14 Ashlar Blend Remember Safety always comes first when operating power tools. Step 1 Base Preparation Surface vegetation must be removed from the area and can not be use as backfill material. If the soil where the wall will be located is made up of heavy clay or wet soils, or the areas have been previously excavated, remove entire material and replace with granular base, compacting in 8 in. ( mm) lis. How to Build a For a complete guide on how to plan, design and build your wall see the Allan Block Landscape Walls Reference Manual. Use the charts on page 7, to determine if the wall will be a Gravity Wall or a Reinforced Wall. Starting at the lowest point, dig a base trench the length of the wall at least in. wide by 1 in. deep (61 mm by mm). This will ensure that 6 in. (15 mm) of the base block is buried. Using a plate compactor, compact and level the trench. If the wall requires geogrid reinforcement, excavation behind the wall will be necessary to accommodate the design length of the geogrid. Check the approved plans to verify grid quantities and location. Place a minimum of 6 in. (15 mm) of wall rock,.5 in. to.75 in. (6. mm to19.1 mm), in the base trench, rake smooth level and compact. Check the entire length for level and adjust as needed. If you are building into a hillside, continue to excavate into the slope creating step-ups until you have reached the top. See the AB Design Guide or visit allanblock.com for more information on stepping up the base course. Step Base Course Starting at the lowest point of elevation, place the blocks on top of the compacted base, with the raised front lip facing up and forward. Install the blocks tight together checking each block for level and alignment from front to back and side to side. Using a string line, site down the back of the block to ensure the wall is straight. A drain pipe is required for walls over (1. m) tall or are constructed in silty sand or clay soils. Check the approved plans for location and venting information. Landscape Wall Step By Step Step Backfill Use approved on-site soils to fill in areas in front of the base course of blocks. Then using wall rock, fill the hollow cores and a minimum of 1 in. ( mm) behind the blocks. Use approved on-site soils to backfill the area behind the wall rock. Use a plate compactor to consolidate the wall and approved onsite soils behind the block. Compact in a direction that runs parallel with the wall for a minimum of passes with the plate compactor. Remove all excess material from the top of the blocks to prepare for the next course. This can be done with a push broom or when installing the next course, slide the blocks into place. If the wall requires reinforcement, jump ahead to page 8. If not, continue to Step. Step Additional Courses Install the next course of blocks with an offset (stagger) from the blocks below of at least in. (75 mm) or 1/ the length of the block. The block s vertical seams should not directly line up. Check again for level and alignment, adjusting where necessary. Once again, fill the hollow cores and behind the block with wall rock, using approved on-site soil to fill behind the wall rock. From course and above, use a plate compactor to compact directly on the blocks and then compact the area behind the block. Compact in lis of 8 in. ( mm) or less, the standard height of a block. Check for level and alignment adjusting where necessary. Complete the wall to the desired height using the same process. Use 8 in. ( mm) of impermeable fill on the last li of the wall if plant material will be located up to the back of the wall (ie grass, flowers). For additional information on building with curves, stairs, patterns, terraces and much more, see the Allan Block Design Guide or visit allanblock.com Typical Gravity Wall Cross Section Tools & Equipment you may need HAND TOOLS Safety glasses, gloves, dust mask, ear protection, knee pads, level, torpedo level, tape measure, string line, chisel, rubber mallet, shims, broom, round and square shovel. POWER TOOLS Plate compactor, concrete saw with diamond blade, bobcat, transit/site level. Using a rubber mallet, modify the blocks where necessary to ensure a straight and level base course. Irregularities in the base course become larger as the wall stacks up. A small amount of coarse sand could help in setting the base course. Base & Backfill Material - Wall Rock For your wall rock material, use crushed rock that varies in size from.5 in. to.75 in. (6. mm to 19.1 mm). This will compact well, and still allow for good drainage. So wet clays or spongy organic soils should not be used as the approved on-site soils. These soils will not compact well, and continue to settle aer construction. 5 6
15 Does your wall need reinforcement? Conditions above and behind the wall will determine how high the wall can go before reinforcement is needed. Use the chart below to find the maximum height you can build a gravity wall before reinforcement is required. Walls may require a building permit and engineering, check with your local municipality before starting construction. Gravity Walls rely on their own weight and setback to hold the wall in place. Reinforced Walls combine the Allan Block units with geogrid soil reinforcement to create a strong and stable wall. Gravity Wall Build a Lasting Structure with the Allan Block up to Advanced Soil Reinforcement Grid. For6.walls (1.8 m) high Walls that typically require grid will be reinforced on every other course to the top of the wall. Check the appropriate Allan Block Product Sheet to see if your wall needs grid. Reinforced Walls Roll out grid Match your wall to the conditions below to find which width of AB Reinforcement Grid to use, and the number of layers you need. To determine the number of rolls needed, multiply the length of your wall by the number of layers needed, and then divide by 5 (the length of a roll of grid). Level AB Stones 1 WALL HEIGHT No. of Layers Width (W) No. of Layers Width (W) No. of Layers Width (W) No. of Layers Width (W) (.9 m) (1. m) 5 (1.5 m) 6 (1.8 m) (.9 m) (1. m) 5 (1.5 m) 6 (1.8 m) (.9 m) (1. m) 5 (1.5 m) 6 (1.8 m) CLAY SOIL SANDY SOIL CLAY SOIL SANDY SOIL Stake grid Slope :1 Example: For the complete library of Allan Block literature, design ideas, installation videos and more, visit allanblock.com. Using the Ashlar Collection 6 block, a 5 high wall (1.5 m) built in sandy soil with a sloped surface above the wall requires three layers of geogrid, wide (.9 m). Soil reinforcement increases the strength of the wall by creating a reinforced mass of soil behind the blocks. The weight of the reinforced soil mass combines with the blocks for a heavier, stronger wall. The above chart is for estimating AB Reinforcement Grid quantities only. For more technical information, such as building stairs, terraces, ending and topping off walls visit our website at allanblock.com 7 Step 5: Install grid on the top of the third course, aer it has been cominstall grid on every pacted and leveled, by repeating Step. Continue this same process for other course every other course to the top of the wall or to where no more layers of grid are necessary according to the charts on the AB product sheets. Inside Corners Outside Corners Reinforced Wall Cross Section Alternate placement on every other layer When placing grid for inside corners, extend the grid past the corner. Alternate this grid placement on every other layer so the grid extends past from the opposite direction every other time. On outside corners, simple lay grid into the corner and cut to fit with a utility knife. Outside Curves Inside Curves Fan Out Additional Assistance Refer to the Allan Block Design Guide for a complete description of the wall design and construction for walls up to 6 (1.8 m) high. Compact NEVER compact directly or drive on the AB Reinforcement Grid or operate heavy machinery WITHIN (.9 m) of the wall. Heavy machinery may cause the wall to rotate forward out of alignment! Surcharge 15 psf Step : Stack the second course of block on top of the grid, so that the blocks are offset from the blocks below. Pull on the back of the grid to remove any slack and stake in place if necessary. Step : Fill the hollow cores and behind the block as described in Step 1. Compact the entire area with the first pass directly over the top of the blocks. Check for level and alignment, adjusting as necessary. Install the third course of block, backfilling and compacting again as described in Step 1. Soil Reinforcement Chart Ashlar and Europa Collection 6 Backfill Step : Roll out the bi-axial AB Reinforcement Grid behind the wall with the edge of the grid against the raised front lip of the block. Install next course CONDITION ABOVE WALL Step 1: Install the base course of block and fill the hollow cores and 1 in. ( mm) behind the wall with wall rock. Backfill behind the wall rock with on-site soils and compact the entire area in maximum 8 in. ( mm) lis. Check for level and alignment, making adjustments as necessary. Overlap Alternate placement on every other layer The grid should follow the back of raised front lip on the top of the block. Simply cut the grid with a utility knife and fan out on outside curves or overlap to follow inside curves. 8
