1 DIVISION 7 THERMAL AND MOISTURE PROTECTION SECTION PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section. 1.2 SUMMARY A. This Section includes the following: 1. Perimeter insulation under slabs-on-grade. 2. Cavity-wall insulation. 3. Glass fiber board insulation. 4. Glass fiber blanket insulation. 5. Roof Vapor Retarders. 6. Sound attenuation insulation. 7. Foam-in-Place masonry insulation 8. Spray foam surface insulation 9. Spray-on thermal barrier (exposed foam) B. Related Sections include the following: 1. Division 03 Section Cast-in-Place Concrete for Vapor Retarders installed under Concrete Slabs. 2. Division 07 Section " Thermoplastic Membrane Roofing" for insulation specified as part of roofing construction. 3. Division 09 Section "Gypsum Board" for installation in metal-framed assemblies of insulation specified by referencing this Section. 4. Division 21 Section "Fire-Suppression Systems Insulation." 5. Division 22 Section "Plumbing Insulation." 6. Division 23 Section "HVAC Insulation." 1.3 PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS A. Plenum Rating: Provide glass-fiber insulation where indicated in ceiling plenums whose test performance is rated as follows for use in plenums as determined by testing identical products per "Erosion Test" and "Mold Growth and Humidity Test" described in UL 181, or on comparable tests from another standard acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction. 1.4 SUBMITTALS A. Product Data: For each type of product indicated. B. Product Test Reports: Based on evaluation of comprehensive tests performed by a qualified testing agency for insulation products. 13-HC
2 C. Research/Evaluation Reports: For foam-plastic insulation. 1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Source Limitations: Obtain each type of building insulation through one source from a single manufacturer. B. Fire-Test-Response Characteristics: Provide insulation and related materials with the fire-testresponse characteristics indicated, as determined by testing identical products per test method indicated below by UL or another testing and inspecting agency acceptable to authorities having jurisdiction. Identify materials with appropriate markings of applicable testing and inspecting agency. 1. Surface-Burning Characteristics: ASTM E Fire-Resistance Ratings: ASTM E Combustion Characteristics: ASTM E DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Protect insulation materials from physical damage and from deterioration by moisture, soiling, and other sources. Store inside and in a dry location. Comply with manufacturer's written instructions for handling, storing, and protecting during installation. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 PERIMETER SLAB INSULATION A. Extruded-Polystyrene Board Insulation: ASTM C 578, of type and density indicated below, with maximum flame-spread and smoke-developed indexes of 75 and 450, respectively: 1. Basis-of-Design Product: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide Dow Chemical Company Styrofoam Brand Square Edge EPS insulation or a comparable product by one of the following: a. Green Guard Scoreboard Insulation Board. 2. Type IV, 1.60 lb/cu. ft., unless otherwise indicated. 3. Compressive Resistance: 25psi (ASTM D ). 4. Thickness: Nominal 2 5. Thermal Resistance: R-12 (ASTM C ). 6. Water Absorption: Max. 0.3% by volume (ASTM C ). 2.2 MASONRY CAVITY WALL INSULATION 1. Thermax as manufactured by Dow 2. Enverge CI Foil as manufactured by Firestone HC1-033
3 3. AP Foil Faced Polyisocyanurate by Johns-Manville 4. EnergyShield PRO as manufactured by Atlas Wall CI Board B. Cavity Wall Insulation:: 2 thick x 16 wide (aged R=14) aluminum foil-faced glass-fiber reinforced, rigid, cellular, polyisocyanurate thermal insulation complying with ASTM C1289, Type 1, Class I. 2.3 GLASS-FIBER BOARD INSULATION 1. CertaPro Foil Faced Batts by CertainTeed Corporation. 2. Foil Faced Insulation by Johns Manville. 3. Fiberglas 700 Series Insulations by Owens Corning. B. Foil-Faced, Glass-Fiber Board Insulation: ASTM C 612, Type IA; faced on 1 side with foilscrim-kraft or foil-scrim-polyethylene vapor retarder, with maximum flame-spread and smokedeveloped indexes of 25 and 50, respectively; and of the following nominal density and thermal resistivity: 1. Nominal density of 6.0 lb/cu. ft., thermal resistivity of 4.3 deg F x h x sq. ft./btu x in. at 75 deg F. 2. Perm. Rating of 0.02 or less. 3. Mechanically fasten per manufacturer s recommendations. 2.4 GLASS-FIBER BLANKET INSULATION 1. CertainTeed Corporation. 2. Johns Manville. 3. Owens Corning. B. Unfaced, Glass-Fiber Blanket Sound Insulation: ASTM C 665, Type I (blankets without membrane facing); consisting of fibers; with maximum flame-spread and smoke-developed indexes of 25 and 50, respectively; passing ASTM E 136 for combustion characteristics. C. Faced, Glass-Fiber Blanket Insulation: ASTM C 665, Type III, Class A (membrane-faced surface with a flame-spread index of 25 or less); Category 1 (membrane is a vapor barrier), faced with foil-scrim-kraft, foil-scrim, or foil-scrim-polyethylene vapor-retarder membrane on 1 face. D. Where glass-fiber blanket insulation is indicated by the following thicknesses, provide blankets in batt or roll form with thermal resistances indicated: /2 inches thick with a thermal resistance of 11 deg F x h x sq. ft./btu at 75 deg F /8 inches thick with a thermal resistance of 11 deg F x h x sq. ft./btu at 75 deg F /2 inches thick with a thermal resistance of 21 deg F x h x sq. ft./btu at 75 deg F /2 inches thick with a thermal resistance of 19 deg F x h x sq. ft./btu at 75 deg F inches thick with a thermal resistance of 28 deg F x h x sq. ft/btu at 75 degrees F. 2.5 FOAM-IN-PLACE MASONRY HOLLOW CORE INSULATION 13-HC

Two component thermal insulation produced by combining resin and catalyst foaming agent surfactant which, when properly ratioed are mixed, together with compressed air produce a cold-setting foam insulation in the hollow cores of hollow unit masonry walls. 1. Products: a. Core-Fill 500 as manufactured by Tailored Chemical Products, P.O. Drawer 4186, Hickory, N.C , (800) b. cfifoam, Inc., P.O Box 10393, Knoxville, TN , (800) c. Thermco as manufactured by Thermal Corporation of America, Mt. Pleasant, IA , (319) B. Thermal Values: Meeting or exceeding ASTM C Thermal Conductivity of Foam Insulation: a. k-value BTU/(hr ft2 of in); 0.22, on average at 25 of b. R-Value (hr ft2 of in)/btu; 4.9 per inch at 25 of, R-18 assembly C. Combustion Characteristics: 1. ASTM E-84 Surface Burning Characteristics: a. Flame Spread: 25 or Less b. Smoke Generated: Less than 450 c. Thickness: 3.5 inches (maximum thickness allowed by test apparatus) d. Tests performed by an independent, certified laboratory located within the United States of America. e. Flammability Classification: Class A or Class I D. Sound Abatement: Minimum Sound Transmission Class ( STC ) rating of 52 for 12 CMU and 52 for 8 CMU, and a minimum Outdoor Indoor Transmission Class ( OITC ) rating of 44 for 8 wall assembly (ASTM E 90-90). E. Density of Foam: 1. Wet Foam 12x12x12 bpx weight: 2 ½ - 3 ¼ lbs. 2. Upon final curing: lb/ft3 3. Shrinkage: 2.0 percent maximum F. Installation: Fill all open cells and voids in hollow concrete masonry walls where indicated on the Drawings. Foam shall be pressure injected through a series of 5/8 to 7/8 holes drilled into every vertical column of block cells (8 C/C). Patch holes with mortar and score to resemble existing surface. Insulation is not to be injected into wet walls. 2.6 POLYISOCYANURATE INSULATION A. Provide Insulation in straight 1 1/2 thick layer fastened to the metal deck substrate. 1. Insulation material: Polyisocyanurate ISO 95+, or polyisocyanurate, which is acceptable to the manufacturer of the membrane system. Insulation shall meet the following criteria: a. Minimum R-9 for (1) straight layers b. Minimum Compressive Strength: 20 psi HC1-033
5 c. Moisture Vapor Transmission: less than 1.0 Perm d. Water Absorption: 1.5% volume e. Flame Spread: 25 maximum f. Smoke Development: g. ASTM C1289 Type II felt or glass fiber mat facer on both major surfaces. 2. The insulation material must be listed in the latest schedule of acceptable roof insulation materials as published by the State of Ohio, Department of Commerce, Bureau of Construction Compliance. 3. Products meeting these specifications as manufactured by Firestone ISO 95+ GL Flat Insulation, Johns-Manville ENRGY 3, and Rmax Multi-Max FA-3 shall be considered equal. 2.7 ROOF VAPOR RETARDERS A. This Article includes vapor retarders applied separately from insulation that includes vapor retarders as facings. Delete materials not required for applications retained. No manufacturers and products are listed for polyethylene vapor retarders specified in first paragraph below. B. Reinforced-Polyethylene Vapor Retarders: 2 outer layers of polyethylene film laminated to an inner reinforcing layer consisting of either nylon cord or polyester scrim and weighing not less than 25 lb/1000 sq. ft., with maximum permeance rating of perm. 1. Products: a. Raven Industries Inc.; DURA-SKRIM 6WW. b. Reef Industries, Inc.; Griffolyn T Other acceptable products: Multi-layer plastic extrusion manufactured with high grade, prime, virgin, polyolfelin resins. a. Stego Industries, LLC.; Stego Wrap 10-mil Class A C. Vapor-Retarder Tape: Pressure-sensitive tape of type recommended by vapor-retarder manufacturer for sealing joints and penetrations in vapor retarder. D. Vapor-Retarder Fasteners: Pancake-head, self-tapping steel drill screws; with fender washers. E. Single-Component Nonsag Urethane Sealant: Product recommended by the vapor-retarder manufacturer. ASTM C 920, Type I, Grade NS, Class 25, Use NT related to exposure, and Use O related to vapor-barrier-related substrates. F. Adhesive for Vapor Retarders: Product recommended by vapor-retarder manufacturer and with demonstrated capability to bond vapor retarders securely to substrates indicated. 2.8 SOUND ATTENUATION INSULATION 1. Themafiber. 2. Fibrex Insulations 3. Owens Corning. 13-HC
6 B. Unfaced, slag-wool-fiber / rock-wool-fiber blanket insulation. ASTM C665, Type I (blankets without membrane facing); consisting of fibers, with maximum flame spread and smoke developed indexes of 25 and 50 respectfully. Passing ASTM E136 combustion characteristics. 2.9 SPRAY FOAM SURFACE INSULATION 1. Icynene, (Interteck) 2. Dow Chemical Froth-Pak 3. CertainTeed Certa-Spray B. Basis of design: Icynene LD-R-50 as manufactured by Interteck. The spray foam is a light density, open celled, flexible, all water blown polyurethane foam insulation meeting the requirements of ASTM C158, E283 and E84 (Flame spread,<25 and Smoke developed <450). C. Insulation to be sprayed on to all roof / wall connections as shown on the drawings to seal and fill all gaps. D. Insulation to be used in conjunction with a spray applied thermal barrier to comply with the Ohio Building Code. E. Insulation to be installed by applicators licensed by the manufacturer SPRAY-APPLIED THERMAL BARRIER 1. Spray Foam Flame Seal - TB 2. Grace Construction Products SPF Thermal Barrier Monokote Z-3306-G 3. Foam Tech Thermal/Fire Barrier B. Basis of design: DC315 spray on thermal barrier for polyurethane foam as manufactured by Spray Foam Gear. The spray on thermal barrier is a water based, non toxic, spray applied coating certified for both the UL-1715, 15 minute thermal barrier and NFPA 286 as an ignition barrier. C. Thermal barrier shall be sprayed on to all exposed spray-on polyurethane foam roof / wall connections as shown on the drawings to satisfy code compliance. D. Install product in accordance with the manufacturers written installation instructions. E. Insulation to be used in conjunction with a spray applied foam insulation to comply with the Ohio Building Code. F. Insulation to be installed by applicators licensed by the manufacturer AUXILIARY INSULATING MATERIALS A. Delete first paragraph below if not retaining insulation with vapor-retarder facings HC1-033
7 B. Vapor-Retarder Tape: Pressure-sensitive tape of type recommended by insulation manufacturers for sealing joints and penetrations in vapor-retarder facings. C. Adhesive for Bonding Insulation: Product with demonstrated capability to bond insulation securely to substrates indicated without damaging insulation and substrates INSULATION SUPPORT FASTENERS A. Insulation support system to adequately support glass-fiber blanket insulation from falling or sagging between metal studs and metal stud partitions. Roll type sheet metal in 100 ft. lengths with perforated prongs. Sheet metal strip screwed to studs at 24 oc. vertically with manufacturer approved fasteners. Design simplifies installation, and doubles as reinforcement strapping and meets federal specifications. Insulation is impaled on 2 1/2 in. arrow prongs which are on 8 in. centers. 3.0 EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION A. Examine substrates and conditions, with Installer present, for compliance with requirements of Sections in which substrates and related work are specified and for other conditions affecting performance. B. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. 3.2 PREPARATION A. Clean substrates of substances harmful to insulation or vapor retarders, including removing projections capable of puncturing vapor retarders or of interfering with insulation attachment. 3.3 INSTALLATION, GENERAL A. Comply with insulation manufacturer's written instructions applicable to products and application indicated. B. Install insulation that is undamaged, dry, and unsoiled and that has not been left exposed at any time to ice, rain, and snow. C. Extend insulation in thickness indicated to envelop entire area to be insulated. Cut and fit tightly around obstructions and fill voids with insulation. Remove projections that interfere with placement. D. For preformed insulating units, provide sizes to fit applications indicated and selected from manufacturer's standard thicknesses, widths, and lengths. Apply single layer of insulation units to produce thickness indicated unless multiple layers are otherwise shown or required to make up total thickness. 13-HC
8 3.4 INSTALLATION OF PERIMETER AND UNDER-SLAB INSULATION A. On vertical surfaces, set insulation units in adhesive applied according to manufacturer's written instructions. Use adhesive recommended by insulation manufacturer. B. If not otherwise indicated, extend insulation a minimum of 24 inches below exterior grade line. C. On horizontal surfaces, loosely lay insulation units according to manufacturer's written instructions. Stagger end joints and tightly abut insulation units. D. Protect below-grade insulation on vertical surfaces from damage during backfilling by applying protection course with joints butted. Set in adhesive according to insulation manufacturer's written instructions. E. Protect top surface of horizontal insulation from damage during concrete work by applying protection course with joints butted. 3.5 INSTALLATION OF CAVITY-WALL INSULATION A. On units of foam-plastic board insulation, install pads of adhesive spaced approximately 24 inches o.c. both ways on inside face, and as recommended by manufacturer. Fit courses of insulation between wall ties and other obstructions, with edges butted tightly in both directions. Press units firmly against inside substrates indicated. B. Supplement adhesive attachment of insulation by securing boards with two-piece wall ties designed for this purpose and specified in Division 04 Section "Unit Masonry." 3.6 INSTALLATION OF GENERAL BUILDING INSULATION A. Apply insulation units to substrates by method indicated, complying with manufacturer's written instructions. If no specific method is indicated, bond units to substrate with adhesive or use mechanical anchorage to provide permanent placement and support of units. B. Seal joints between foam-plastic insulation units by applying adhesive, mastic, or sealant to edges of each unit to form a tight seal as units are shoved into place. Fill voids in completed installation with adhesive, mastic, or sealant as recommended by insulation manufacturer. C. Set vapor-retarder-faced units with vapor retarder to warm side of construction, unless otherwise indicated. D. Tape joints and ruptures in vapor retarder, and seal each continuous area of insulation to surrounding construction to ensure airtight installation. E. Stuff glass-fiber loose-fill insulation into miscellaneous voids and cavity spaces where shown. Compact to approximately 40 percent of normal maximum volume equaling a density of approximately 2.5 lb/cu. ft INSTALLATION OF INSULATION IN CEILINGS FOR SOUND ATTENUATION A. Install 4 thick, unfaced glass-fiber blanket insulation over suspended ceilings at partitions in a width that extends insulation 48 inches on either side of partitions HC1-033
9 3.9 INSTALLATION OF VAPOR RETARDERS SECTION A. General: Extend vapor retarder to extremities of areas to be protected from vapor transmission. Secure in place with adhesives or other anchorage system as indicated. Extend vapor retarder to cover miscellaneous voids in insulated substrates including those filled with loose-fiber insulation. B. Seal joints caused by pipes, conduits, electrical boxes, and similar items penetrating vapor retarders with vapor-retarder tape to create an airtight seal between penetrating objects and vapor retarder. C. Repair tears or punctures in vapor retarders immediately before concealment by other work. Cover with vapor-retarder tape or another layer of vapor retarder PROTECTION A. Protect installed insulation and vapor retarders from damage due to harmful weather exposures, physical abuse, and other causes. Provide temporary coverings or enclosures where insulation is subject to abuse and cannot be concealed and protected by permanent construction immediately after installation. END OF SECTION HC
