ABOUT THE COVER The design team of The Summit, an adult activity and fi tness center, achieved their goal of energy effi ciency when they created a series of canopies that cast a signifi cant shadow on the complex. Made of Perforated Metal from McNICHOLS, the canopies helped reduce the effects of the summer heat and lowered utility costs. Using Aluminum Perforated Metal on such a large portion of the structure, many up to 2 stories tall and nearly 23 feet wide, also gave it a surprisingly light appearance. More than 1,000 Perforated Panels were installed in two sizes: 1/4-inch thick aluminum with 1/4-inch round holes on 1/2-inch staggered centers and 1/8-inch thick aluminum with 3/16-inch round holes on 5/16-inch staggered centers. The design team was also able to achieve air circulation and light transmission by applying McNICHOLS Perforated Panels to the face of the steel columns, which are set approximately 4 feet apart and hold up the canopies.
