description: Currently under construction, this house is on the north side of Robertson Avenue. The original house burned in the early 2010s and a new house is being constructed on the site. The property is surrounded by a three-rail fence and contains a few mature bushes and trees, primarily along the perimeter of the property. There are no secondary resources. Secondary Site Description: No secondary structures. Primary Site Description: The house on this site, a ca dwelling, burned in the early 2010s and a new two-story house is currently (2014) being constructed on the site. Secondary Resource Description: N/A Significant Statement: The original ca house on this site is no longer standing as it burned. A new two-story frame house is being constructed and is non-contributing in the Fry s Spring Historic District. The original house was listed in the 1957 Charlottesville City Directory as being occupied by Raymond E. Sisson, inspector at Smith and Lamb, and his wife Mignon C. Also living in the household is Raymond Sisson Jr. of the United States Navy and his wife Vivian, a saleswoman at Woolworths.

16 205 ROBERTSON AVENUE 205 Robertson Avenue DHR RESOURCE NUMBER: Primary: Single Dwelling (non-contributing) Secondary: Garage (non-contributing) DATE/PERIOD: circa 1920 Vernacular (remodeled) Site Description: Facing south on Robertson Avenue, this two-story dwelling is placed at an average setback and level grade. A privet hedge lines the front property line and a concrete walk leads to the front porch. The rear yard is encircled by a wood picket fence. A gravel driveway is located west of the house and leads to a garage shed. Secondary Site Description: N/A Primary Site Description: Originally constructed in 1920 but remodeled in the mid-2000s, this two-story, three-bay, vernacular frame dwelling is clad in Hardi-plank siding and has an asphalt-shingled, side-gabled roof with overhanging eaves. Resting on a parged foundation, the house has been heavily renovated and enlarged. The vinyl six-over-six-sash windows are all new, with paired ones on the first floor façade, as is the exterior metal flue, the wide corner boards, the fascia, and the double-leaf front door. The four-bay, shed-roofed front porch has a concrete floor and battered posts on brick piers. Secondary Resource Description: This ca. 1950, one-bay, gable-end frame garage is clad in corrugated metal siding and roofing and has a modern overhead garage door. Because of the loss of integrity due to the many changes to the original exterior materials, the building is considered a non-contributing resource. Significant Statement: Although constructed in ca. 1920, within the period of significance of the Fry s Spring Historic District, this house is considered non-contributing because of the degree of additions and alterations that make the house no longer reflect that period. It is listed in the 1957 Charlottesville City Directory as being occupied by Alpha J. Miller Jr. a manager at Miller s Electric Repair and his wife Mildred S.

17 206 ROBERTSON AVENUE 206 Robertson Avenue DHR RESOURCE NUMBER: DATE/PERIOD: 1957 Colonial Revival Site Description: Located on the south side of Robertson Avenue, this dwelling is placed at an average setback and level grade. Given that this house is built on a bank, there is a rear basement entry. A concrete walk leads from the front stoop to the sidewalk and another is located from the driveway back to the rear basement entry to the house. There are a few mature bushes and ornamental trees in the front yard. There are no secondary resources. Secondary Site Description: No secondary structures. Primary Site Description: Constructed in 1957, this one-story, three-bay, brick-veneered Minimal Traditional has a gabled, asphalt shingle roof with triangular louvered attic vents in the gable ends. It is transitional from the Minimal Traditional to the Minimal Ranch style. The exterior-end brick chimney has one shoulder and a corbelled cap. The brick stoop has wrought iron railing and is protected by the overhanging eaves. A Colonial Revival-style door surround has fluted Doric pilasters. The wood windows are six-over-six-sash although there is a twelve-over-twelve-sash on the front that acts as a bay window. Small basement windows in brick wells are also evident on the front and the brick-veneered basement is more evident on the sides and rear because of the banked site. A hipped-roofed screened porch, a gabled brick wing, and shed dormer are found on the rear of the house. Secondary Resource Description: N/A Significant Statement: This brick-veneered Minimal Traditional/Minimal Ranch was constructed in 1957 and is therefore a contributing resource in the Fry s Spring Historic District in the area of Architecture. A bay window next to the front door is comprised of a single pane flanked by four-over-four-sash windows. The house is built into a banked site so that the brick-veneered basement is full story in the rear and contains three-by-three-steel casements. Secondary Site Description: N/A Primary Site Description: Constructed in 1935, this is one-and-a-half-story, three-bay Cape Cod-style frame dwelling has vinyl siding and a parged concrete block foundation. The gabled, asphalt-shingled roof has triangular louvered vents at the gable ends and two gable-roofed dormers that may be later additions. The rear contains a large shed-roofed dormer.
