1 SECTION VISUAL DISPLAY SURFACES PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section. 1.2 SUMMARY A. Section Includes: 1. Markerboards. 2. Tackboards. 1.3 DEFINITIONS A. Tackboard: Framed or unframed, tackable, visual display board assembly. B. Visual Display Board Assembly: Visual display surface that is factory fabricated into composite panel form, either with or without a perimeter frame; includes chalkboards, markerboards, and tackboards. 1.4 ACTION SUBMITTALS A. Make Submittals in accordance with Division 01 Section Submittal Procedures. B. Product Data: For each type of product indicated. Include construction details, material descriptions, dimensions of individual components and profiles, and finishes for visual display surfaces. C. Shop Drawings: For visual display surfaces. Include plans, elevations, sections, details, and attachments to other work. 1. Show locations of panel joints. 2. Show locations of special-purpose graphics for visual display surfaces. 3. Include sections of typical trim members. D. Samples for Verification: For each type of visual display surface indicated. 1. Visual Display Surface: Not less than 8-1/2 by 11 inches (215 by 280 mm), mounted on substrate indicated for final Work. Include one panel for each type, color, and texture required. 2. Trim: 6-inch- (152-mm-) long sections of each trim profile. 3. Accessories: Full-size Sample of each type of accessory. E. Product Schedule: For visual display surfaces. 2 1.5 INFORMATIONAL SUBMITTALS A. Product Test Reports: Based on evaluation of comprehensive tests performed by a qualified testing agency, for surface-burning characteristics of fabrics. B. Warranties: Sample of special warranties. 1.6 CLOSEOUT SUBMITTALS A. Maintenance Data: For visual display surfaces to include in maintenance manuals. 1.7 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Source Limitations: Obtain visual display surfaces from single source from single manufacturer. B. Surface-Burning Characteristics: As determined by testing identical products according to ASTM E 84 by a qualified testing agency. Identify products with appropriate markings of applicable testing agency. 1. Flame-Spread Index: 25 or less. 2. Smoke-Developed Index: 450 or less. 1.8 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Deliver factory-built visual display surfaces, including factory-applied trim where indicated, completely assembled in one piece without joints, where possible. If dimensions exceed maximum manufactured panel size, provide two or more pieces of equal length as acceptable to Architect. When overall dimensions require delivery in separate units, prefit components at the factory, disassemble for delivery, and make final joints at the site. B. Store visual display surfaces vertically with packing materials between each unit. 1.9 PROJECT CONDITIONS A. Environmental Limitations: Do not deliver or install visual display surfaces until spaces are enclosed and weathertight, wet work in spaces is complete and dry, work above ceilings is complete, and temporary HVAC system is operating and maintaining ambient temperature and humidity conditions at occupancy levels during the remainder of the construction period. B. Field Measurements: Verify actual dimensions of construction contiguous with visual display surfaces by field measurements before fabrication. 1. Allow for trimming and fitting where taking field measurements before fabrication might delay the Work. VISUAL DISPLAY SURFACES

3 1.10 WARRANTY A. Special Warranty for Porcelain-Enamel Face Sheets: Manufacturer's standard form in which manufacturer agrees to repair or replace porcelain-enamel face sheets that fail in materials or workmanship within specified warranty period. 1. Failures include, but are not limited to, the following: a. Surfaces lose original writing and erasing qualities. b. Surfaces exhibit crazing, cracking, or flaking. 2. Warranty Period: 50 years from date of Substantial Completion. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 MATERIALS, GENERAL A. Porcelain-Enamel Face Sheet: Manufacturer's standard steel sheet with porcelain-enamel coating fused to steel; uncoated thickness indicated. 1. Gloss Finish: Gloss as indicated; dry-erase markers wipe clean with dry cloth or standard eraser. B. Natural Cork Sheet: Seamless, single-layer, compressed fine-grain cork sheet; bulletin board quality; face sanded for natural finish with surface-burning characteristics indicated. C. Particleboard: ANSI A208.1, Grade M-1, made with binder containing no urea formaldehyde. D. Extruded Aluminum: ASTM B 221 (ASTM B 221M), Alloy MARKERBOARD ASSEMBLIES (key note designation 10116) A. Porcelain-Enamel Markerboards: Balanced, high-pressure, factory-laminated markerboard assembly of three-ply construction consisting of backing sheet, core material, and porcelainenamel face sheet with low-gloss finish. 1. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, available manufacturers offering products that may be incorporated into the Work include, but are not limited to, the following: a. Best-Rite Manufacturing. b. Claridge Products and Equipment, Inc. c. Ghent Manufacturing, Inc. d. Marsh Industries, Inc.; Visual Products Group. e. PolyVision Corporation; a Steelcase company. 2. Particleboard Core: 1/2 inch (13 mm) thick; with inch- (0.35-mm-) thick, galvanized-steel sheet backing. 3. Laminating Adhesive: Manufacturer's standard, moisture-resistant thermoplastic type. 2.3 TACKBOARD ASSEMBLIES (key note designation 10121) A. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, available manufacturers offering products that may be incorporated into the Work include, but are not limited to, the following: 1. Best-Rite Manufacturing. 2. Claridge Products and Equipment, Inc. VISUAL DISPLAY SURFACES

4 3. Ghent Manufacturing, Inc. 4. Marsh Industries, Inc.; Visual Products Group. 5. PolyVision Corporation; a Steelcase company. B. Natural-Cork Tackboard: 1/4-inch- (6-mm-) thick, natural cork sheet factory laminated to 1/4- inch- (6-mm-) thick particleboard backing. 2.4 MARKERBOARD AND TACKBOARD ACCESSORIES A. Aluminum Frames and Trim: Fabricated from not less than inch- (1.57-mm-) thick, extruded aluminum; standard size and shape. 1. Field-Applied Trim: Manufacturer's standard, snap-on trim with no visible screws or exposed joints. B. Chalktray: Manufacturer's standard, continuous. 1. Solid Type: Extruded aluminum with ribbed section and smoothly curved exposed ends. C. Map Rail: Provide the following accessories: 1. Display Rail: Continuous and integral with map rail; fabricated from cork approximately 1 to 2 inches (25 to 50 mm) wide. 2. End Stops: Located at each end of map rail. D. Special-Purpose Graphics: Fuse or paint the following graphics into surface of porcelainenamel visual display unit: 1. Basketball court. 2.5 FABRICATION A. Porcelain-Enamel Visual Display Assemblies: Laminate porcelain-enamel face sheet and backing sheet to core material under heat and pressure with manufacturer's standard flexible, waterproof adhesive. B. Visual Display Boards: Field assemble visual display boards unless otherwise indicated. 1. Where factory-applied trim is indicated, trim shall be assembled and attached to visual display boards at manufacturer's factory before shipment. C. Aluminum Frames and Trim: Fabricate units straight and of single lengths, keeping joints to a minimum. Miter corners to a neat, hairline closure. 1. Where factory-applied trim is indicated, trim shall be assembled and attached to visual display units at manufacturer's factory before shipment. 2.6 GENERAL FINISH REQUIREMENTS A. Comply with NAAMM's "Metal Finishes Manual for Architectural and Metal Products" for recommendations for applying and designating finishes. B. Protect mechanical finishes on exposed surfaces from damage by applying a strippable, temporary protective covering before shipping. VISUAL DISPLAY SURFACES

5 C. Appearance of Finished Work: Noticeable variations in same piece are not acceptable. Variations in appearance of adjoining components are acceptable if they are within the range of approved Samples and are assembled or installed to minimize contrast. 2.7 ALUMINUM FINISHES A. Clear Anodic Finish: AAMA 611, AA-M12C22A31, Class II, mm or thicker. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION A. Examine substrates and conditions, with Installer present, for compliance with requirements for installation tolerances, surface conditions of wall, and other conditions affecting performance of the Work. B. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. 3.2 PREPARATION A. Comply with manufacturer's written instructions for surface preparation. 3.3 INSTALLATION, GENERAL A. Install visual display surfaces in locations and at mounting heights indicated on Drawings, or if not indicated, at heights indicated below. Keep perimeter lines straight, level, and plumb. Provide grounds, clips, backing materials, adhesives, brackets, anchors, trim, and accessories necessary for complete installation. 1. Mounting Height: 36 inches (914 mm) above finished floor to top of chalktray. 3.4 INSTALLATION OF FIELD-FABRICATED VISUAL DISPLAY BOARDS AND ASSEMBLIES A. Field-Assembled Visual Display Units: Coordinate field-assembled units with grounds, trim, and accessories indicated. Join parts with a neat, precision fit. 1. Make joints only where total length exceeds maximum manufactured length. Fabricate with minimum number of joints, balanced around center of board, as acceptable to Architect. 2. Provide manufacturer's standard vertical-joint spline system between abutting sections of markerboards. 3. Provide manufacturer's standard mullion trim at joints between markerboards and tackboards of combination units. 4. Where size of visual display boards or other conditions require support in addition to normal trim, provide structural supports or modify trim as indicated or as selected by Architect from manufacturer's standard structural support accessories to suit conditions indicated. 6 3.5 CLEANING AND PROTECTION A. Clean visual display surfaces according to manufacturer's written instructions. Attach one cleaning label to visual display surface in each room. B. Touch up factory-applied finishes to restore damaged or soiled areas. C. Cover and protect visual display surfaces after installation and cleaning. END OF SECTION VISUAL DISPLAY SURFACES

7 SECTION DIRECTORIES PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section. 1.2 SUMMARY A. Section includes: nonilluminated, message-strip directories. B. Related Sections: 1. Section "Visual Display Surfaces" for tackboards. 2. Section "Display Cases" for bulletin boards and display cases with tackable surfaces. 3. Section "Signage" for panel-sign-type directories, dimensional letters, and plaques. 1.3 ACTION SUBMITTALS A. Make Submittals in accordance with Division 01 Section Submittal Procedures. B. Product Data: For each type of product indicated. Include construction details, material descriptions, dimensions of individual components and profiles, and finishes for directories. C. Shop Drawings: For directories. Include plans, elevations, sections, details, and attachments to other work. 1. Include sections of typical trim members. D. Samples for Verification: For each type of directory indicated, as follows: 1. Trim: 6-inch- (150-mm-) long sections of each trim profile including corner section. 2. Message Strips: Full-size Samples of message strips in color selected with sample of specified typography. E. Other Action Submittal: 1. Message-Strip Schedule: Layout of each directory and each message strip showing letter size, font, spacing, indents, text copy, and graphics. 1.4 MAINTENANCE MATERIAL SUBMITTALS A. Furnish extra materials that match products installed and that are packaged with protective covering for storage and identified with labels describing contents. DIRECTORIES

8 1. Message Strips: Full-size, blank strips equal to 10 percent of amount installed for each size indicated, but no fewer than 20 strips. 1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE A. Source Limitations: Obtain directories from single source from single manufacturer. B. Surface-Burning Characteristics: As determined by testing identical products according to ASTM E 84 by a qualified testing agency. Identify products with appropriate markings of applicable testing agency. 1. Flame-Spread Index: 25 or less. 2. Smoke-Developed Index: 450 or less. 1.6 PROJECT CONDITIONS A. Sheet: ASTM B 209 (ASTM B 209M). 2. Extruded Shapes: ASTM B 221 (ASTM B 221M), Alloy B. Clear Acrylic Sheet: ASTM D 4802, Category A-1 (cell-cast sheet), with Finish 1 (smooth or polished), and 6 mm thick unless otherwise indicated; colorless sheet with visible light transmittance of 92 percent measured per ASTM D C. Opaque Acrylic Sheet: ASTM D 4802, Category A-1 (cell-cast sheet), with Finish 1 (smooth or polished), and 6 mm thick unless otherwise indicated; colors as indicated. D. Fasteners: Provide screws, bolts, and other fastening devices made from same material as items being fastened, except provide hot-dip galvanized, stainless-steel, or aluminum fasteners for exterior applications. Provide types, sizes, and lengths to suit installation conditions. Use security fasteners where exposed to view. 2.2 MESSAGE-STRIP DIRECTORIES A. Nonilluminated, Message-Strip Directory: Factory-fabricated unit consisting of changeable message strips held in place by retainer frame enclosed in manufacturer's standard 1-1/2-to-2- inch- (38-to-50-mm-) deep perimeter frame; with aluminum-sheet rear cover panel and glazed cover. 9 1. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, available manufacturers offering products that may be incorporated into the Work include, but are not limited to, the following: a. ASI-Modulex. b. Best Sign Systems, Inc. c. Nelson-Harkins Industries. d. Poblocki Sign Company. e. Vomar Products, Inc. 2. Profiled Frame: Removable, clear acrylic sheet held in place by perimeter frame; with 4- inch- (100-mm-) high, molded-opaque-acrylic or molded-fiberglass profiled frame at top and bottom. a. Profiled-Frame Shape: Square. b. Profiled-Frame Color: As selected by Architect from full range of industry colors. c. Header Panel: Provide copy on top profiled frame that complies with requirements indicated on Drawings for size, style, spacing, content, height, location, material, and colors of graphics. d. Divider Color: As selected by Architect from full range of industry colors. 3. Applied-Copy Changeable Message Strips: Screen-printed copy or vinyl copy applied to 14-inch- (350-mm-) long, opaque acrylic strips. a. Message-Strip Color: As selected by Architect from manufacturer's full range. b. Message-Strip Height: 1 inch (25 mm). c. Letter Height: 3/8 inch (9.5 mm). d. Letter Style: As selected by Architect. e. Letter Color: As selected by Architect from manufacturer's full range. f. Letter Case: Capitals and lowercase. 4. Graphics Panel: Screen-printed graphics or vinyl graphics laminated to opaque acrylic sheet; held in place by interchangeable, interlocking plastic carrier. Provide graphics that comply with requirements indicated on Drawings for size, style, spacing, content, height, location, material, and colors. 5. Width: As indicated on Drawings. 6. Height: As indicated on Drawings. 7. Mounting: Surface mounted. 2.3 FABRICATION A. Fabricate directories to requirements indicated for dimensions, design, and thickness and finish of materials. Use metals and shapes of thickness and reinforcement to produce flat surfaces, free of oil canning, and to impart strength for size, design, and application indicated. B. Message-Strip Directories: Provide blank message strips for each carrier in entire directory. 2.4 GENERAL FINISH REQUIREMENTS A. Comply with NAAMM's "Metal Finishes Manual for Architectural and Metal Products" for recommendations for applying and designating finishes. B. Provide grounds, clips, backing materials, adhesives, brackets, anchors, trim, and accessories necessary for complete installation. 1. Mounting Height: 72 inches (1829 mm) above finished floor to top of directory. B. Surface-Mounted Directories: Attach directories to wall surfaces with concealed clips, hangers, or grounds fastened at not more than 16 inches (400 mm) o.c. Secure both top and bottom of directories to walls. 3.3 ADJUSTING AND CLEANING A. Touch up factory-applied finishes to restore damaged or soiled areas. END OF SECTION DIRECTORIES

11 SECTION PLAQUES PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section. 1.2 SUMMARY A. Section includes plaques. B. Related Requirements: 1. Section "Dimensional Letter Signage." 2. Section "Panel Signage" for signs, with or without frames, that are made of materials other than solid metal. 3. Section "Hydraulic Elevators" for code-required conveying equipment signage. 4. Section "Plumbing" for labels, tags, and nameplates for plumbing systems and equipment. 5. Section "HVAC" for labels, tags, and nameplates for HVAC systems and equipment. 6. Section "Electrical" for labels, tags, and nameplates for electrical equipment. 1.3 ACTION SUBMITTALS A. Make Submittals in accordance with Division 01 Section Submittal Procedures. B. Product Data: For each type of product. C. Shop Drawings: For plaques. 1. Include fabrication and installation details and attachments to other work. 2. Show plaque mounting heights, locations of supplementary supports to be provided by others, and accessories. 3. Samples for Verification: For each type of plaque showing all components and with the required finishes, in manufacturer's standard size unless otherwise indicated and as follows: 1. Plaques: Half-size Sample. 2. Exposed Accessories: Full-size Sample of each accessory type. E. Installer Qualifications: Manufacturer of products or an entity that employs installers and supervisors who are trained and approved by manufacturer. 1.7 WARRANTY A. Special Warranty: Manufacturer agrees to repair or replace components of plaques that fail in materials or workmanship within specified warranty period. 1. Failures include, but are not limited to, the following: a. Deterioration of finishes beyond normal weathering. 2. Warranty Period: Five years from date of Substantial Completion. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 PLAQUES A. Cast Plaque : Plaque with background texture, border, and characters having uniform faces, sharp corners, and precisely formed lines and profiles; and as follows: 1. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, available manufacturers offering products that may be incorporated into the Work include, but are not limited to, the following or equal: a. Gemini Incorporated. b. Matthews International Corporation; Bronze Division. c. Metal Arts; Division of L & H Mfg. Co. d. Metallic Arts. e. Nelson-Harkins Industries. f. Southwell Company (The). 2. Plaque Material: Cast bronze. 3. Plaque Thickness: 0.50 inch (12.7 mm). 4. Finishes: a. Integral Metal Finish: As selected by Architect from full range of industry finishes. b. Overcoat: Clear organic coating. 5. Background Texture: As selected by Architect from manufacturer's full range. 6. Integrally Cast Border Style: Double-raised line border. 7. Mounting: Rosette-head through fasteners. 8. Text and Typeface: typeface as selected by Architect from manufacturer's full range and variable content as scheduled. Finish raised characters to contrast with background. PLAQUES

13 2.2 MATERIALS A. Bronze Castings: ASTM B 584, alloy recommended by manufacturer and finisher for finish indicated. 2.3 ACCESSORIES A. Fasteners and Anchors: Manufacturer's standard as required for secure anchorage of plaques, noncorrosive and compatible with each material joined, and complying with the following: 1. Exposed Metal-Fastener Components, General: a. Fabricated from same basic metal and finish of fastened metal. b. Fastener Heads: For nonstructural connections, use flathead or oval countersunk screws and bolts with tamper-resistant spanner-head or one-way-head slots unless otherwise indicated. 2. Plaque Mounting Fasteners: a. Through Fasteners: Exposed metal fasteners matching plaque finish, with type of head indicated, installed in predrilled holes. 2.4 FABRICATION A. Provide manufacturer's standard plaques according to requirements indicated. 1. Provide rebates, lugs, and brackets necessary to assemble components and to attach to existing work. Drill and tap for required fasteners. 2. Castings: Fabricate castings free of warp, cracks, blowholes, pits, scale, sand holes, and other defects that impair appearance or strength. Grind, wire brush, sandblast, and buff castings to remove seams, gate marks, casting flash, and other casting marks before finishing. 2.5 GENERAL FINISH REQUIREMENTS A. Protect mechanical finishes on exposed surfaces from damage by applying a strippable, temporary protective covering before shipping. B. Appearance of Finished Work: Noticeable variations in same piece are not acceptable. Variations in appearance of adjoining components are acceptable if they are within the range of approved Samples and are assembled or installed to minimize contrast. 2.6 CLEAR ORGANIC COATING FOR COPPER-ALLOY FINISHES A. Clear Organic Coating: Clear, waterborne, air-drying, acrylic lacquer called "Incralac"; specially developed for coating copper-alloy products; consisting of a solution of methyl methacrylate copolymer with benzotriazole to prevent breakdown of the film in UV light; shop applied in two uniform coats per manufacturer's written instructions, with interim drying between coats and without runs or other surface imperfections, to a total dry film thickness of 1 mil (0.025 mm). 14 PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION A. Examine substrates, areas, and conditions, with Installer present, for compliance with requirements for installation tolerances and other conditions affecting performance of plaque work. B. Verify that plaque-support surfaces are within tolerances to accommodate plaques without gaps or irregularities between backs of plaques and support surfaces unless otherwise indicated. C. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. 3.2 INSTALLATION A. Install plaques using mounting methods indicated and according to manufacturer's written instructions. 1. Install plaques level, plumb, true to line, and at locations and heights indicated, with plaque surfaces free of distortion and other defects in appearance. 2. Before installation, verify that plaque surfaces are clean and free of materials or debris that would impair installation. B. Mounting Method: 1. Through Fasteners: Drill holes in substrate using predrilled holes in plaque as template. Countersink holes in plaque if required. Place plaque in position and flush to surface. Install through fasteners and tighten. 3.3 ADJUSTING AND CLEANING A. Remove and replace damaged or deformed plaques and plaques that do not comply with specified requirements. Replace plaques with damaged or deteriorated finishes or components that cannot be successfully repaired by finish touchup or similar minor repair procedures. B. Remove temporary protective coverings and strippable films as plaques are installed. C. On completion of installation, clean exposed surfaces of plaques according to manufacturer's written instructions, and touch up minor nicks and abrasions in finish. Maintain plaques in a clean condition during construction and protect from damage until acceptance by Owner. END OF SECTION PLAQUES

15 SECTION DIMENSIONAL LETTER SIGNAGE PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section. 1.2 SUMMARY A. Section Includes: 1. Cast dimensional characters. 2. Illuminated, fabricated channel dimensional characters. 1.3 DEFINITIONS A. Illuminated: Illuminated by lighting source integrally constructed as part of the sign unit. 1.4 COORDINATION A. Furnish templates for placement of electrical service embedded in permanent construction by other installers. 1.5 ACTION SUBMITTALS A. Make Submittals in accordance with Division 01 Section Submittal Procedures. B. Product Data: For each type of product. C. Shop Drawings: For dimensional letter signs. 1. Include fabrication and installation details and attachments to other work. 2. Show sign mounting heights, locations of supplementary supports to be provided by others, and accessories. 3. Install signs using mounting methods indicated and according to manufacturer's written instructions. 1. Install signs level, plumb, true to line, and at locations and heights indicated, with sign surfaces free of distortion and other defects in appearance. 2. Before installation, verify that sign surfaces are clean and free of materials or debris that would impair installation. 3. Corrosion Protection: Coat concealed surfaces of exterior aluminum in contact with grout, concrete, masonry, wood, or dissimilar metals, with a heavy coat of bituminous paint. 20 B. Mounting Methods: 1. Concealed Studs: Using a template, drill holes in substrate aligning with studs on back of sign. Remove loose debris from hole and substrate surface. a. Masonry Substrates: Fill holes with adhesive. Leave recess space in hole for displaced adhesive. Place sign in position and push until flush to surface, embedding studs in holes. Temporarily support sign in position until adhesive fully sets. 2. Projecting Studs: Using a template, drill holes in substrate aligning with studs on back of sign.
