12 : CASE STUDIES At Schoolscapes our background in Landscape Design helps us understand and fully utilise your play environment features. Here are a few example of how we have successfully worked with schools across the UK to transform their outdoor spaces. Enhancing a Woodland Area The Brief: To create a sensory and imaginative area around the trees at Virginia Primary School, that can be used in all weathers and utilises the existing space to its maximum. 71 The design incorporates platforms at different height to create stages, seating areas and multi-level play, built around the trees. There are musical instruments positioned around the decks to encourage exploration of sound and co-operation among friends. The storytelling area provides a quiet space for small groups to read together or for outdoor teaching. And the Jungle Play Den is perfect for active and imaginative play with climbing opportunities and a den. Making Use of a Steep Bank The Brief: To create an exciting play area to make the most of the sloped grass area to one side of the school building. The design incorporates imaginative and active play, within a sensory and natural setting. The log rounds form terraced pods surrounding the play areas and provide informal seating. Each of the three pods has a different colour Resin Bound Rubber Bark surface and contains a different play item. The Beacon Tower stands tall in the top pod forming a playful focal point with several climbing opportunities including a fast slide and a look out tower. To one side the Play Hut provides a place for social interaction between small groups of children, while encouraging imaginative play. The bottom two pods contain sand and water play with the large Covered Sandpit and Niagara Water Tray giving children the chance to explore different materials while stimulating the senses. Increasing Outdoor Learning Capacity The Brief: To create a series of Timber Shelters in the outdoor space at Hawkchurch Primary School to provide space for children to play and learn outside in all weather. One Shelter was designed to be used as an outdoor classroom to seat whole classes at one time and included a Giant Chalkboard and Dry Wipe Board for teaching aids. The other Shelter was designed to extend an existing classroom by using a Polycarbonate Shelter and fencing to create a secure outdoor space for the younger children at the school
