1 DESIGN SUARY: 1) The owners will live in this home located in the forest east of ount Elden full time. 2) The home's primary heating and cooling will be accomplished using passive solar principles; sunshine through the south windows will generate heat in the 1st level slab floor and internal block walls during the winter, and overhangs will minimize sun in the interior during the summer. Natural and mechanical ventilation will remove interior heat as necessary. A passive heating flow will be generated by the south "solar chimney" which will allow warm air to flow up and through the bedrooms and fall back down into the family/dining room area. 3) The family/dining room block walls will have 8" x 8" holes scattered throughout the top half of the wall to diffuse the bright daylight entering the family room. Glass blocks will be installed in the 8" x 8" holes in the entry area block wall to create an air-tight room. 4) Windows on all sides of the home coupled with open areas above the family room and bright room will provide daylighting, ventilation and views. Benches along the 1st level bay window will provide a warm reading place with a chimney warming/cooling affect for the upstairs bedrooms. Benches and coat racks in the air-locked entry and laundry/mud rooms will provide places to remove muddy boots and hang up coats in the winter. 5) The dining room will be bright and warm on winter mornings for breakfast and cool and comfortable for summer dinners. 6) The 1st level 3/4 bathroom will incorporate ADA requirements. 7) A rainwater catchment and storage system will be plumbed in the future to be used for irrigation. A gray water system may be installed during construction for tree and shrub irrigation. 8) A 2nd level deck will provide a nice outdoor area with views to all directions. An east entry porch will provide protection on rainy/snowy days.
