2 As the world population increases, demand grows for improved infrastructure and more efficient and sustainable ways of living. As a consequence, the opportunities for qualified Civil and Structural Engineering graduates are rewarding, numerous and varied. Civil and structural engineering combines subjects such as mathematics, physics, chemistry, geography and design with a creative approach to problem solving. Our graduates have the opportunity to work on projects around the world, building anything from bridges and stadiums to water and power supply systems. Top 5 reasons to study Civil and Structural Engineering at Heriot-Watt: 1. Ranked no. 1 in Scotland and in the top 3 in the UK according to the National Student Survey ( ), and ranked no. 1 in the UK by the Guardian University League Table (2015) % of our 2012/13 graduates found employment or went on to further study, with 91.4% of those in employment going straight into graduate level jobs. 3. All programmes are accredited by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) and the Institution of Structural Engineers (for more details, see 4. Excellent links with industry, offering advice, guidance and work placement opportunities. 5. Staff expertise includes world-leading research in flood management, geomechanics, civil engineering materials, structures and high-speed rail infrastructure. Programme Information The Civil and Structural Engineering discipline offers three undergraduate programmes, two of which include the option to study abroad for a year. Each programme can either be studied over four years to attain a BEng (Hons) qualification or over five years to achieve MEng status. Students have the flexibility to swap between programmes, and between BEng/ MEng, up until the start of the third year in all cases and even the start of the fourth year in some cases. All students take part in a fourth year interdisciplinary design project, which is a chance to apply knowledge and skills acquired during the programme and demonstrate the ability to work with other built environment professionals. Civil Engineering BEng (Hons), MEng This programme encompasses the main civil engineering disciplines of transport engineering, water engineering, geotechnics, materials and structural design. The programme provides students with the key analytical and practical skills necessary to become a Chartered Civil Engineer. Structural Engineering BEng (Hons), MEng Our Structural Engineering programme shares common courses with Civil Engineering during the first three years. The programme then focuses on more specialised areas of design such as the use of composite materials in structural design and finite element analysis. Structural Engineering with Architectural Design BEng (Hons), MEng The first two years of this programme share common courses with Civil Engineering. The remainder of the programme focuses on structural engineering and issues relevant to architectural design. Teaching and Assessment Teaching involves a mix of lectures, tutorials, guided study, group projects and practical activities, including design studio and laboratory work, computing, fieldwork and site visits. Assessment methods include end-ofcourse examinations and coursework assignments. Study Abroad and Work Experience Study Abroad Students of the MEng in Civil Engineering and the MEng in Structural Engineering can spend their fourth year studying at a university abroad. Wherever students choose to study, all of the courses are taught in English and are selected to complement those offered at Heriot-Watt University. Students are encouraged to experience the culture and language of the host country and institution. In addition to the year-long exchange opportunities, eligible students on the Civil Engineering programmes also have the opportunity to study for one or two semesters at Heriot-Watt s Dubai Campus. Work Experience We offer a number of summer project bursaries each year, which allow fourth year students on MEng programmes to work with companies to tackle some of the real world problems in the energy sector. The bursaries are each worth 3,000 and projects run from June to mid-september. Level Semester 1 Semester 2 1 Mechanics A Mechanics B Civil Engineering Applications 1 Introduction to Materials Construction Technology 1 Introduction to Engineering Design Mathematics for Engineers and Scientists 1 Mathematics for Engineers and Scientists 2 Students take part in site visits to a range of construction sites 2 Analysis of Determinate Structures Civil Engineering Materials Hydraulics and Hydrology A Stress Analysis and Element Strength Surveying and Monitoring in the Built and Natural Design Studies A Problem Solving Environment Mathematics for Engineers and Scientists 3 Statistics for Science Students also have the opportunity to participate in the week-long Constructionarium programme 3 Design of Steel Elements Hydraulics and Hydrology B Transportation Engineering A Geotechnics A Introduction to Soil Mechanics Indeterminate Structures Design of Concrete Elements Geology and Soil Properties Environmental Engineering A 4 Dissertation 1 Civil Engineering Discipline Dissertation 1 Civil Engineering Discipline Geotechnics B Soil Strength Civil Engineering Design Project Optional courses Foundation Engineering 5 Civil Engineering Professional Design Project Choose from a wide range of optional courses, (MEng only) Optional courses: Sustainability and Civil Engineering Ground Engineering Structural Materials Computer Simulation of River Flows Project Management: Theory and Practice including: Stability and Dynamics Environmental Hydrology and Water Resources Human Factor Methods Earthquake Engineering FEA Stress Analysis Students also have the opportunity to participate in a field trip to Barcelona Note that the above Civil Engineering programme structure is provided to illustrate distribution of teaching and is subject to developmental change. In level 2, all students have the opportunity to participate in the Constructionarium programme, which provides hands-on construction experience of the civil engineering industry. To find out more about the Constructionarium, please visit 2 School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society Heriot-Watt University Heriot-Watt University School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society 3
3 Special Features Accreditation Each of the MEng variants of the Civil and Structural Engineering programmes is accredited as fully satisfying the educational base needed to become a Chartered Engineer (CEng), with no further learning required. Each of the BEng variants of the programmes is accredited as partially satisfying the educational base for CEng status. In common with other BEng accredited degrees, a programme of accredited further learning (for example, an MSc) will be needed to complete the educational base for CEng status. You can find out more about accreditation at Fifth Year Field Trip All final year MEng students have the opportunity to participate in a week-long field trip to Barcelona to look at the design of some of the world s most iconic structures. Scholarships Scholarships and awards include Queen s Jubilee Scholarship Trust (QUEST) awards for ICE members. Experimental Facilities Our Edinburgh Campus has state-of-the-art laboratory facilities for structures, hydraulics, geotechnics and civil engineering materials. Each year, a number of fourth year dissertation students are given the opportunity to use some of the larger experimental facilities, working alongside PhD and postdoctoral researchers. Best Practice Mentoring Our one-to-one mentoring scheme supports all first year students, while students at all levels have regular feedback meetings with staff throughout the programme. Graduate Profile Kurtis Wood MEng Structural Engineering with Architectural Design Graduate Construction Engineer, Petrofac The fact that Heriot-Watt is renowned as a technical, nuts and bolts-type university greatly appealed to me, especially as I was doing a structural engineering degree. This type of learning and teaching environment is highly unusual in other universities, the focus seems to be more on the philosophical subjects, rather than technical ones. My job with Petrofac primarily involves focusing on the constructability aspects of major oil and gas projects around the world. I also help to manage cost and safety aspects of these jobs and oversee the physical construction phase out in the field and on site. I think Heriot-Watt is an excellent choice for an undergraduate education. Not only will you receive first class teaching from subject-leading lecturers, but you will also find a very strong willing to learn culture across the whole university something that really does help to create an excellent learning environment. 4 School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society Heriot-Watt University Heriot-Watt University School of Energy, Geoscience, Infrastructure and Society 5
4 Entry Requirements Level 1 entry: typically from 300 UCAS points Level 2 entry: typically from 320 UCAS points SQA Higher/GCE A-Level Mathematics Grade B is required for all programmes. Applications from mature candidates and holders of other qualifications are warmly welcomed. For details of entry requirements by country, visit study-in-the-uk/your-country.htm Please visit our online prospectus at Graduate Destinations Graduates from our Civil and Structural Engineering programmes secure a variety of jobs in organisations ranging from engineering consultancies such as AECOM and Jacobs to government agencies including the Office of Public Works and Transport Scotland. Our highly sought after graduates are involved in large-scale global infrastructure projects in energy, transport and water from an early stage, and tend to be promoted quickly to senior positions. This is testament to the practical nature of the curriculum and the respect afforded to Heriot-Watt by employers around the world. Civil Engineering graduates have gone on to manage design and construction projects ranging from urban drainage systems to airports. Structural Engineering graduates have contributed to the design of large or complex structures such as bridges and power stations. Graduates of our Structural Engineering with Architectural Design programme have gone on to design international landmark structures that combine artistic inspiration and engineering innovation, like BBC Scotland s headquarters at Pacific Quay, Glasgow. I had a great time studying at Heriot-Watt. I found the subjects very interesting as well as relevant to my personal development and career. The quality of teaching is excellent, and lecturers are easy to approach both in class and on a one-to-one basis.
