1 SECTION ASPHALT PAVING PART 1 GENERAL 1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS a) Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including the General and Supplementary General Conditions and Division 00 & 01 specification sections, apply to work of this section. 1.2 DESCRIPTION OF WORK a) Work of this Section includes but is not limited to: 1. Aggregates 2. Hot Mix Asphalt Concrete 3. Liquid Asphalts 4. Geotextile Support Fabric 1.3 DELIVERY, HANDLING, STORAGE a) Deliver all container materials in manufacturer's standard, unopened containers with labels legible and intact. Store and protect from damage, freezing, or sunlight and heat, if required of individual product. b) Store all materials and other items where damage and/or contamination will not occur. PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.1 MATERIALS a) Aggregates 1. Crushed Run2of2Bank gravel conforming to NYSDOT Item 304 Type 1 coarse aggregate, well graded from coarse to fine and of such size that: Sieve Size Designation Percent Passing By Weight 3 inch inch /4 inch No No

Run of Crusher: Either crushed limestone or crushed gravel in a homogeneous mixture from dust to maximum particle size conforming to NYSDOT Item 304 Type 4, and of such size that: Sieve Size Designation Percent Passing By Weight 2 inch 100 1/4 inch No No Crushed stone or washed graded gravel as indicated on the contract drawings shall conform to NYSDOT Table b) Geotextile Support Fabric: Shall conform to NYSDOT Section 207 Types: Bedding, Undercut, Underdrain or Slope Protection as denoted on plans and as specified in Section c) Asphalt Concrete 1. Binder Course: Shall conform to NYSDOT Item 403, Type 3 Binder Course, delivery temperature min 275 degrees2325 degrees F. 2. Surface Course: Shall conform to NYSDOT Item 403, Type 7 Top Course, delivery temperature min 275 degrees2325 degrees F. 3. Bituminous Concrete mix designs need to be produced by an approved registered NYSDOT facility. 4. Bituminous Concrete materials need to be NYSDOT approved mix design with NYSDOT approved aggregates signed by a Regional Materials Engineer. 5. Before paving is to begin a copy of the NYSDOT mix designs shall be submitted and approved by the architect. d) Liquid Asphalts 1. Tack Coat 2 Shall conform to NYSDOT Item Asphalt Emulsion. e) Pavement Marking Paint 1. Shall meet NYSDOT item yellow pavement marking specification
3 PART 3 EXECUTION 3.1 HOT MIX ASPHALT CONCRETE PAVEMENT a) General: All courses of aggregates for vehicular pavement and the final shaping of the sub grade shall be by a self2propelled six2wheeled road grader with an underbelly blade which, when angled shall have a minimum effective grading width of 10 feet. Grading for vehicular pavements by use of a bulldozer is not acceptable. b) Preparation of Sub grade: The sub grade previously established under these specifications shall be rechecked, and if necessary, reshaped, rolled, and uniformly compacted to conform with the cross section and grade of the new pavement. All boulders, organic material, soft clay, spongy materials, and other deleterious materials encountered during this operation shall be removed and replaced with an approved material prior to placing the aggregate sub2base. c) Stone Course 1. Placement: No existing subbase material shall be re2used on site. Deposit specified stone course material to uniform depth, in lifts, after compaction, in accordance with the contract drawings as follows: a. Total depth less than 9" 2 one lift. b. Total depth 9" or over2 two equal lifts. 2. Compaction: Compact all material immediately following the spreading of each layer of stone course, to the full depth by means of a power driven roller or vibra2tamper with an effective weight of not less than 10 tons for vehicular pavement and 3 tons for pedestrian pavement. Compaction shall progress gradually from the sides to the center, parallel with the longitudinal centerline of the pavement, unless otherwise specified. When self2propelled rollers are used in the compaction of pavement, each pass of the roller shall lap the preceding by one2half the width of the track and shall continue until the entire surface of the aggregate has been compacted and thoroughly keyed. Compact all sub2base material to 95% density in accordance with the Compaction Standards outlined in Section Reduce the interstices in the stone to a minimum, and continue compaction until no movement is perceptible ahead of the roller or tamper. Correct any irregularities or depressions that develop during the compaction by loosening the material in the affected areas and adding or removing aggregate until the surface is smooth, uniform, and approximately true to grade
4 d) Asphalt Concrete Binder and Surface Courses: The contractor shall construct a two course asphalt concrete surface pavement installed in accordance with the required grade, thickness, and cross section indicated on the contract drawings and in the manner stated in these specifications. 1. Tack Coat is always required between the binder and surface courses. a. Timing 2 Immediately prior to placing the asphalt concrete surface course(s), clean the surface of the base course of all deleterious matter and allow to thoroughly dry. b. Location 2 Where shown on Contract Drawings or where any break in construction schedule between placement of subsequent courses, or wherever paving fabric is required. c. Coverage 2 Evenly apply a tack coat of liquid asphalt at a rate of between.05 and.10 gallons per square yard. Full coverage is not desired: coat with a "salt and pepper" appearance. 2. Asphalt Concrete Binder and Top Courses: After the base course or tack coat have been completed, apply the asphalt plant mix binder and top courses in the following manner: a. Deliver: Do not deliver asphalt concrete until immediately prior to the time of spreading. The specified temperature of the mixture at time of delivery assumes weather conditions, which are not detrimental to the mix. Do not schedule delivery during adverse weather. b. Placing 2 Place the required surface course(s) of asphalt concrete upon the previously prepared base course to a uniform depth after compaction, as indicated on the contract drawings. Apply all materials by means of self2propelled mechanical spreaders or by the use of hand methods, using hot shovels, forks and rakes. Spreading and compaction operations shall be carefully and skillfully executed in such a manner that a minimum amount of back patching will be required. Placing of the mixture shall be as continuous as possible and rollers shall not pass over the unprotected edge of the freshly laid mixture. Joints, when required, due to the discontinuation of work, shall be well bonded and sealed in such a manner as to create an integral appearance. Joints in binder and top courses shall be offset a minimum of two feet horizontally. Care shall be exercised by workmen at all times to avoid walking on freshly spread material
5 c. Compaction: Tamping shall be done along curbs, adjacent to catch basins and manholes, and only in those places which are inaccessible to a roller. At all places not accessible to the roller, thorough compaction must be achieved and the joints between these structures and the asphalt mixture must be effectively sealed. Subsequent to spreading in those areas accessible to a roller, the mixture shall be thoroughly compacted to a depth as indicated on the contract drawings by a power driven roller weighing not less than 10 tons, as soon after being spread as it will bear the roller without undue displacement. Rolling shall start longitudinally (at curbs) and proceed towards the center of the pavement overlapping on successive trips by at least one2half the width of the track. An alternate pattern of compaction may be specified by the Owner s Representative. 3. Top Course: After the binder course has been applied, the surface course shall be installed. The contractor shall coordinate the application of the upper courses for new and existing asphaltic pavements so that the finished surface of both top courses will be uniformly level. Any irregularities or depressions in the existing pavement shall be corrected by placing additional asphaltic concrete. 4. Compaction: While the material is still hot, the mixture shall be thoroughly and uniformly compacted by means of a power driven roller weighing not less than 10 tons. The mixture shall not be allowed to become chilled before initial compression. Rolling shall proceed as stated in the previous paragraph. At no time shall the top course be rolled until all places inaccessible to a roller, such as curbs, catch basins, manholes, and all other structures, have been tamped thoroughly. e) Seasonal Limits and Quality of Asphalt Work: Asphalt concrete pavement shall be installed upon previous courses which are clean, dry, and free from standing water, and only when weather conditions are suitable. 1. Temperature: Do not install asphalt material when the temperature of the air is below 50 degrees F., or during inclement weather. All cold joints shall be sealed with a rapid curing liquid asphalt. 2. Defective Pavement: Portions of the completed pavement which are defective in finish, compaction or elevation, or that do not comply in all respects with the requirements of the contract documents, shall be taken up, removed and replaced with suitable material, and properly installed in accordance with the contract documents. 3. Settlement: Any settlement exceeding 1/8" in 10' or 1/4" total depression, which occurs in any asphalt work within one year after final acceptance, shall be entirely removed and brought to proper grade and repaired, to the satisfaction of the Owner s Representative. f) WARRANTY: All pavement shall be warranted as to workmanship and materials for
6 the period of one2year following final acceptance of the entire project. Any change of acceptance date shall be executed in writing with the Owner and administered by the Owner s Representative. 3.2 PARKING AREA AND TRAFFIC MARKER PAINTING a) The contractor shall paint solid lines using two coats of paint in those areas indicated on the contract drawings and as, hereinafter, specified. Lines shall be painted immediately after all aspects of the paving operations have been completed and before dirt can accumulate on the pavement surface. b) Protection: Install adequate barricades at points where trespassing can occur immediately after paving is completed so as to prevent vehicles or pedestrians from impeding the painting operation. c) Method: Carefully layout and define all painted lines on the surface of the pavement by means of chalk markings before painting and accurately paint all lines within the limits and to the dimensions indicated on the contract drawings. All surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned before lines are painted. d) All lines shall be clear and distinct with sharply defined edges. Apply two coats of paint. At least 24 hours shall elapse between the painting of the first and second coats. e) Removal of Equipment: Upon completion of the painting operation and once the paint has dried, remove all barricades and other debris that has resulted from this operation. 3.3 ASPHALT PRICE ADJUSTMENT A. Contractor shall determine the price of the Asphalt material based on the current NYSDOT Index price at the time of the Bid as published on the NYSDOT website. Price is $535 per ton. The standard NYSDOT Escalation clause will be used for this project. Contractor shall use the NYSDOT Asphalt Price Adjustment for the conversion factor to aid in determining the Asphalt Price Adjustment at the actual time of installation. Refer to the NYSDOT website to determine the formula for price increases and decreases. Price differences will be adjusted through change orders to the contract. END OF SECTION
