7 VTA s BART Silicon Valley Development began in the early 2000s as a single 16-mile extension project from Fremont to Santa Clara. In early 2009, VTA Board of Directors committed to building project in phases, with focus on Phase I During the design development, the 6-mile tunnel section with 4 stations (Phase II) was put on hold Phase I is currently under construction, testing and commissioning Renewed planning efforts for Phase II began in 2014

8 VTA and BART Partnership Comprehensive Agreement between VTA & BART executed in 2001 Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) Responsibilities: Pay all costs associated with the extension Contracting/Procurement Construct to applicable BART/industry standards, codes, and regulations Retain ownership of infrastructure Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) Responsibilities: Technical Assistance Operations Maintenance Service Planning

9 Phase II Status In April 2018, both the VTA and BART Board of Directors adopted the Recommended Project Description and Approved the Phase II Extension Project that consists of the BART Extension with Transit-Oriented Joint Development (TOJD): Tunnel Configuration: Single Bore Downtown Station: West Location Diridon Station: North Location
