3 1.0 Introduction Application This Technical Data Sheet is designed to provide information of sufficient content and detail as to enable engineers, competent in structural analysis & structural steelwork design to safely design structures incorporating our MAT 75 and MAT 125 Systems. Design Codes MAT 75 is a modular system (previously known as L-Trestle or Military Trestling), MAT 125 is similar to, but has greater capacity than the MAT 75 system. This system is also modular and MAT 125 Columns are fully compatible with MAT 75 Bracing and Grillage items. Both systems are for use primarily in temporary works, and as such complies with the following codes: BS 449:1969 inc Amendment - Specification for the use of Structural Steel in Buildings BS 5975: Code of Practice for Temporary Works Procedures and the Permissible Stress Design of Falsework Due to its robustness and versatility, MAT 75 and MAT 125 have also become increasingly used for the temporary support of permanent highway structures during their strengthening and repair. In order to comply with Highways Agency Technical Approval Procedures, the more onerous requirements of the following two codes have been adopted: In the production of this manual, BS 5400: Part 3:2000 Code of Practice for the Design of Steel Bridges analysis has been carried out to the BS 5950: Part 1:2000 and Part 5: Structural use of Steelwork in Buildings latest revisions of these codes. Eurocodes The equipment is currently being assessed to Eurocodes. Strengths relating to these codes will be published in a future revision to this document. Please refer to Mabey Hire engineering team for the latest information. Safe Working Loads The safe working loads for members and joints given in the Technical Data Sheet are generally based on theoretical values calculated in accordance with BS 449 & BS 5975 but with additional safety factors applied to ensure a minimum factor of safety of 2.0. In many cases full scale laboratory tests have been carried out & compared to the calculated values. In all cases a minimum factor of safety of 2.0 against the onset of permanent deformation has been established. All capacities are given as allowable working loads / strengths. In addition, the stated capacities maintain the factors of safety imposed by both BS 5400 and BS Technical Data The technical data provided within this data sheet concerns the strengths of the individual members and joints. MAT 75 and MAT 125 is most frequently used as a tower, where consideration will need to be given to: The overall height and configuration of the tower The method of application of the load Product Use For the handling and use of MAT 75 and MAT 125, please refer to the Product Information and Use Sheet ref. PIUMAT. Document Ref: TDSMAT Page No. 3 of mabey.com 3

21 2.0 Section Properties, Capacities & Weights Bracing Design Guidance Continued Assessment of Panel Shear Load Care should be taken to ensure that a valid assessment is carried out of the panel shear load. The panel shear is the horizontal component of the load in the brace(s). Consider amplification of Panel Shear load if loading is applied in a manner shown in examples, which could lead to a Panel Shear of 2 or 3 times H. these Example: Simple H Frames with Pinned Ends Panel shear load in H1 bracing = 2.0H Approx. Panel shear load in H2 bracing = 3.0H Approx. In practice, some form of fixity at the prop ends is common and will considerably reduce this effect e.g. bolting to beams or concrete. Use of low Angle Bracing Panel shear resistance is limited by the T bracket flange in most cases. As seen on the Panel Shear Limit Table, low angle bracing causes higher T bracket stresses resulting in lower bracing panel limits. Consider also the capacity of columns to resist bending and axial load combined to carry the shear. This may provide greater resistance. Example: Document Ref: TDSMAT Page No. 21 of mabey.com 21
