1 Construction Youth Trust Mobile Classroom Programme Construction Youth Trust Project Team Adeeb Ahsan NW & Yorkshire Regional Manager Natasha Rowson NW Projects Assistant Lee Farnell NW Trainer We consider the concept of the mobile classroom is an excellent one - it enables us, with Construction Youth Trust, to take the message about the exciting careers available in construction right into the heart of the communities we serve Tony Ellender, Training and Development Manager, Balfour Beatty Construction Youth Trust CUBE Centre for the Urban Built Environment 1 st Floor Portland Street Manchester M1 6DW

2 Construction Youth Trust Mobile Classroom Programme 1. Introduction Construction Youth Trust, in its 50 th year, continues to provide a range of projects to young people across the U.K. The Trust works with young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to promote the diversity of careers available within the sector through a range of programmes including its Mobile Classroom programmes. These have been successfully running for a number of years in London and Wales and more recently in Manchester. The specialist nature of the work of the Trust and the flexibility that the Mobile Classroom offers means that the Trust is well placed to offer construction courses which can help to re-engage young people in meaningful training, boosting their confidence, and opening up further training and job opportunities. Young people on a construction site visit organised by the Trust 2. CYT Skills and Experience The Construction Youth Trust Young People into Construction Programme consists of 4 main elements, the main element of which is the Mobile Classroom Programme. Construction Youth Trust s Mobile Classroom is a fully equipped construction van with all the necessary tools, materials and qualified trainer to deliver construction skills in any community location. The Mobile Classroom brings meaningful vocational learning into the heart of communities and offers a first point of engagement for young people not in education, employment, or training (NEET). CYT acknowledges that for some young people distance can be a barrier to learning. Over a 40 hour course the Mobile Classroom provides young people aged with multi-skills training in carpentry, painting and decorating, tiling, and plumbing. (See appendix A for further details). 3. Programme Mobile classroom participant measuring and cutting wall tiles 1

3 The Construction Youth Trust programme offers a progressive development of the skills and interest of young people from disadvantaged backgrounds to gain entry into the construction industry. The participants of the programme are selected according to the needs of the organisation particularly young people from the NEET category or those that face social or economic barriers in relation to their entry into the industry. The programme offers a multi-stage process that progressively trains and develops individuals through offering a learning experience that can provide a stepping stone into construction work experience placements, employment or further education. The programme will enable the client to recruit a number of suitable and motivated young people into their existing business through the provision of construction employment, training or apprenticeships. The model below shows the progression routes of 8 participants on the mobile classroom based on 4 participants completing only the OCN qualification, and 4 continuing to develop their skills within a domestic environment - 2 completing their CSCS card training and 2 progressing into a work experience placement. Typical Mobile Classroom Progression Routes Mobile Classroom (8) General Application CSCS Card (2) Site Visit (8) Further Education (2) Work Experience Placement The proposal comprises three elements: i. Selection Eight participants to the programme will be selected from the local community according their suitability and based on the client s aspirations. The participants would include young people that had some experience of construction through temporary work or college courses, as well as those that had no prior construction experience but aspired to gain an entry level qualification. 2

4 ii. Mobile Classroom Programme The selection stage leads onto the Mobile Classroom Programme which provides an introduction to multi-skills in construction through the provision of an 8-week Open College Network (OCN) accredited programme designed to provide entry level construction skills and is delivered by a qualified construction trainer. The programme can assist young people from disadvantaged backgrounds particularly those that are: Not in employment, training or education; or Young ex-offenders or those at risk of offending, or, From areas of high deprivation. iii. Site Visit and Construction Work Experience Placement The progression route following the successful completion of the mobile classroom programme would lead onto a work experience placement for 2 young people with the client. By this stage of the programme the selected young people would have demonstrated a strong commitment to work and a desire to work in the industry through undertaking their Multi Skills in Construction OCN Qualification. For those wishing to undertake their Construction Skills Certification Scheme training as an alternative progression route, 2 selected participants would be trained and tested in order to obtain their CSCS card. 4. Typical Programme* 6-8 week programme, 8 participants, 1 day/week Open College Network (OCN) Accredited and non-accredited programmes Total cost of programme Programme Elements Introduction to the Mobile Classroom Programme An introduction to the programme and an overview of potential construction careers. Mobile Classroom Programme 6-8 week course in multi-skills construction, includes: 40 hour programme for 8 learners inclusive of trainer time, project assistant time, materials and course literature. Site Visit Site visit to construction development. Trainees meet construction staff on site, construction industry briefing, site health and safety, and site tour. 7 APPENDIX B ABOUT THE TRUST Construction Youth Trust is a registered charity working with young people to help them access opportunities in the construction industry at both craft and professional level. The Trust supports young people whose journey to work can be challenging, due to barriers relating to their financial circumstances, lack of awareness of opportunities, low self-esteem, gender or ethnicity. We provide an integrated service that enables young people to: raise their industry awareness and aspirations increase their confidence acquire experience in the industry receive careers advice, guidance and mentoring access training and employment opportunities Here are some quotes from a few of our beneficiaries and supporters: I think it s great and will really encourage people to find out more about construction. It s nice to have something portable as not all communities have these kinds of facilities. Bilal, Mobile Classroom, London When an opportunity like this comes along you ve got to grab it with both hands, it ll give me the freedom to do what I want to do. I was unemployed for a year and now can t wait to start work and invest in my future. The Real Apprentice You re Hired! Winner, Craig Simpson I never imagined I d be able to do all these jobs by myself but now I feel confident enough to turn my hand to most things. Sarah, Pink Lady, Bettws I was delighted to meet one of your young ladies. She was extremely well presented and a good ambassador for your organisation. She has been selected out of 76 applicants that were interviewed. She has done extremely well. K&M Decorating Together we can make a real difference to young people s lives and provide the industry s future workforce. We support employment and training projects focused on local needs and Construction Youth Trust does exactly that. - Francis Salway, Land Securities Group We are delighted to be supporting Construction Youth Trust with its programmes. They are extremely worthwhile and it's very rewarding to see the change in the young people - Mary O Shaughnessy, Enterprise We re delighted to be supporting Construction Youth Trust in this very important endeavour - the mobility factor of this classroom gives more young people the opportunity to try things out that they may not otherwise have been able to - Sarah Barrett, Mears 6
