1 2104 HILL STREET 2104 Hill Street DHR RESOURCE NUMBER: DATE/PERIOD: circa 1935 Site Description: Built into a banked site on the east side of Hill Street, the house is sited at a level grade to the road with an average setback. A walkway of concrete pavers leads from the street to the front door. Mature trees and small boxwoods landscape the lot. Primary Resource Description: Constructed ca. 1935, this two-story, three-bay, frame dwelling rests on a stretcherbond brick foundation with 6/6-sash windows and door access on the north side because of the banked site. The vernacular -style house has a hipped roof clad in asphalt shingles, stucco siding, and a front, projecting, polygonal bay window. Following an American Foursquare form, the house features single and paired 4/1-sash doublehung wood windows, a new 6/6-sash window on the front façade with louvered shutters, a paneled front door, a wooden belt course at the foundation and between the two stories, overhanging eaves, and a central-interior brick chimney with a corbelled cap. The one-bay, front portico has square posts and a two-rail handrail. A shed-roofed, one-bay porch extends off the rear. Significance Statement: Constructed ca. 1935, this stuccoed American Foursquare has -style detailing. It contributes to the potential Fry s Spring Historic District and appears on the 1950 Sanborn Map of the area.
2 2200 HILL STREET 2200 Hill Street DHR RESOURCE NUMBER: DATE/PERIOD: 1942 Site Description: Built on a sideways sloping lot on the east side of Hill Street, this house is placed at an average setback. A gravel driveway runs along the north side of the property around to the back yard, past the wooden side deck. In the front yard is a concrete stoop, a concrete block retaining wall, and a wooden picket fence. Various bushes and shrubbery decorate the property. No secondary resources. Primary Site Description: Constructed in 1942, this three-bay, one-and-a-half-story, frame Cape Cod-style dwelling has vinyl siding, and an asphalt-shingled, side-gabled roof with two gabled front dormers. Because of the banked site, the house rests on a split-level concrete foundation; the exposed north side of the foundation is clad in vinyl siding. The vinyl windows are four-over-four and six-over-six-sash and include louvered vinyl shutters on the front. An interior-end brick chimney is located on the front slope of the gable roof and a concrete stoop with wrought iron railings is located at the front door. A large two-story, three-bay, gable-roofed rear frame extends to the rear and includes a four-bay side porch/deck. Significant Statement: This Cape Cod-style frame dwelling was constructed in 1942 and therefore contributes to the Fry s Spring Historic District in the area of Architecture. It is listed in the 1957 Charlottesville City Directory as being occupied by James A. Reynolds, plant manager at Albemarle Weaving ad his wife Ruby C.
3 2202 HILL STREET 2202 Hill Street DHR RESOURCE NUMBER: DATE/PERIOD: circa 1920 Craftsman Site Description: Placed on the east side of Hill Street, the house is sited at a level grade to the road with an average setback. A brick walkway leads from the street to the front door. A paved driveway is located south of the house and a green chain-link fence lines the south border of the backyard. Mature trees, bushes, and shrubs landscape the lot. Primary Resource Description: This one-story, three-bay, Craftsman-style frame dwelling rests on a raised Flemishvariant brick foundation. Constructed ca. 1920, the house has a hipped roof clad in asphalt shingles, weatherboard siding, and 4/1-sash double-hung wood windows. The ones on the front of the house have canted corners. Other details include overhanging eaves, scalloped rafter ends, four- and six-light basement windows, and a central-interior brick chimney with a corbelled cap. The one-bay, pedimented, front portico features flared eaves, exposed rafter ends, a rectangular attic window, Tuscan columns, and full-height windows on either side of the modern front door. Significance Statement: This well-preserved Craftsman-style dwelling is one of the few houses from ca on Hill Street. It contributes to the potential Fry s Spring Historic District and appears on the 1929 Sanborn Map of the area.
4 2206 HILL STREET 2206 Hill Street DHR RESOURCE NUMBER: DATE/PERIOD: 1935 Craftsman Secondary: Shed (contributing) Site Description: Located on the east side of Hill Street, this house is built at an average setback and average grade. A concrete driveway extends the length of the north side of the house and a concrete walk and porch are in front. A single mature tree decorates the front yard. There is a shed in the rear yard. Secondary Site Description: N/A Primary Site Description: Constructed in 1935, this one-and-a-half-story, two-bay, stuccoed frame Craftsman-style dwelling is built into a banked site. The side-gabled, asphalt-shingled roof has a rear and front, full-width, shed-roofed dormer, and overhanging eaves with exposed purlin ends. The two-bay integral front porch has square posts and a concrete floor. The foundation is parged concrete and the structure is set on a banked site so that the basement level is above ground on the sides and rear. The side basement entry has a shed-roof hood. Windows are single and paired oneover-one-sash. Triangular attic vents are found in the gable ends of the house. Secondary Resource Description: This ca. 1950, one-story, one-bay, stuccoed frame shed has an asphalt-shingled gable roof and a six-light fixed window. It is located in the northeast corner of the backyard and was not clearly visible from the street. Significant Statement: This stuccoed Craftsman-style dwelling was constructed in 1935 and therefore contributes to the Fry s Spring Historic District in the area of Architecture. It is listed in the 1957 Charlottesville City Directory as being occupied by Frederick C. Staples and his wife Susie W., who worked for the Yellow Cab Company.
5 2217 HILL STREET 2217 Hill Street DHR RESOURCE NUMBER: DATE/PERIOD: 1947 Site Description: Located on the southwest corner of Todd Avenue and Hill Street, this dwelling faces east and is placed at an average setback and level grade. A rear, one-story addition is found on the back of the house and a paved driveway leads from that to Todd Avenue. Three dogwoods and various bushes decorate the lot. There are no secondary resources. Primary Site Description: Constructed in 1947, this one-and-a-half-story, two-bay, vernacular -style frame dwelling is clad in Masonite siding and rests on a parged concrete block foundation. The side gabled, asphaltshingled roof with a central brick chimney features a shed-roofed front dormer and a rear wall dormer, each with two sixover-six-sash wood windows. The one-bay shed, roofed front stoop has square posts, and a wood deck and wooden railing. The wood windows on the house are six-over-six-sash louvered shutters. A one-story, gable-roofed rear hyphen clad with board-and-batten attaches the main block to another one-story, rear gabled wing with a polygonal bay window on its north side. The house is similar in design to 2219, 2221, and 2223 Hill Street. Significant Statement: This frame vernacular -style dwelling was constructed in 1947 and therefore contributes to the Fry s Spring Historic District in the area of Architecture. The house is similar in design to 2219, 2221, and 2223 Hill Street. It is listed in the 1957 Charlottesville City Directory as being occupied by John A. Bailey, a carpenter at Lasley Construction Company and his wife, Alma Bailey, a music teacher.

A shared paved driveway is at the south end of the property, and a concrete walk leads from the front of the house out to Hill Street. One dogwood graces the front yard and a modern wood deck is in the back. There are no secondary resources. Primary Site Description: Constructed in 1947, this two-bay, one-and-a-half-story, vernacular -style frame dwelling has aluminum siding and rests on a parged concrete block foundation. The side-gabled, asphalt-shingled roof has a central brick chimney and a full-length shed-roofed front dormer and a similar and rear wall dormer. The twobay, inset front porch is screened and is located at the southeast corner of the house. The wood windows are six-over-sixsash and the rear of the house has a full-width modern deck. The house is similar in design to 2217, 2221, and 2223 Hill Street. Significant Statement: This frame vernacular -style dwelling was constructed in 1947 and therefore contributes to the Fry s Spring Historic District in the area of Architecture. The house is similar in design to 2217, 2221, and 2223 Hill Street. It is listed in the 1957 City Directory as the home of Mrs. Sallie B. Norris, widow of Thomas F. Norris.
7 2221 HILL STREET 2221 Hill Street DHR RESOURCE NUMBER: DATE/PERIOD: circa 1947 Site Description: Located on the west side of Hill Street, the house is sited at a level grade to the road with an average setback. A concrete walkway leads from the gravel driveway on the south side of the house to the front door. Small boxwoods landscape the lot. Primary Resource Description: This one-and-a-half-story, two-bay, vernacular -style frame dwelling rests on a concrete block foundation. Constructed ca. 1947, the house has a gable roof clad in asphalt shingles, large front and rear shed dormers, and aluminum siding. The dwelling features 6/6-sash double-hung wood windows, a paneled front door, and a central-interior brick chimney with a corbelled cap. The two-bay front porch has a shed roof and square posts. Significance Statement: This house is one of four almost identical dwelling on the west side of Hill Street, that were all probably constructed at the same time by the same builder and may in fact be kit houses. The one at 2217 Hill Street has asbestos siding and a one-bay shed-roofed porch with square posts. The one at 2219 has aluminum siding and an enclosed front porch and includes a modern garage. The house at 2223 is clad in Masonite and has no front porch. All of these would contribute to the potential Fry s Spring Historic District and appear on the 1950 Sanborn Map.
8 2223 HILL STREET 2223 Hill Street DHR RESOURCE NUMBER: DATE/PERIOD: 1946 Vernacular Secondary Resource: Shed (non-contributing) Site Description: Located on the northwest junction of Robertson Avenue and Hill Street, this house faces east onto Hill with an average setback and at level grade. A concrete walk runs down the front yard to the sidewalk. A concrete patio is located in the rear along with a shed, both concealed by a privacy fence. A gravel driveway is located on the west side of the property, off of Robertson Avenue. Various ornamental bushes decorate the property, which has a wooden rail fence that surrounds it. Secondary Site Description: N/A Primary Site Description: Constructed in 1946, this two-bay, one-and-a-half-story, frame vernacular dwelling has aluminum siding and rests on a concrete block foundation. The side-gabled, asphalt-shingled roof has a central brick chimney and full-length front shed-roofed dormer. The rear shed-roofed dormer is a wall dormer. The house is fronted by a simple concrete block front stoop. The wood windows are six-over-six-sash with wooden louvered shutters. The rear door has a gabled hood. The house is similar to 2217, 2219, and 2221 Hill Street. Secondary Resource Description: This ca. 1970, one-story, one-bay, gable-roofed, frame storage shed has aluminum siding, asphalt-shingle roofing, and a paneled metal door. Significant Statement: This frame vernacular -style dwelling was constructed in 1946 and therefore contributes to the Fry s Spring Historic District in the area of Architecture. The house is similar in design to 2217, 2219, and 2221 Hill Street. It is listed in the 1957 Charlottesville City Directory as being occupied by Frederick B. Wood, a salesman at Central Auto Parts and his wife Jane W.
