1 RFF Brochure-Final 10/23/08 9:58 AM Page 1 Authorized PPG Machine Applicator Since 1997 key tips you should know Western Red Cedar Siding & Trim 1To achieve the best results in a solid color finish, use a high quality alkyd oil-based primer followed by a 100% acrylic top coat. 2 If a natural cedar look is desired, a clear water-repellent preservative can be machine applied over bare cedar. 3 During installation and/or repair, all cut ends and edges must be coated or sealed to prevent water intrusion back into the wood fiber. Evaporating water will release the natural tannins in cedar which can result in brown stains on the paint surface. 4 The WRCLA recommends less Steel or Hot Dipped Galvanized fasteners. Fasteners should not be driven below the surface of the cedar! The heads of the fasteners can be painted to match. See for detailed installation instructions. 5Transparent, non-flexible, film-forming finishes such as lacquer, shellac, urethane and varnish are not recommended for exterior use on cedar. 6 Job site storage of Cedar products is very important! Keep prefinished or primed cedar products in a dry and well-ventilated location. If inside a garage, place a tarp on the cement floor and stack the product a minimum of 6" off the floor (fresh cement holds a lot of moisture). If outside storage is the only option, the product must be a minimum of 6" off the ground with a tarp underneath as well as protecting the top and sides of the unit. 7 At the job site the siding is typically delivered to one location. When sorting by length and/or moving to the place of installation, you must make sure that the protective slip sheeting remains in place! Any product not installed by the end of the day should be protected as per tip #6. 8 Inspect your new finished siding prior to installation! If you notice anything wrong with the color or the finish, do not install the product! Contact your dealer immediately! Fiber Cement Siding 1 CertainTeed fiber cement siding comes directly from the manufacturer pre-primed.through RFF you have two coating options: PPG acrylic Machinecoat or PPG Duracolor FC. The Duracolor FC coating is a more durable, mar-resistant coating especially formulated for cement siding. Ask for it by name: PPG Duracolor FC. 2 During installation and/or repair, all cut ends and edges must be coated or sealed to prevent water intrusion back into the cement siding. Evaporating moisture will release natural ingredients in cement siding which can result in a chalky residue on the paint surface. 3 Job site storage of cement siding is very important! Keep cement siding (primed or pre-finished) in a dry well-ventilated location. If inside a garage, place a tarp on the cement floor and stack the product a minimum of 6" off the floor (cement holds a lot of moisture). If being stored outside, product must be a minimum of 6" off the ground with a tarp underneath as well as protecting the sides and top of the unit. 4 At the job site the siding is typically delivered to one location. When moving fiber cement siding to the place of installation, you must make sure that the protective slip sheeting remains in place! If it becomes neccessary to re-insert the slip sheet, we suggest you interweave the pieces with the slip sheeting - keeping the finished faces apart.the weight of cement siding when face to face can cause paint to transfer from one piece to the next. 5 Inspect your new finished siding prior to installation! If you notice anything wrong with the color or finish, do not install the product! Contact your dealer immediately! Miscellaneous Tips 1 When inquiring about factory coatings on pine boards or pine patterns, ask the dealer to review the final application details with our staff at RFF. There are different species of pine and each has its own unique characteristics which may require different painting recommendations. 2 See your local building material dealer to inquire about the best siding and finish for your project. When ordering factory finished material, double check your square footage calculations and order a little extra.the lead time on factory finishing is typically two weeks. 3 For specific coating warranty information, please refer to the inside of this brochure.

2 RFF Brochure-Final 10/23/08 9:59 AM Page 3 welcome to russin factory finishing we take the pain out of painting. Providing Quality Machine Coated Products Since 1997 Established in 1997, Russin Factory Finishing (RFF) is a state-of-the-art machine applied coatings facility located less than a mile from Russin Lumber Corp. headquarters in Montgomery, NY. RFF is an authorized PPG machine coating applicator: we machine apply a wide variety of PPG coatings to many different substrates offering you more choices. From truckloads to custom job lots, no project is too small or large. PPG Leading The Way Our coating partner is PPG, the undisputed leader in machine applied coatings and one of the world s largest coating manufacturers. PPG pioneered the development of machine applied coatings nearly 70 years ago and is the most trusted name in the industry. PPG has expanded its leadership position through continuous technical innovation. Coatings Applied to Exacting Quality Standards Under Ideal Conditions First, the substrate is acclimated to the environment until reaching optimal levels of temperature and humidity. Next, high-speed rollers and brushes force coatings on to the surfaces and edges of the substrate, including into crevices. RFF applies a consistent amount of coating to every area of each piece to ensure even, complete coverage. Proper Drying and Inspection Mean You Use Every Piece Boards are then placed on large drying racks where all ends and edges are visually inspected and touched up by hand to ensure quality control.the racks allow for proper air circulation and the coating completely dries at the proper temperature and humidity before final packaging. A Better Quality, Longer - Lasting Finish Why? Because machine coated products are protected first.when siding, trim, and decking are installed unfinished, the exposed face can be damaged from ultraviolet rays, wind and rain leading to potential adhesion problems later when field coatings are applied.without primer on the ends, edges and back side of siding and trim, moisture is allowed to enter and will eventually affect the final coating and overall performance. Moisture is the worst enemy of siding and trim products! Machine applied coatings represent the best way to eliminate problems and enhance performance.the substrate is never exposed to damaging weather conditions. Coatings are applied to exacting quality standards with moisture content at an ideal level for finishing. Proper adhesion is achieved and appropriate drying time takes place.these ideal conditions are rarely duplicated when field finishing. Factory finishing results in a beautiful finish with no lap marks, shrink lines, sags, or streaking as well as extended coating life. Factory Finishing Costs Less One of the advantages to installing factory finished products includes lower in-place coating costs when compared with the costs and potential problems associated with field finishing. In fact, factory finishing can cost significantly less than coatings applied in the field. No Delays. Less Mess. No Worries. You won t worry about weather-related delays or if the painter shows up on time. There is no overspray, tarps, rollers, brushes and less mess to deal with. Painter call backs become a thing of the past. RFF machine coated products offer coating warranty protection that we stand behind. Instant Curb Appeal. Superior Performance. Whether you are remodeling or building new, projects look great the minute installation is complete.the state-of-the-art equipment and experience of RFF combined with the superior technology of PPG s coatings are an unbeatable combination for the ultimate in quality, durability, and performance. 3 RFF Brochure-Final 10/23/08 9:59 AM Page 5 BEVEL SIDING for western red cedar Unlike the imitators, prefinished Western Red Cedar bevel siding is the real thing. Nothing compares to its warmth, natural beauty and durability, resistance to rot and decay, and ability to easily accept a wide variety of finishes with excellent results. When a solid color primed and painted finish is desired, Clear Vertical Grain (CVG) grades perform best due to their exceptional dimensional stability allowing for outstanding paint adhesion. Natural sealers and penetrating stains will perform best on the saw textured face. RECOMMENDED MACHINE APPLIED COATINGS SEALERS Create beautiful exteriors with prefinished Western Red Cedar paneling and trim boards. Western Red Cedar accepts and retains many different finishes because of its outstanding dimensional stability, fine texture, a pattern of growth that results in narrow bands of summerwood, and the fact that pitch and resin are absent.
