8 Cold Store Panels Thermal Performance Quad Core structure - microscope view Kingspan insulated sandwich panels with rigid QuadCore and IPN foam core show proven, excellent and almost constant thermal insulation properties throughout their life cycle. The reason they are so effective is that high performance insulation is an integral part of the panel system, so excellent U-values are guaranteed. Correctly installed, Kingspan insulated panels guarantee complete gas and vapor tight seal, thus qualifying the system to be used in controlled atmosphere environments. Integral QuadCore core of tightly packed cells eliminates the appearance of air gaps within the insulation. The tongue and groove joint interfit to achieve excellent thermal performance. There are no air gaps (and thermal bridges) along the joint. Reduced thermal loss (gain) results in considerable energy and cost savings. Thermal and structural properties, as well as the wide range of available panel thicknesses, uniquely qualify Kingspan panels for use in all types of applications chilled store, deep freeze, food processing which require a controlled temperature environment ( box in box assembly).

Thermal Performance Cold Store Panels 9 Temperature gradient within the panel structure. In buildings with external roof and wall envelope, the exterior face of the panels is exposed to direct sunlight, especially during the summer season. Therefore the temperature of the panel surface may rise up to 55ºC - 80ºC depending on the exterior color of the panel. This causes a large heat gradient between the exterior and interior surface of the panel, which must be taken into account in the thermal design of the building. Such a large heat gradient also implies significant stress within the panel, which must be accounted for when designing the load-bearing structure of the building. It is recommended that designers consult Kingspan Technical Services when designing such buildings. Cold store panels thermal performance - IPN core*. (See IACSC Code of Practice for the Design of Coldstore Envelopes). * Please Contact Kingspan for QuadCore insulation core temperature gradient. Air pressure considerations. The process of cooling or thawing of large quantities of food stored in airtight spaces causes considerable alterations in air pressure due to the contraction/expansion of theinterior atmosphere. Rapid pressure changes may result in damages of the insulated box system, and in extreme cases (eg. self contained boxes) in collapse of the structure. Therefore, especially in case of panel envelopes operating in negative temperatures, compensatory pressure valves need to be installed into walls or ceilings. The dimensions and the number of the valves shall be determined by a specialist..

10 Cold Store Panels Fire Performance Insulated panels fire resistance classification. Fire resistance of non-loadbearing exterior walls is tested in accordance with European Norm EN The purpose of the test is to assess the material s performance as a barrier to fire penetration through the sampled building material. R Fire resistance characteristics Loadbearing capacity Fire resistance criteria. Fire classification of a product is a result of fire resistance tests carried out in accordance with pertaining tests standards (EN). Classification of the fire resistance is defined in EN Fire classification of construction products and building elements Part 2: Classification using data from fire resistance tests, excluding ventilation services, and is expressed in specific characteristics: A product must achieve required fire resistance characteristics in order to be classified as applicable for specific types of building construction. Non-loadbearing walls internal and external are classified according to E or E + I criteria (integrity and insulation); additionally this classification may include W and M (mechanical resistance) criteria. Ceilings are classified according to E criteria. Roofs are classified according to the R + E + I criteria (loadbearing capacity, integrity and insulation). For roof panel installations criteria R + E are sufficient. E I W Integrity Insulation Radiation

Fire Performance Cold Store Panels 11 Insulated Panels - Reaction to Fire. The reaction to fire classification is outlined in the European Norm EN Fire classification of construction products and building elements Part 1: Classification using test data from reaction to fire tests. Six primary classes are defined, where class A1 denotes the highest level of performance associated primarily with inorganic materials, whereas class F indicates a material with essentially no resistance to ignition from a small flame. Supplementary classification is defined for smoke emission and flaming droplets performance. Based on these criteria Kingspan insulated panels achieve B-s1, d0 rating. Insurers assessment. Kingspan insulated panels have been declared fire safe by property insurers. Kingspan panel systems have been tested and approved to European and country specific standards and comply with all building regulations. Furthermore, they comply with the property insurance risk requirements of LPCB (Loss Prevention Council Board in the UK) and the FM Global insurance company as follows: To comply with specific fire test standards, no flash over or fire propagation occurs. No flame spread occurs within the panel core. Kingspan Firesafe roof and wall systems are secured to the main/secondary frame members of the structure to protect fire fighters. 92 92 ColdZone Handling Instructions Handling Instructions During loading and unloading by forklift, panels should not be damaged by fork impacts and also there should be enough span between fork supports in order to avoid unacceptable deflection of panels. The pallets should be unloaded on site by a suitable crane, using strapping, not cables. A load distribution apparatus ( as shown ) should be used for long panels and care should be taken for lifters not to crash the sides of panels. Touching edges need to be protected. The panels must be carried edge-wise to avoid bending and the female part of the male-female joint should not be used as a hand-grip.

Handling Instructions ColdZone 93 Panels should be cut to size by using a suitable compass saw or circular hand saw.the sawing blade should cut the metarial cold, so that the panel surface is not damaged. The protective film put on the panels at the factory should be removed immediately after installation and certainly not later than two weeks. Warning: Long term storage of the panels with protective film may damage the coating. Panels should be kept sloppy if there is no closed storage so that the rainwater should not accumulate. Stacked storage for long periods ( more than 4 weeks ) must be avoided. Warning: It is customer s responsibility to protect the panels against fire risks both during storage at site and installation stage.

94 ColdZone Handling Instructions The bottom support span should not be wider than 150 cm when packs are to be stacked on top of each other. A maximum of two packs are recommended in a pile. The panel s surface should be kept clear of dust and direct sunlight. They should be stored on flat, clean and hard surface and preferably in covered places, at job site. Condensation should be avoided with sufficent aeration, leaving the cover open a little at the top but ensuring that the wind cannot blow it off. Water must not be allowed to condense or enter between the panels, since it can cause corrosion. The calculation regarding the loading capacity of cold store panels are made by taking its own weight and temporary service load during the assembly, into consideration. Air conditioning equipment or such devices should not be installed in Wall and Roof Panels. In addittion, personnel shouldn t be allowed to walk on panels and materials shouldn t be moved by using panels. Warning: Do not forget to use Pressure Compensation Valve in your cold stores.
