Drilled Shafts A Drilled Shaft is a deep foundation that is constructed by placing steel and fluid concrete in a drilled hole. Reason? To resist compressive, uplift and lateral loads Installation Plan Submittal Installation Plan Approval Payment Drilled Shaft Process: Set Casing Drill Clean Position Place 11/1/2017 FDOT Final Estimates Level 2 Release 11, Module 6 13 An approved Drilled Shaft Installation Plan is required for each project. The plan is generated by the Contractor, submitted to the Project Administrator and approved by the District Geotechnical Engineer. Payment for drilled shafts is according to the Standard Specifications, Section as follows: Drilled Shaft = Linear Measure (foot) Casing = Linear Measure Core Shaft Excavation = Linear Measure Test Loads = Each Unclassified Shaft Excavation = Linear Measurement Data Collection = Lump Sum Drilled Shaft Payment is Linear Measured with payment from the top of the shaft as indicated on the plans to the authorized depth. When the contractor chooses to use a casing with outside diameter (O.D.) rather than an inside diameter (I.D.) sized casing, additional shaft length will be required and calculated by the formula in Cost associated with the additional length are assumed by the contractor (including but not limited to excavation, concrete, steel). The pay quantity will be adjusted by the factor shown in

Drilled Shaft Records Drilled Shaft Log for Miscellaneous Structures (Form ) is workbook used to record the construction information observed during the construction process. An Excel spreadsheet format with the following content tabs: Excavation Logs (Drilled Shaft Page 1 & 2) Fluid/Slurry Testing Log Reinforcement/Spacers Log Concrete Placement Log Concrete Volumes Concrete Curve Volumes Blank Curve Volume Estimated Steel Volume Additional pages for comments Pay Summary Sheet (Hidden) 11/1/2017 FDOT Final Estimates Level 2 Release 11, Module 6 14 Form is an Excel spreadsheet workbook that contains multiple tabs (listed above) which are used to document the construction of the drill shaft. The user can fill out all the necessary information and summarize the payment under that tab. Instructions are also available for the user s convenience. This is located on the Forms and Procedures Website at the following link: The Pay Summary Sheet tab is hidden in the Workbook for Drilled Shafts for Miscellaneous Structures ( ). The Inspector should check with the PA on shafts for miscellaneous structures concerning payment. Typically miscellaneous structures are paid for as an each or Lump Sum, including the foundation, and there will be no drilled shaft pay items to be paid separately. Therefore this tab is not strictly necessary for miscellaneous structures; however, it is useful to have the summary for records. 6-14

Drilled Shaft Adjustments Per Specification : The Engineer will allow the Contractor to supply casing with an outside diameter equal to the specified shaft diameter (O.D. casing) provided he supplies additional shaft length at the shaft tip. Determine the additional length of shaft required by the following relationship: D Additional Length = 1 D 2 L where: D 2 D 1 = casing inside diameter specified = shaft diameter specified D 2 = casing inside diameter provided (D2 = D1 minus twice the wall thickness) L = authorized shaft length below ground for temporary casing methods or below casing for permanent casing methods. Contractor shall bear all additional costs related to the additional length including but not limited to cost of extra excavation, extra concrete, and extra reinforcing steel, except as allowed under Specification /1/2017 FDOT Final Estimates Level 2 Release 11, Module

Drilled Shaft Adjustments Per Specification : When the Contractor elects to provide outside diameter (O.D.) sized casing rather than inside diameter (I.D.) sized casing as allowed in , the pay quantity measured as described above will be multiplied by a factor (F) determined as follows: Factor (F) = 2D 2 D 1 D 2 where: F = factor to adjust pay quantities to compensate for smaller shafts D 1 = casing inside diameter specified = shaft diameter specified D 2 = casing inside diameter provided (D2 = D1 minus twice the wall thickness) 11/1/2017 FDOT Final Estimates Level 2 Release 11, Module

Drilled Shaft Concrete Example 1 The plans call for a drilled shaft with a 42 inches diameter with a permanent casing. The contractor chooses to use a casing with outside diameter of 42 inches. Calculate the additional shaft length required and the adjusted pay quantity. Top El. = ft. Permanent Casing O.D. = 42 Wall Thickness (t) = Bottom of Casing El. = ft. 27 Piling Piling Documentation Pile Logs Critical Payment and Structural Information Authorized Lengths Driving Criteria 11/1/2017 FDOT Final Estimates Level 2 Release 11, Module 6 27 Authorized lengths and driving criteria both come from the District Geotechnical Engineer through the District Construction Engineer. It is recommended to use the Department s Forms to document all piling information instead of using the piling field books. It is a savings to the Department. 6-27

Piling Documentation/Measurements needed for piling: Authorized / Furnished Lengths Driven Lengths Splice Information Hammer Data Blow Counts Re Drive Information Cut Off Elevation Ground Elevation Pile Tip Elevation Location/Bent/Pier 11/1/2017 FDOT Final Estimates Level 2 Release 11, Module 6 28 Concrete or steel sheet piles are not recorded in the pile book. Sheet piles as outlined in the plans are paid as follows: Temporary sheet piles = Area plan quantity Permanent sheet piles = Area field measurement All other sheet piles not outlined in the plans are paid for as incidental to other pay items. 6-28

Piling Set Checks Pile Re drive Pile Heave 11/1/2017 FDOT Final Estimates Level 2 Release 11, Module 6 29 Set-Check: If the Contractor drives the pile to approximately 12 inches above cutoff without reaching the required resistance, the Engineer may require the Contractor to interrupt driving to perform a set-check. The Engineer will be provided with suitable equipment for elevation determinations to decide accurate pile penetration during the set-checks. For Production Piles, there will be no separate payment for the initial two setchecks performed the day of and the working day following initial driving. For each additional set-check ordered by the Engineer and performed within the following working day of initial driving, an additional quantity of 10 feet of piling will be paid. (See pile driving criteria for test piles. 4 total free set-checks within the initial driving and working day following initial driving for concrete and steel piling) Pile Re-drive: pile re-drive consists of re-driving the pile following the day of initial driving to determine time effects, to reestablish pile capacity due to pile heave, or for other reasons determined by the Engineer. Re-drive piles are directed by the Engineer. Payment for any pile re-drive (test pile or production pile) ordered by the Engineer will consist of 20 feet of additional piling. Pile Heave is the upward movement of a pile from its originally driven elevation. 6-29

Piling Dynamic Load Test Static Load Test 11/1/2017 FDOT Final Estimates Level 2 Release 11, Module 6 30 Dynamic Load Tests: Dynamic load testing consists of predicting pile capacity from blows of the hammers during drive and/or redrive of an instrumented pile. All test piles will have dynamic load tests. The Engineer will perform dynamic load tests to evaluate any or all of the following: 1. Evaluate suitability of Contractor s driving equipment, including hammer, capblock, pile cushion, and any proposed follower 2. Determine pile capacity 3. Determine pile stresses 4. Determine energy transfer to pile 5. Determine distribution of soil resistance 6. Evaluate soil variables including quake and damping 7. Evaluate hammer-pile-soil system for wave equation analyses 8. Evaluate pile installation problems 9. Other Static Load Tests: Static load testing consists of applying a static load to the pile to determine its capacity. 6-30

Piling Pile Cut Off Steel Piles Other Pile Types 11/1/2017 FDOT Final Estimates Level 2 Release 11, Module 6 31 Pile Cut-offs: (a) Steel Piling: Unless shown otherwise in the plans, the Department will retain ownership of cut-off sections, or portions of cut-off sections, and unused piling 20 feet long or longer that are not damaged. The Contractor will deliver them to the Department s nearest maintenance yard. Ensure that sections of piles delivered to the maintenance yard are straight and undamaged. Cut off the damaged portions prior to delivery. The Contractor will take ownership of cut-off sections less than 20 feet long, remove them from the job and dispose of them. (b) Other Pile Types: Upon completion of all work under the Contract in connection with piling, unless shown otherwise in the plan, the contractor will take ownership of any unused cut-off lengths remaining, and remove them from the right-of-way. 6-31

Piling Test Piles 11/1/2017 FDOT Final Estimates Level 2 Release 11, Module 6 32 Test Piles: Where so directed by the plans or the Engineer, cut off, or build-up as necessary, test piles, and leave them in place as permanent piles. Extract and replace test piles driven in permanent position and found not suitable for use due to actions of the Contractor at no expense to the Department. Pull, or cut off at an elevation 2 feet below the ground surface or bottom of proposed excavation, test piles driven out of permanent position, and dispose of the removed portion of the test pile. When test piles are required to be driven in permanent pile positions, the Contractor may elect to drive the test pile out of position, with the approval of the Engineer, provided that a replacement pile is furnished and driven by the Contractor at no expense to the Department in the position that was to be occupied by the test pile. Under this option, the Department will pay for the test pile in the same manner as if it were in permanent position. Unless otherwise directed in the plans or by the Engineer, the Contractor shall retain ownership of test piles that are pulled or cut off and provide areas for their disposal. 6-32

Piling Pile Splice Pile > 2 feet Authorized Un authorized Pile Build up Pile 5 feet Cap Cutoff Elevation Splice Build-up Pile 11/1/2017 FDOT Final Estimates Level 2 Release 11, Module 6 33 What is Splicing? Joining two piles together to: Obtain a greater length than originally authorized Incorporate test piling in the finished structure Further drive test piling (for concrete, steel and test piles). Payment for concrete pile splice, authorized by the Engineer, will be made as 30 feet of additional pre-stressed concrete piles. Payment for steel pile splices, authorized by the Engineer, will be made as 20 feet of additional steel pile. Pile splices are authorized by the Engineer. No additional compensation will be allowed for splices required to obtain the authorized length. Build-up: For concrete piles and test piles, where the build-up is 5 feet or less in length, the quantity to be paid for will be 9 feet of Prestressed concrete piling under Pay Item No (Prestressed Concrete Piling). The payment will suffice as compensation for drilling and grouting the dowels and all other costs for which provision has not otherwise been made. The Contractor, if he so elects, may cast the pile build-up with the cap. The 9 feet is compensation for the buildup and is paid as piling furnished. 6-33
