T-Barrier System Timber Frame Applications Satisfying Fire, Thermal and Acoustic Requirements at the Combined Party Wall and Pitched Roof Junction

The Problem: Thermal Bypass Without effective edge sealing, the party wall cavity allows heat to escape. The image (right) highlights the areas of heat loss in a row of terraced houses. Of particular note is the heat loss at the top of the junction where the party wall cavity meets the external cavity. The Solution The ARC T-Barrier System dramatically reduces heat loss along the edges of the party wall, enabling a zero U-value to be achieved (see below table). Party Wall Construction Solid 0.0 Unfilled cavity with no effective edge sealing 0.5 Unfilled cavity with ARC T-Barrier System around all exposed edges and inline with insulation layers in abutting elements A fully filled cavity with ARC T-Barrier System at all exposed edges and inline with insulation layers in abutting elements U-value (W W/m 2 K) Key Benefits of ARC T-Barrier System Zero U-value at party wall can be achieved Up to three times more effective as an edge seal than conventional systems Simplified installation when compared to conventional systems Reduces sound transmission between the dwellings and within the cavity Minimises thermal bypass Available to suit both masonry and timber frame applications Edge Seal Effectiveness The effectiveness of ARC T-Barrier as an edge seal has been independently tested by Leeds Beckett University. The test replicated real life conditions by measuring the differentials between pressurised and non-pressurised cavities. This ground-breaking test is the only effective test available currently to measure a products effectiveness as an edge seal. ARC T-Barrier was found to provide three times the pressure differential compared to a conventional cavity barrier system, and nearly twice the pressure differential of the Airtightness Membrane employed by some house builders Satisfies NHBC Chapter 7.2 D13 Junctions between roofs and compartment or separating walls shall adequately resist fire spread. 0 Party Wall DPC Airtightness Membrane ARC T-Barrier Results presented were obtained using a 100mm party wall cavity with a 100mm external cavity. 2

The ARC T-Barrier System has been developed to create an effective edge seal around the party wall cavity and to provide a complete fire barrier between two dwellings, both in the vertical cavity and the cavity between the pitched roofs. By creating an effective edge seal around the party wall cavity, the ARC T-Barrier System helps to achieve a zero U-value at the party wall. The system also provides a simple solution for complying with NHBC Chapter 7.2 D13 Junctions between roofs and compartment or separating walls shall adequately resist fire spread. Introducing the Traffic Light System The ARC T-Barrier System is fitted as the build progresses, from ground level right up to the top of the roof pitch. ARC s unique Traffic Light System enables the correct product for the current stage of the build to be identified at-a-glance.

ARC T-Barrier Vertical Timber Frame Installed vertically at the party wall junction The ARC T-Barrier is designed to provide a fire, thermal and acoustic break at the junction between the external cavity and the party wall cavity. This minimises the effect of thermal bypass as well as reducing flanking noise in the cavity. The ARC T-Barrier provides up to 1 hour fire integrity in timber frame construction, and meets the Robust Detail s requirement for a barrier where a separating party wall meets an external cavity wall, significantly reducing sound transmission along the cavity. Key Facts Material Rockfibre mineral wool Thermal Conductivity 0.037W/mK Sleeve Material Polythene DPC Fitted No Standard Length 1.2m Fire Rating (Timber) Up to 1 hour The ARC T-Barrier Vertical Timber Frame is designed to be fitted vertically as the timber kit is erected, with a friction fit in both the external and party wall cavities. Care should be taken to ensure butt joints are compressed together as much as possible to ensure a tight fit without any gaps. Fit: As timber kit is erected ARC T-Barrier Pitched Roof Installed up the roof pitch above the party wall blockwork The ARC T-Barrier Pitched Roof is designed to provide a fire, thermal and acoustic barrier between the top of the party wall and the underslaters felt. The product is fitted along the length of the roof pitch, from soffit to apex ensuring an effective and consistent barrier. The ARC T-Barrier Pitched Roof is easily installed once the party wall structure is complete, with the unique T-shape being held in place by compression between the two leaves of the party wall. Key Facts Material Rockfibre mineral wool Thermal Conductivity 0.037W/mK Sleeve Material Polythene DPC Fitted No Standard Length 1.2m NHBC Chapter 7.2 S13 states that a separating wall should stop 25mm below the top of the adjacent roof trusses. ARC T-Barrier Pitched Roof is designed to compress within this gap, satisfying the NHBC recommendation for a mineral wool fire barrier. Fit: After party wall structure is complete, before roof membrane 4

ARC Tile Batten Barrier Installed above the roof membrane between the tile battens The ARC Tile Batten Barrier is designed to provide a fire, thermal and acoustic break at the party wall between the roof tiles and roof membrane, working in conjunction with ARC T-Barrier Pitched Roof to create a complete fire break at the separating wall. The ARC Tile Batten Barrier is supplied in 1.2m lengths allowing easy on-site handling and making for quick installation. The tile battens are nailed on top of the barrier, compressing it where the two cross. A knife is used to score the ARC Tile Batten Barrier, releasing the Key Facts compression and Material Rockfibre mineral wool allowing the barrier to recover to the full depth of the tile batten. Thermal Conductivity 0.037W/mK Material Thickness Material Width 30mm 300mm Standard Length 1.2m Fit: As tile battens are fitted ARC Soffit Slab Installed within the soffit and within any void above the external brickwork The ARC Soffit Barrier is designed to fill the void within the soffit, providing a fire, thermal and acoustic barrier between dwellings. The barrier is manufactured from rockfibre mineral wool, with a foil facing to ensure an effective smoke barrier is created. An exact fit can be created to form an effective barrier at this junction. 6 Technical Specifications The following technical specifications are common between all four barriers within the ARC T-Barrier System. Fire Properties The ARC T-Barrier System is manufactured using rockfibre mineral wool which achieves a fire classification of Euroclass A1 as defined in BS EN Thermal Properties ARC s rockfibre mineral wool insulation has a thermal conductivity of 0.037W/mK. Standards The rockfibre mineral wool used in the manufacture of ARC T-Barrier System conforms to BS EN and EN16001 Energy Management Systems. The DPC is manufactured in accordance with BS Storage and Packaging ARC Fire Barriers are supplied in polythene packs which are designed for transporting and protecting the products. It is not recommended that the packs are stored in direct sunlight as the polythene which encapsulates the barriers can be damaged. When storing the barriers for longer periods of time it is recommended the product should be stored indoors, or under cover. Environment ARC s rockfibre mineral wool has no CFCs or HCFCs involved in the manufacturing process and represents no known threat to the environment, and is classed as zero ODP and zero GWP. ARC T-Barrier System has a Green Guide rating of A+. Health and Safety ARC Building Solutions has an approved Health and Safety Policy and is committed to working and supplying products safely. ARC s rockfibre mineral wool is not classed as a possible human carcinogen. We have assessed products as required by Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations (COSHH). An ARC COSHH data sheet is available and can be downloaded from ARC s website. 6
