1 SECTION BUILDING INSULATION PART 1 - GENERAL 1.01 RELATED DOCUMENTS A. Drawings and general provisions of Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division-1 Specification Sections, apply to this Section SUMMARY A. This Section includes the following: 1. Building insulation in batt form. 2. Rigid board insulation. 3. Cavity wall insulation. B. Related Sections: The following sections contain requirements that relate to this section: 1.03 DEFINITIONS 1. Division-9 Section "Gypsum Drywall" for sound attenuation insulation installed as part of metal-framed wall and partition assemblies, and metal furring channels and brackets. A. Thermal Resistivity: Where the thermal resistivity of insulation products are designated by "r-values," provide materials in thickness required to achieve designated "R-values" as follows: Walls: R-19 Ceilings and Soffits: R QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Fire Performance Characteristics: Provide insulation materials identical to those whose indicated fire performance characteristics have been determined per the ASTM test method indicated below, by UL or other testing and inspecting organizations acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction. Identify products with appropriate markings of applicable testing and inspecting organization.

Single-Source Responsibility for Insulation Products: Obtain each type of building insulation from a single source with resources to provide products of consistent quality in appearance and physical properties without delaying progress of the Work DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Protect insulation materials from physical damage and from deterioration by moisture, soiling, and other sources. Store inside and in a dry location. Comply with manufacturer's recommendations for handling, storage, and protection during installation. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.01 MANUFACTURERS A. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide insulation products of one of the following: 1. Manufacturers of Glass Fiber Batt Insulation: CertainTeed Corp. Manville: Building Insulations Div., Manville Sales Corp. Owens/Corning Fiberglas Corp. 2. Manufacturers of Rigid Board Insulation: 2.02 INSULATING MATERIALS Owens/Corning Fiberglas Corp. Schuller International W.R. Grace and Co. A. Unfaced Glass Fiber Blanket/Batt Insulation: Thermal insulation produced by combining long resilient glass with thermosetting resins to comply with ASTM C 665 for Type I (blankets without membrane facing); provide pressure-fit units where stud spacing allows friction fitting, free of sags and voids.

Kraft-Faced Glass Fiber Batt Insulation: Thermal insulation produced by combining long resilient glass fibers with thermosetting resins to comply with ASTM C 665 for Type II, Class C (blankets with kraft-face membrane on one face. 1. Flanged Units: Provide blankets/batts fabricated with facing incorporating 4-inch wide flanges along their edges for attachment to framing members. C. Unfaced Glass-Fiber Board Insulation (Wall furring above ceiling): Thermal insulation combining glass fibers with thermosetting resin binders to comply with ASTM C 612, Type IA and IB. 1. Product: Owens/Corning Fiberglas #703 or approved equal. D. Expanded Polystyrene Board Insulation (Wall furring below ceiling): Proprietary system comprised of manufacturer s specially constructed EPS board, and manufacturer s proprietary metal furring strip and fastener system. 1. Product: Thermo-Stud Insulation System, W.R. Grace and Co AUXILIARY INSULATING MATERIALS A. Adhesively Attached Pin Anchors: Perforated plate, 2-inches square, welded to projecting pin, with self-locking washer, complying with the following requirements: 1. Plate: Zinc-plated steel, inch thick. 2. Pin: Copper-coated low carbon steel, fully annealed, inches in diameter, length to suit depth of insulation indicated, and with washer in place, to hold insulation tightly to substrate behind insulation. 3. Self-Locking Washer: Mild steel, inch thick, size as required to hold insulation securely.

5 PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.01 EXAMINATION A. Examine substrates and conditions with Installer present, for compliance with requirements of the Sections in which substrates and related work are specified and to determine if other conditions affecting performance of insulation are satisfactory. Do not proceed with installation of insulation until unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected PREPARATION A. Clean substrates of substances harmful to insulations INSTALLATION, GENERAL A. Comply with insulation manufacturer's instructions applicable to products and application indicated. If printed instructions are not available or do not apply to project conditions, consult manufacturer's technical representative for specific recommendations before proceeding with installation of insulation. B. Extend insulation full thickness as indicated to envelop entire area to be insulated. Cut and fit tightly around obstructions, and fill voids with insulation. Remove projections that interfere with placement. C. Apply a single layer of insulation of required thickness, unless otherwise shown or required to make up total thickness INSTALLATION OF GENERAL BUILDING INSULATION A. Apply insulation units to substrate by method indicated, complying with manufacturer's recommendations. If no specific method is indicated, bond units to substrate with adhesive or use mechanical anchorage to provide permanent placement and support of units. 1. Friction fit to metal studs if outside cover material is in place. In heights over 8-feet and where friction fit does not support the insulation, apply to pins or anchors. 2. Adhere welded pins or anchors to metal studs with adhesive recommended by the manufacturer. Select pin or anchor length to ensure tight fit.

6 3.05 PROTECTION 3. Impale insulation onto pin and anchor with washer place over the anchor to hold insulation in place. 4. Attach self-adhesive spindle or prong-type insulation anchors to roof or floor deck or with an adhesive recommended by the manufacturer. Select anchor length to ensure tight fit. 5. Firmly attach flanges of units to substrates with mechanical fasteners or adhesives as recommended by insulation manufacturer. A. General: Protect installed insulation from damage due to harmful weather exposures, physical abuse, and other causes. Provide temporary coverings or enclosures where insulation will be subject to abuse and cannot be concealed and protected by permanent construction immediately after installation. **END OF SECTION**
