The stapler shall have a flaring attachment. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 GENERAL: Insulation, adhesives, mastics, cements, vapor barrier coatings and other coatings or materials applied to the insulation shall be uniformly applied in strict accordance with Manufacturer's recommendations. A. SURFACE PREPARATION: Surfaces to be insulated shall be dry and free of oil, dirt, and other foreign material prior to the application of insulation. B. MOISTURE: Insulation materials shall be dry when installed. C. OUTDOOR INSTALLATIONS: No more insulation shall be applied in one day than can be weatherproofed during the same day. Exposed edges of unfinished insulation shall be protected against weather damage. D. GALVANIC CORROSION: Insulation components of dissimilar metals subject to galvanic corrosion shall not be brought into contact with each other. E. PAINT: Equipment shall have one prime coat of paint (by others) or a manufacturer's standard finish coat before insulation is installed. Covering material must be pre-sized or otherwise compatible with the finish PAINT material. Finish painting over insulation, where required, will be by others. F. END DETAILS: Wherever insulation terminates, trowel insulation cement to a neat bevel and cover. Allow room to remove flange bolts. Openings in insulation at manholes, nozzles, taps, supports or other attachments shall be sealed against the entrance of water. Page 4 of 7

5 G. NAMEPLATES: Insulation around nameplates and code stamps shall be beveled away from such markings and sealed against entrance of water. H. VESSEL ACCESS COVERS: Insulate in such a manner that the bolting may be removed without disturbing the insulation. I. CEMENT AND MASTIC: Coating shall be applied in 1/8 inch coats. J. VOIDS: Fill voids with insulating cement before applying finish cover. Joints shall be butted tight and finished smooth. K. JOINTS: Insulation shall be installed with sections closely butted together. The outer layer of a multiple layer insulation system shall be installed with longitudinal and end joints staggered over the joints of the inner layer. Longitudinal joints shall be on least conspicuous side. L. LAPS: Laps on longitudinal and butt joints of outer layer of insulation shall be pasted down. M. STAPLES: Staples may be used, as additional joint fastening, only on tanks and equipment operating above 70F. Staples shall NOT be used to fasten insulation to items requiring a vapor barrier such as chillers, dehumidifiers and evaporator coolers operating below 70F. N. WALL PENETRATIONS: Insulation of duct and equipment shall be unbroken through wall sleeves or other openings. O. INSULATION ANCHORS: Provide support, lugs, or anchorages required for fastening insulation in place. P. INSULATION SUPPORT: Provide insulation support steel at the base of equipment such as Boilers, Vertical Tanks, etc. Q. TEMPERATURE LIMITATIONS FOR PRESSURE-SENSITIVE TAPES: Pressuresensitive sealing tapes or patches shall only be applied when the ambient temperature is between 35F and 110F. R. WELD PINS: Space weld pins 12 inches on center and 3 inches from edge, unless noted otherwise. S. PATCHING: Whenever patching is done to existing insulation work, materials and finish of patched area shall match existing. T. DOUBLE LAYER INSULATION: Where insulation is specified in thickness greater than 2 inches or operating temperature shall exceed 600F, it shall be applied in multiple layers. Each layer shall be separately vapor sealed. U. EXPANSION JOINTS: One inch wide joints, packed with light density Fiberglas shall be provided on tanks, towers, or heat exchangers at every reinforcing ring on vertical equipment and every 16 feet on horizontal equipment. Page 5 of 7

6 3.2 ITEMS NOT INSULATED A. Insulation shall be omitted on the following components unless indicated otherwise on the drawings. A) Vent to atmosphere, discharges from safety devices and relief valves b) Nameplates and Code Stamps c) Man ways and Access Doors 3.3 INSTALLATION - ROUND VESSELS 36 INCHES AND LESS IN DIAMETER A. FIT: Insulation shall be cut or scored to fit the contour of the equipment without voids between equipment surface and insulation. Voids around edges shall be stuffed with like type insulation pieces. B. FASTENERS: Secure insulation to vessel with 1/2 inch stainless steel bands around circumference spaced 12 inches apart. C. JOINTS/VOIDS: Point up voids with insulating cement. Seal all breaks and joints with matching seal tape and vapor barrier mastic on faced insulation. D. SUPPORT RING: On vessels taller than 10 feet provide insulation support ring vertically every 10 feet. Support ring to be 1/2 inch less in width than insulation thickness. 3.4 INSTALLATION - IRREGULAR AND FLAT SURFACES - AND VESSELS GREATER THAN 36 INCHES DIAMETER A. FIT: Insulation shall be cut or scored to fit the contour of the equipment without voids between equipment surface and insulation. Voids around edges shall be stuffed with like type insulation pieces. B. FASTENERS, VERTICAL SURFACES: Insulation shall be impaled on weld pins 12 inches on center, a minimum of 3 inches from edge of insulation, and secured in place with 1-1/2_inch speed washers. If a corrugated metal jacket is specified as the finish, shoulder studs shall replace welded pins and be used to anchor metal jacket as well as insulation. C. FASTENERS, FLAT HORIZONTAL SURFACES: Insulation shall be impaled over weld pins spaced 18 inches apart. D. JOINTS/VOIDS: Point up all voids with insulating cement. Seal all breaks and joints with matching seal tape and vapor barrier mastic on faced insulation. Coat all speed washers with insulating cement unless aluminum jacket is to be applied. 3.5 FINISHES A. INDOOR EQUIPMENT WITH IRREGULAR SURFACES: Finish with two coats of vapor barrier mastic, reinforced with glass fabric. Lap all joints a minimum of 2 inches. Page 6 of 7

7 B. OUTDOOR EQUIPMENT WITH IRREGULAR SURFACES: Apply two 1/8 inch coats of outdoor weatherproof mastic, reinforced with glass fabric. Lap all joints a minimum of 2 inches. C. TANKS AND ROUND EQUIPMENT - 36 INCH DIAMETER AND LESS: Finish with.024 inch thick aluminum jacket held in place with 1/2 inch stainless steel horizontal bands on 12 inch vertical centers. Overlap all joints 3 inches minimum. Horizontal joints to have "S" clips or stainless steel sheet metal screws on 6 inch centers. Tank and vessel ends and tops to be finished as in or D. FLAT SURFACES, TANKS AND ROUND EQUIPMENT 36 INCH DIAMETER AND LARGER: Finish with.024 inch thick corrugated aluminum jacket. Overlap all horizontal joints a minimum of 4 inches and vertical joints a minimum of 1-1/2 corrugations. Secure by shoulder studs. All seams to be further fastened with stainless steel screws on 8 inch centers. Tank and vessel ends and tops to be finished as in or E. MANHOLES, NOZZLES AND COUPLINGS: Aluminum sheets shall be carefully fitted around all manholes, nozzles and couplings on shell of tanks in order to make a weather- tight covering. Outdoor Breather Mastic shall be applied on overlapping metal surfaces and on areas adjacent to the appurtenance so joints and seams are weatherproof. On equipment subject to mechanical abuse, 24 gauge sheet metal shall be substituted for the aluminum jacket. Application per 3.5.C or 3.5.D. ++ END OF SECTION ++ Page 7 of 7
