Section 11 This section highlights the key points relating to Fire Stopping. It is imperative that sites teams understand the importance of fire stopping and check it is completed correctly. It is to be read in conjunction with the relevant project information, specification and standard details. For apartments in particular review the most recent versions of the following: Fire Stopping Trade Specification Fire Stopping Installation Checklist SIG Fire Protection Guidance Project Specific Fire Strategy Project Specific Working Drawings 11

11 IN MASONRY HOUSING Provision of Fire Stops in External Cavity Walls All separating / party walls / boxed eaves of separating walls are to be fire stopped with mineral wool quilt to semi-detached and terraced plots. Walls are to be constructed up to underside of roof covering with the external cavity being fire-stopped at vertical junctions and sloping sections from eaves of the party wall, fully-filled with cavity sock edge sealing. At party wall / external wall junctions 300mm polythene sleeved mineral wool quilt/rigid batt to be covered with a 350mm vertical DPC. 11-1
11 IN MASONRY HOUSING Provision of Fire Stops at Eaves The top of the cavity must be closed with a continuous 100mm PVC sleeved mineral wool fire stop. This must be adhered to at eaves level to the perimeter of every relevant plot. A break must be created in the partial fill insulation board the insulation board must not run continuous. See Standard Details BH-SD05-### for Barratt housetypes and DW-SD05-### for David Wilson housetypes. 11-2
11 IN MASONRY HOUSING Party wall spandrel panels Ensure party wall spandrel panels are bedded on 3no strips of intumescent mastic, and the cavity is closed with a wire reinforced mineral wool fire blanket or approved equivalent. The top of party wall spandrel panel to be packed with wire reinforced mineral wool fire blanket. Ensure spandrel panel covering is double boarded with joints staggered. Joints between panels to be filled with intumescent mastic. See page 4-5 and Standard Details DB-SD and DB-SD Cavity closed with a wire reinforced mineral wool fire blanket or approved equivalent. 11-3
11 IN MASONRY HOUSING Provision of Fire Stops from eaves to ridge The top of party wall spandrel panel to be packed with wire reinforced mineral wool fire blanket below the breather membrane. In addition fire stopping mineral wool must be installed between battens above the breather membrane, this must continue down to the eaves, where it must be carefully cut to fully seal the box eaves. See NHBC Standards
11 - FIRE DOOR DETAILING Fire Door Detailing Fire doors must be specified, detailed, installed and certificated correctly. Standard height fire doors are to be hung on 1.5 pairs x 75mm butt hinges. Flat entrance and personnel doors between the house and integral garage require a perko door closer. Rockwool acoustic intumescent sealant should be used to seal around the fire door frame. Plasterboard needs to be staggered over the door head, with the joint finished with Gyproc joint tape applied on skim sites. See Standard Detail DB-SD Fire Door 11-5
11 - DOWNLIGHTS Downlights must be supplied by the Group approved supplier and installed to the required Standard Detail. DB-SD has been produced clarifying the correct supplier specification and installation method. Care must be taken to avoid clashes with joists and other services. This specification and detail is applicable where Downlights are fitted as standard, as a purchaser upgrade and in Sales Offices. DOWNLIGHTERS MUST NOT BE INSTALLED IN LIGHT BOXES 11-6
11 - HOUSING Stairs Where stair strings are exposed and the stair forms part of a protected stairwell which has an enclosed utility room or cupboard beneath it, or forms part of a ceiling to a habitable room a factory applied intumescent paint is required to the inside face of both stair strings. The paint is tinted pink to enable ready identification on site. Refer to stair manufacturer for further guidance. Ceiling Plasterboard Ensure 15mm standard plasterboard is utilised for all intermediate floors in single dwelling masonry houses, as long as 15mm board is utilised perimeter noggins can be omitted. For apartments refer to the project specific details relating to the floor build up and construction utilised. SVP boxings Ensure all SVP boxings are double boarded and soil pipes wrapped in at least 25mm sound deadening insulation. Pipe Clips to be screwed to wall. Boxing framework is to be sealed to blockwork with mastic prior to plasterboard. 11-7
11 IN MASONRY APARTMENTS THE CONTRACTOR MUST BE ACCREDITED TO ONE OF THE FOLLOWING FIRE PROTECTION SCHEMES: FIRAS LPCB IFC Masonry separating floors Plastic pipes of sizes 32mm up to 168mm outside diameter are to be protected by Ultra Universal Pipe Wrap or, Rockwool Firestop Pipe Collars or, Rockwool Insulated Fire Sleeves. Plastic pipes of sizes 168mm to 250mm are to be protected by Rockwool Firestop Collars. Once wrapped around the plastic pipe and sealed with Ultra Tape, the pipe is then slid into the aperture. The rest of the opening is to be filled with either Rockwool Acoustic sealant or Rockwool Firestop Compound. Installation procedure: i. Make good floor around plastic pipe with either Rockwool Acoustic Intumescent Sealant or Rockwool Firestop Compound. ii. Undo the toggle clip on the Rockwool Firestop Pipe Collar and open it out. iii. Slide the Rockwool Firestop Pipe Collar, with its fixing tabs pointing up towards the face of the soffit, around the plastic pipe. iv. Lock the Rockwool Firestop Pipe Collar around the pipe closing the toggle clip. Push the Rockwool Firestop Pipe Collar back on to the soffit. v. Fix the Rockwool Firestop Pipe Collar to the soffit by means of 32mm long steel self-tapping screws, through the fixing tabs. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT NO MIXING AND MATCHING OF MANUFACTURERS PRODUCTS IS ALLOWED WHEN INSTALLING IN MASONRY APARTMENTS ALL APARTMENT FIRESTOPPING TO BE RECORDED Refer to the Fire Stopping Trade Specification Section 21
11 IN MASONRY APARTMENTS Plasterboard Ensure the correct specification of plasterboard is used on fire rated walls, and it is taken the full height of the wall. This includes above suspended ceilings and below floating floors. Ventilation Ductwork The Contractor is to provide a fire duct system to ensure fire protection, thermal and acoustic insulation for circular and rectangular ductwork. Three products are available in the Rockwool Fire Duct range for providing protection to steel ventilation ducts; Rockwool Fire Duct Slab for rectangular ducts; Rockwool Fire Duct Section for circular ducts between 60mm and 356mm diameter; Rockwool Fire Duct PSM for circular ducts greater than 406mm diameter. All three products are supplied faced on one side with reinforced aluminium foil. 11-9
